I am having to erase that defeat for Sabine Lisicki to Angelique Kerber at Birmingham from my mind, but find it easier to do so at Wimbledon, where Lisicki is so comfortable and she is the best grass court player of her generation IMO not to win here and could/should have two All England Club titles to her name. Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves
The current favorite to win the National League Cy Young Award is showcased on MLB Network Thursday night when Max Scherzer and his Washington Nationals (43-34, 21-20 away) visit rookie southpaw Manny Banuelos and the Atlanta Braves (36-41, 19-16 home) at 7:10 ET.
The Nationals were the preseason favorites to win the World Series and they are finally starting to play like it following an erratic start, winning nine of their last 10 games to open up a bit of a lead of 3½ games over the second place New York Mets in the National League East heading into Wednesday. The Braves were supposed to be in a rebuilding year so they have over-achieved a bit to be a reasonable seven games behind the Nationals entering the middle game of this three-game series Wednesday, but they could now be in the midst of a regression as their 6-1 loss in the series opener here at Turner Field on Tuesday marked their sixth loss in seven games.
Scherzer won the American League Cy Young Award two years ago for the Detroit Tigers and then followed that up by going 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA in his final year in Detroit last year. He figured to dominate now crossing over to the National League and he has done just that for the Nationals despite his extremely deceptive 9-5 record as he has a ridiculous 1.79 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and a phenomenal ratio of 130 strikeouts vs. 14 walks in 110.1 innings! Scherzer simultaneously ranks sixth in the Major Leagues in strikeouts rate at 10.60 per nine innings and third in walk rate at 1.14 per nine, and he has done that while allowing only seven home runs in 15 starts, all leading to a 4.2 WAR that leads the majors. Scherzer began one of the best two-start stretches in the history of baseball three starts ago when he tossed a Complete Game one-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts vs. one walk vs. the Milwaukee Brewers, and then following that up with a no-hitter vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates in which he struck out 10 and missed a Perfect Game because of hitting a batter with two outs in the ninth inning! He then pitched a more "normal" game last time out at Philadelphia, which in Scherzer's case meant allowing two runs on five hits in eight innings with seven strikeouts and not a single walk.
Now, Scherzer figured to be a prohibitive favorite here regardless of the mound opponent and the fact that he is facing a pitcher in Banuelos here that is making his Major League debut only amplifies that point, with the Mighty Max being more than a -200 road favorite across the board as of Wednesday afternoon. However, while those odds may be hard to stomach the 'under' could be another viable option for this game. It should be obvious that the Braves will have a hard time scoring, but the youngster Banuelos can also keep the Nats in check in his first start. Banuelos was a top 15 prospect according to Baseball America while in the New York Yankees organization in 2012, but his ascent through the minors was derailed by Tommy John surgery. He is back and healthy this season though as he has a 2.29 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 69 strikeouts in 82.2 innings over 15 starts in Triple-A, prompting this recall.

These 3rd and 4th place playoff games almost always produce goals, it is easy to see why, there is usually one side a little more motivated than the other and both can easily let intensity slip for what seems largely a meaningless fixture at the end of a long competition, coming after a gruelling domestic campaign for many. Peru will be without suspended Carlos Zambrano from the backline and did have to play 60 minutes down to ten men after his sending off against the hosts, but that is counter balanced by having an extra day's rest and recovery time. Peru have impressed me more, I think they have a little more about them, look stronger defensively and at the ned of the day, Paraguay have only beaten Jamaica inside 90 minutes at the Copa and no team other team in nine starts and I have to suggest .......

Naturally most pitchers would be happy with those key numbers, but remember that Kershaw has a career 2.53 ERA. Still, there is no need to panic as his WHIP is still in line with his 1.06 career figure and he still has a dominant command ratio averaging an impressive 11.78 strikeouts vs. 2.10 walks per nine innings, with that strikeout rate ranking second in the Major Leagues behind only Chris Sale, and he has a 2.59 FIP, 2.09 xFIP and 2.9 WAR.
In other words, there is nothing to worry about as he will be just fine, and keep in mind that Clayton is still 4-2 with a 2.31 ERA and 0.90 WHIP here at Dodger Stadium, where he has a phenomenal 70 strikeouts vs. nine walks in 46.2 innings! As you would expect he has dominated the Mets over the years going 5-0 in seven starts with a 1.62 ERA and 43 strikeouts vs. 19 walks while holding New York to a .214 batting average.

