Competition for 5th place. In the groups, both Japan and Mexico only won 1 match. Japan lost to Italy 4-3 and Ukraine 2-1, but defeated Indonesia 4-1 and Panama 1-0. Mexico lost to Ivory Coast 4-1, tied with France 2-2 and South Korea 0-0, and won against Saudi Arabia 3-2. Japan finished the group with 9 goals scored and 7 goals conceded, while Mexico finished with 6 goals scored and 8 conceded. As neither team achieved their goal of reaching the semi-finals, we can expect even more relaxed play from both teams, especially in defense.
