Pirmose rungtynėse, greičiausiai dėl pirmos vietos grupėje Urugvajus minimaliai įveikė serbus, abi žaidė apylygiai, tačiau Urugvajui įmušus įvartį, atidavė iniciatyva varžovams, kurie nepasinaudojo susikurtomis progomis, o jų tikrai turėjo. Meksika pirmose rungtynėse nusileido Maliui, tačiau rungtynes meksikiečiai baigė devyniese, ir šiandien nepadės centro gynėjas O. Bernal bei puolėjas D.