The top two teams in the American League Central clash on FOX Saturday Baseball when Mike Pelfrey and the second place Minnesota Twins (42-37, 17-22 away) visit fellow right-hander Joe Blanton and the first place Kansas City Royals (44-32, 22-14 home) at 7:15 ET.
The Royals are the defending American League Champions but they made that World Series run as a wild card last year and they are still seeking their first division title since 1985. The Twins finished dead last in the division last season at 70-92 and not much was expected from them this year, but they have been a major surprise and they trimmed their deficit behind the Royals to just 3½ games after taking the series opener here at Kauffman Stadium 2-0 on Thursday.
Yes. this is the same Joe Blanton that has been often criticized for being overweight and ineffective throughout his career and the now 34-year-old did not pitch in the Major Leagues last year after finishing an unsightly 2-14 with a 6.04 ERA for the Los Angeles Angels in 2013. However, Blanton has trimmed down to the point of being almost unrecognizable and he has been a new pitcher as well, going 2-1 with a nice 3.14 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 10 appearances including three starts. Granted his last start did not go well as he was charged with five runs in 2.2 innings vs. the Houston Astros on Monday, but he had allowed a total of two runs and seven hits in 11 innings over his first two starts with 11 strikeouts and not a single walk, and he has a chance to return to that form here. Blanton has 26 strikeouts vs. seven walks for the season and he is facing a Minnesota lineup that is batting a measly .218 while averaging just 3.39 runs per game vs. right-handed pitchers on the road for the season. Blanton does not figure to pitch deeply into this game, but that is just fine when he has the support of the best bullpen in baseball with Kansas City leading the Major Leagues with a 2.07 pen ERA.
Pelfrey also comes off of a tough outing allowing eight earned runs on nine hits in just two innings vs. the Cincinnati Reds Monday, leaving him at 5-5 with a 3.81 ERA for the season. He does have a rather high 1.44 WHIP and his peripherals are not particularly strong as he has a weak command ratio with only 42 strikeouts vs. 29 walks in 87.1 innings and his ERA should probably be higher as he has a 4.50 xFIP. Granted he tossed seven scoreless innings at the Royals back in April, but to give you an idea of how much Kansas City had owned Pelfrey before that, he still now has a 6.05 ERA and 1.71 WHIP while going 1-2 in four career starts against the Royals. And that April start notwithstanding, this is a better Royals' offense than recent years, especially vs. right-handed pitchers here at home as they are at a hearty .272 while averaging a bountiful 4.81 runs in this circumstance. And unlike Blanton, Pelfrey does not have a reliable bullpen to fall back on with that Minnesota contingent owning a 3.90 ERA overall that has gone up to 4.30 in the last 10 games.
The Royals are 35-17 in the last 52 head-to-head meetings overall. The Royals are also 45-21 in their last 66 games vs. right-handed starters and 9-2 in their last 11 games as favorites, while the Twins are 4-11 in their last 15 road games vs. teams with winning records.

We have a repeat of the 2011 final and the extremely well conditioned and prepared Japanese team have proved that win was no fluke and that they are perhaps the best team in the world and few will doubt that if they win this evening. In that previous final they twice came from behind to tie the US, including once in extra time and showed incredible mental strength to do so, I do not think that any other team in world football , would have been able to do so under similar circumstances. My preview of their quarter final win over Australia is reproduced below, that includes my pre tournament notes about how well prepared the Japanese were and how seriously they have taken their role as world champions and they have loved the four years since and I feel that once again they have been seriously underestimated by the oddsmakers and that there is no huge gulf between the two. Of course, this is not a coinflip as the US will have massive support in Vancouver, but Japan have already played here three times and will feel very much at home in stadium and city.They were disappointing against England in the semis, but I think that was the match in which all the pressure was on them, now it is very much on the US, they are going to have to make the running and they will be very vulnerable to the speed and technical ability of the Japanese. I think we might well see extra time again and I am happy to take .....

