British online gaming company 888 Holdings' full-year earnings nearly doubled, helped by strong growth of its casino and poker offering, and the company named Brian Mattingley as chief executive.

The company, which operates 888 casino, poker, sport and bingo brands, said it planned to invest in several newly regulated markets across Europe and the United States.

More Britons prefer to stay at home, watching TV and gambling online, updates from consumer-facing companies showed, amid fears that the UK will slip back into recession.

888 Poker today confirmed its financial results for 2011 which saw poker revenue leap 58 percent to US$61 million from US$38 million in 2010.

The increase has seen the company rise from 13th to 4th in global liquidity rankings while active customers grew 58 percent to 318,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011 and new player recruitment up 77 percent in the full year.

Full Tilt update: No new news on the sale of Full Tilt Poker to Groupe Bernard Tapie, but there was some news on the Full Tilt front. An independent review was released on the Alderney Gambling Control Commission’s handling of the Full Tilt case. And according to that report, the AGCC acted appropriately.

There are still some “major issues” with a bill in California to legalize Internet gambling, a source close to the legislation told Card Player. The measure was introduced in late February and remains active in the legislature.

If enacted as is, poker would be the only game allowed for two years. After the waiting period is over, the state could phase in other games. Opponents of the bill say online gaming should never be expanded beyond poker, according to the source.

Applications for online poker licenses in Nevada will hit regulatory agendas in May or June, Gaming Control Board Chairman Mark Lipparelli said at Wednesday’s Gaming Policy Committee meeting in Las Vegas.

Last fall, Gov. Brian Sandoval announced the revival of the 11-member panel that hasn’t met in nearly 20 years. It was new faces and new issues this time around.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss Nevada’s plans for overseeing the nation’s first intrastate online poker industry. Along with Sandoval and Lipparelli, other members of the Committee include Gaming Commission Chairman Peter Bernhard and MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren.

Online games company Zynga Inc. said Wednesday that CEO Mark Pincus and other insiders will sell some of their stake at $12 a share, slightly below Wednesday's closing price.

Zynga earlier announced that the insiders planned to sell 43 million shares of stock, but it hadn't disclosed the price. Zynga, which had its initial public offering of stock in December, has said proceeds from the sale will go to the individuals, not the company.

Zynga is the maker of online games such as "CityVille," ''FarmVille and "Zynga Poker." Many of the games are played on Facebook, though Zynga has been working on expanding to other areas, notably mobile devices. "Words With Friends," a Scrabble-like game played mainly on smartphones, is one of its best-known titles.

It was one in a group of social Web companies that went public over the past year. Others include LinkedIn Corp., Groupon Inc. and Yelp Inc. Facebook is expected to have its IPO this spring, possibly in May.

In response to increased gaming competition from Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey, the state of Delaware is considering a plan to allow online bets, the governor’s office told Card Player.

“Our industry is on the severe defensive,” said Brian Selander, Chief Strategy Officer to Gov. Jack Markell.

The Gaming Competitiveness Act of 2012 is still being drafted and will be introduced by the end of next week, Selander said.

In addition to legalizing casino games on the Internet, the measure would allow an online lottery and expand keno and sports betting in the brick-and-mortar setting.

Selander said the bill has a good chance of passing. In order to become law in Delaware, the measure would have to navigate through both the House and Senate before landing on the governor’s desk.

The government's plan to avoid a trial in its prosecution of defendants in a crackdown on Internet poker companies hit a snag Wednesday when a judge refused to immediately accept a guilty plea from a Utah banker, saying he needed to know why the government was walking away from the case.

U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered prosecutors to explain in writing why they let former St. George banker John Campos plead guilty to a misdemeanor bank gambling charge rather than a felony, averting a trial next month. The trial was the only one scheduled to result from charges brought against a dozen individuals in a prosecution that shut down U.S. operations of the three largest Internet poker companies. Half of those charged remain fugitives and the others have pleaded to charges.

Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment Plc (BPTY) co-Chief Executive Officer Norbert Teufelberger said it is a question of “when, not if” the U.S. online poker market opens up and it would present a significant opportunity for the company.

“It is a significant opportunity for the company because in our history, we had 50 percent market share, that market was close to three quarters of a billion dollars,” to the company, Teufelberger said in a conference call today.

A report into the Alderney gambling regulator's handling of the besieged Full Tilt Poker website has found it was "appropriate, timely and fair".

Its author, Peter Dean, said the episode was "an example of regulation working as it should".

He said the Alderney Gambling Control Commission had "conducted the 'fit and proper' tests with appropriate rigour".

The commission revoked the online firm's licence in September after claims of financial fraud.

US authorities accused the company of defrauding online poker players out of $440m (£289m) and giving misleading statements about the extent of its funds.

While the US poker market struggles to resurface and sort out its legal problems, some studies are showing that Canada may be in fact the bigger online poker market. According to a news report, a study conducted by the University of Hamburg and the University of Nevada shows that nearly 2.54 percent of all residents in the Northwest Canadian territories are online poker players. the study also indicated that a total of 0.68 percent of the people in the Nova Scotia region of Canada were online poker players and that 0.83 percent of those residents in Ontario were online poker players.

The day has come when the poker companies who followed the UIGEA and bowed out of the US gambling market can sit back and say that they had made the right and best decision. Although the US has not yet legalized internet poker and sorted out all the regulations and taxation stipulations, it is making headway in some areas such as intrastate poker and a state by state legalization of online poker. As a result, all the poker companies and interested new ones will be entering the US market as soon as the way is paved for it.