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs
Historic Wrigley Field in Chicago is the venue Monday night on ESPN when right-hander John Lackey and the team with the best record in baseball the St. Louis Cardinals (52-28, 22-17 away) visit southpaw Jon Lester and those Chicago Cubs (43-36, 21-16 home) at 8:05 ET.
The Cardinals snapped an uncharacteristic four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres Saturday, and they entered Sunday six games ahead of the second place Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Central. The long suffering Cubs were expected to be improved this year and indeed they have been, entering Sunday in third place 8½ games behind the Cardinals but just as importantly holding the second and last wild card position by 2½ games over the World Champion San Francisco Giants, meaning that the top three teams in the Central Division would all be in the playoffs if the season ended today. Chicago split the first two games with the Miami Marlins this weekend entering the rubber game on Sunday.
Lester was the most sought after starting pitcher in free agency this past winter, but the Cubs no doubt expected more from him than being 4-6 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.33 WHIP just one week away from the All-Star break. However, he has looked more like his usual self while allowing one run or less in three of his last four starts including throwing seven scoreless innings at the Mets last time out allowing just five hits. Lester also allowed only one earned run in seven innings the last time he faced the Cardinals this season, meaning he has now allowed three earned runs or less in all three of this career regular season starts vs. St. Louis. In reality though, he is five-for-five in such starts lifetime against the Cardinals because he also allowed a grand total of one run and nine hits in 14.2 innings over two starts in the 2013 World Series against them while he was with the Red Sox. The southpaw now gets to face a St. Louis lineup batting just .231 and averaging 3.29 runs overall vs. left-handed pitchers this year, compared to .264 and 4.25 runs vs. right-handers.
The veteran Lackey is 6-5 but with a fine 3.30 ERA and 1.24 WHIP for the Cardinals. However, that ERA is better than you would expect for a pitcher that has a 4.03 xFIP that is actually the worst among the regular Cardinal starters, and Lackey has severe home vs. away splits as he is 1-3 with a bloated 5.40 ERA and 1.38 WHIP away from Busch Stadium. Yes he has pitched well in both of his starts vs. the Cubs this season allowing three runs in 14.2 innings, but both of those outing came back home. He now must contend with Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs, who is expected to be back in the lineup Monday after missing Sunday's game. Rizzo hit 32 home runs last season but he is an even better hitter this year batting .292 while dramatically reducing his strikeouts, and he still has 15 homers nearing the midway point of the season. Also, while the Cardinals still lead the National League with a 2.18 bullpen ERA, it has been more of a struggle for that unit lately with a 4.41 ERA in the last five games.
The Cubs are 6-0 in Lester's last six starts vs. the National League Central and 4-1 in their last five games overall pending the result from Sunday. The Cardinals are 2-9 in Lackey's last 11 road starts and 0-6 in their last six games vs. left-handed starters overall.

Madison Keys has the game to win Wimbledon, she has not overly impressed so far and had some health issues coming into the event, but every match will help her and she has a very solid team Lyndsey Davenport behind her giving good solid advice and I feel she is too big today.
I have a LOT of time for Agnieszka Radwanska , she is very competent on grass and we won good money on her in 2012-13 when she made a run to the final taking Serena very close and then the semis the following year. However, despite recent signs that she is on the way back, her form has dipped over the last two years and she is not quite the defensive brick wall she was, but a very tough, steely and clever opponent. The pair met here in 2013, Agie was close to her peak, Keys just 18 yo and it went to a decider, 15 aces for the youngster that day, but she lost the match on second serve, she is twice the player now and her opponent a little less fearsome and this looks a good opportunity for an "upset".
I have no problem with Radwanska as favourite , but circa 55% at best IMO, so getting around 33%-36% on Keys is too good to resist.

Novak had to come back from two sets down to beat Kevin Anderson in the Round of 16 , but the match was spread over two days and I doubt it would have taken too much out of him. He faces another big server today in Marin Cilic and one who took him to five sets here last year at the same quarter final stage. That was their only ever meeting on grass and you would think that would give Cilic great confidence, but upon closer inspection, I am not quite so sure how much hope that the Croatian will take from that, or any of their previous meetings.
Djokovic leads the h2h 12-0 and apart from that match up last year ,Cilic has only won three sets, two of which were tie breaks and the last 20 sets that the Serbian world number one has won in this series have seen an incredible 18 won by three or more games and 12 by four or more (including 6 of the last 7), given how strong the Cilic serve is, those are stunning stats. In that "close" match in 2014, Novak actually won the handicap by +9 games and the likelihood today is that any sets Cilic wins will be breakers and those that Djokovic wins will be by 3+ games, it gives a lot of leeway with the handicap game line of -7, which was the margin by which he actually beat Anderson.
Nole has reached at least the semi finals of 19 of the last 20 grand slams and is looking to do so for the sixth year running at Wimbledon, Cilic has only twice in 30 attempts made it beyond the last 8 in slams and it is hard to see either record changing today and I take the Serbian to dominate big the sets he does win. In the last fast court meeting between the two, at the end of last year, Cilic won just 5 of 21 points on second serve and only 52% on first and Djokovic clearly has a massive read on his service action, even more so than he does on anyone else !

One of the bitterest rivalries in all of sports gets renewed on MLB Network Friday night when Michael Pineda and the New York Yankees (45-39, 21-23 away) visit fellow right-hander Clay Buchholz and the Boston Red Sox (41-45, 21-21 home) at Fenway Park at 7:10 ET.
Even though the Yankees lead the American League East while the Red Sox are in last place, Boston closed the deficit to just five games entering Thursday in an ultra-tight division, as if this huge series was in need of any more drama. The Red Sox have closed the gap by entering this contest on a four-game winning streak. The Yankees meanwhile split the first two games of a three-game series with the Oakland A's, and the entered the finale of that series Thursday leading Baltimore and Toronto by 2½ games each and Tampa Bay by 3½, setting up what should be a wild second half of the season in the division.
This series opener is a matchup of staff aces. Pineda looked like a Cy Young Award contender to begin the year but he leveled off quite a bit since then and has now seen his ERA rise to 3.79 as he is 8-5 with a 1.21 WHIP. He still has outstanding command numbers though with 105 strikeouts vs. a mere 13 walks in 99.2 innings, which leaves him with a 2.57 FIP and 2.62 xFIP while ranking 10th in the Major League among qualified starting pitchers with a 3.0 WAR. Most importantly Pineda seems to have regained his early-season form over his last two starts, first allowing two earned runs in eight innings with eight strikeouts and not a single walk vs. the Astros and then most recently tossing seven scoreless innings at the Rays and allowing just five hits with 10 strikeouts vs. one walk last Saturday. And Pineda tossed a gem right here in Fenway the last time he faced the Red Sox allowing one run on three hits in 6.1 innings with 10 strikeouts and nary a walk. On top of all this, the Yankees activated closer Andrew Miller from the Disabled List on Wednesday, once again giving New York probably the best set-up / closer combination in the Major Leagues with Dellin Betances now sliding back into the set-up role.
Buchholz has been oft maligned in recent years but he has quieted his skeptics this year despite a mediocre 7-6 record as he has a 3.27 ERA and 1.19 WHIP along with an excellent ratio in his own right with 104 strikeouts vs. 23 walks in 110 innings. That has netted Buchholz a 2.54 FIP and 3.15 xFIP, and he is surprisingly just ahead of Pineda and eighth in the majors with his 3.1 WAR. The caveat for Buchholz though is his past struggles with the Yankees, against whom he is now 5-8 lifetime with a fat 6.38 ERA and 1.65 WHIP while yielding a .301 batting average. Even his command numbers have been way off vs. New York with 55 strikeouts vs. 37 walks in 84.2 career innings. Buchholz was lit up by the Bronx Bombers for his worst start of this season back on April 12th when he surrendered 10 runs (nine earned) on nine hits including two home runs plus two walks while laboring through 79 pitches in only 3.1 innings.
The Yankees are 4-0 in the last four head-to-head meetings in Boston and 7-1 in Pineda's last eight starts when going on five days of rest. The Red Sox are 19-42 in their last 61 home games vs. teams with winning records and 1-6 in Buchholz's last seven starts vs. the Yankees at Fenway Park.

The Beltway Series continues Saturday night on FOX when Jordan Zimmermann and the Washington Nationals (46-38, 21-22 away) make the short trip to visit fellow right-hander Miguel Gonzalez and the Baltimore Orioles (43-42, 28-17 home) at Camden Yards at 7:15 ET.
The Nationals had seen their first place lead in the National League East shrunk to three games over the pesky second place New York Mets entering the series opener here on Friday, as Washington was swept at home in an abbreviated two-game series by the Cincinnati Reds, and with that series finale rained out on Wednesday the Nationals has two days off entering Friday. The Orioles went into that opener in second place in the American League East three games behind the New York Yankees in a division where 5½ games separated New York from the last place Boston Red Sox. This is the first series this year between these interleague rivals, who meet again for three games in Washington in September.
Zimmermann had not resembled the dominant pitcher of recent years over most of the first half of this season but that is now starting to change, which is bad news for the rest of the league. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find a pitcher in better form than Zimmermann over his last three starts, as after tossing 15.2 scoreless innings over back-to-back outings vs. the Atlanta Braves while allowing 12 hits and not walking a batter, he followed up by limiting the San Francisco Giants to one run on a solo home run and three hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings on Sunday. That improves Zimmermann to 7-5 with a 3.04 ERA and 1.23 WHIP for the season, and while those numbers still pale compared to his 2.66 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over all of last year, they are certainly trending in the right direction. He now faces a slumping Baltimore offense averaging just 3.00 runs while batting .213 over the last 10 games and he has the support of a hot Washington bullpen that has posted a 1.63 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over that same 10-game span.
Gonzalez has an identical 7-5 record for the home standing Orioles but with a higher 3.87 ERA, although his WHIP of 1.20 is right in line with Zimmermann's. He also comes off of a nice outing vs. the Chicago White Sox on Sunday where he allowed one earned run and just four hits in six innings, snapping a streak of three straight outings without a Quality Start. However Gonzalez does not have good peripherals as his command numbers are nothing special with 6.83 strikeouts vs. 2.85 walks per nine innings, he is a flyball pitcher with just a 39.7 percent groundball rate and he has benefited from a low .253 BABIP allowed and a high 80.2 percent strand rate. Put that all together and you get a weak 4.92 FIP the is the fourth worst among all qualified Major League starting pitchers with only Kyle Kendrick, R.A. Dickey and Matt Garza being higher, and Gonzalez's xFIP is not much better at 4.25. And should Gonzalez be in need of relief, the Baltimore bullpen is slumping with a collective 4.76 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over the last 10 contests.
The Nationals are still 12-5 in their last 17 games overall even with the two losses to the Reds and 11-5 in their last 16 road games vs. teams with winning records. The Orioles are 1-6 in their last seven games overall and 0-4 in their last four games vs. teams with winning records, all pending the result from Friday.

I was quite keen on Panama coming into this tournament and ahead of their opener with Haiti wrote .............
"This will be the 13th Gold Cup, the US and Mexico have won 11 of the previous 12 between them and contested five finals including three of the last four and that is what the organisers are hoping for again this year, hence the very favourable draw for that to come about. However, Panama did make the final in 2013 , had an earlier runner up place to their name and made the semis in 2011 and quite rightly see themselves as a major contender.Los Canaleros played two matches in build up with Ecuador and appear well prepared for this event, the same cannot be said for the Haitians who have had just a single game ( 2-2 draw with China) in the last eight months and are going to "bond" as they go along, which was kind of their game plan in 2013 when they lost their opener to Honduras 2-0. They do have a little talent in the team, notably Jeff Louis of Standard Liege, who long term readers might recall I was very keen on whilst he was at Nancy, but they look to match up poorly to me against the very athletic and experienced Panama squad. Ten of their players have 50 + caps and they have three very prolific frontmen in Gabriel Torres, Luis Tejada and especially Blas Perez who is going to be very much at home here with the FC Dallas striker playing in his home stadium tonight. He is extremely strong and good in the air and has a bit of a reputation for being physical and if Panama can isolate him against one or two of the smaller defenders and there are several, that could produce big dividends."
Panama did largely dominate that game and then again "blew" a lead against the Hondurans and have led for 90 minutes in total across the two matches. They have not seen out the final 20 minutes that well in either game, but I feel that will be less of a concern this evening, the US have scored all their three goals in the first hour or so and will not be overly pressing late in this game with so little at stake for them and with another three matches to play. Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann rotated heavily, especially at the back between the first two games and will surely do so again this evening. Panama have a decent record against the US in Gold Cup competition, they have lost three of the six meetings , but all by a single goal and they have a win and two draws in the other three and getting odds against and half our money back with a one goal defeat about a team with all the motivation looks the way to go, but not a day I want to get overly involved in, so ............

Golf Open Championship Outright Analysis:
The Open returns to what appears to be a changed St Andrews, Tiger Woods who won here in 2000 and 2005 claims to have "not recognised" the old course when he arrived as it was so green, but I doubt it is going to play too differently and if the high gusty wind arrives as forecast on Friday, it will show a different side to the benign links which newcomers might be fooled into thinking it has become. Late afternoon on Friday looks like being very testing indeed and those out on course after 13.00 could and it has to said that the weather can change very quickly in this part of the world, be at a big disadvantage. That includes Snedeker, Bubba, Westwood, Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Day, Woods and Oosthuizen ( who have won the last three Opens at St Andrews between them) and the wonder boy of golf ,Jordan Spieth.
That is not to say they they cannot win, the wind might not arrive or could even come early (!), but it is forecast to be late in the day, pretty strong and gusty and if it does, these guys will find it tough, last year, you might remember, our selection Adam Scott was "robbed" by the weather and was one of only two who finished in the top 25 from the "wrong" side of the draw, which was on that that occasion ( late Thursday/early Friday).
Big name players, or those with solid Open form who currently look to be on the better side of the draw include Adam Scott, Kaymer, Mickelson, Stenson, Kuchar, Rose, Fowler, Furyk and Casey.
Betting pre tournament as we are, I could only consider those players going out earlyish on Friday and I would also need them to have good solid links form and be in decent shape form wise. Spieth is the best player on the planet right now and by some way, but having arrived only on Monday and never having hit a shot at the course before then and on the wrong side of the draw, he could not enter my calculations at such low odds.
I am going to start with Adam Scott, I was incredibly bullish about his chances last year when I wrote .............
"The course at Hoylake is little changed from the one Tiger Woods played irons off the tee for 71 holes to win in 2006. It took a then course record round from Graeme McDowell to keep him off the top of the leaderboard on day 1, but he was in front for the next three days to record a famous and very emotional win, it being his first major title after the passing of his father. Given recent history it is hard to see a repeat, but with Tiger, you can never say never.
The course will not be as bone dry this week, infact, it is said to be lush, but that could quickly change. However, the rough will surely be more penal and the fairways slower. it will be a real test and a "proper" Open course, which means to win, your all round game will have to be in very good shape with no chinks and only a champion will win this.
At first glance you might feel you will also have to be very good on the Par 5's. Tiger was -14 for those 16 holes without a driver in 2006, but I do not feel that will be as vital ( it will help though) this time round and a key stat that many people have highlighted is Par 4 scoring and the last six Open winners have all been ranked first or second come the end of the weekend .
So, I am looking for a "champion" , one who can play Open links style golf, is well prepared and who is very good at Par 4 scoring. My, not very original choice, is Adam Scott, the world number ranked player. he is certainly a champion, already has a Masters to his name and should have 3-4 more slams, he blew a huge winning chance in the Open in 2012 leading by four with a round to play, but he has since won his major, which relieves the pressure and he followed up that second to Ernie Els two years ago, with a third place last year. He played here in 2006 and finished in tie for 8th, failure to post one really low round (sub 68), which all the top seven golfers did, cost him dear. He has a links win to his name and it came at Gleneagles ( I know it is not by the sea btw) by a whopping ten strokes and he could post something equally sensational if everything clicked.
He is ranked T2nd for P4 scoring on Tour which I think is his highest ever and he is also #1 on the Par 5's, so far so good ! He has played ten US Tour events this year, been top 25 in 9, top 14 in eight and top ten in 6, it is almost inconvievable he will not contend this week and I feel he has given himself the very best possibility to do so.
Very much a big time player now with his game and schedule focused around the majors, he has finished top 10 in 8 of the last 14 slams , that alone suggests he has a 57% chance (odds 1.75) of finishing top 10, without considering any other factors in his favour.
He bypassed the Scottish Open last week and arrived at Royal Liverpool a week ago and played the course ( a full 18 holes at least four times) and I doubt any one will have better knowledge of the layout and how the course is likely to play. That meant all the hard work was done early and he has been able to sit back a bit and really work on fine tuning his game over the last day or two.
In interview yesterday he said :"I'm playing some of my best golf at the moment and I don't know how long that's going to last so I've got to try to take advantage and win all the events that I'd really love to win - and this is certainly one of them."I've given myself a couple of opportunities and haven't done it. I think maybe the third time you have to do it or it might not come back around."I think Lytham was the proving to me that I've got what it takes to win.
