There seems to be no end in the continuing saga of the Commonwealth of Kentucky's legal battle against the online gambling industry. The latest twist in the continuing epic has Microgaming the worlds biggest supplier of online gambling software now named as an offender.

The lawsuit contends that Microgaming which is located in the Isle of Man "facilitates, hosts, operates, and profits from more than 120 online casino sites and 40 online poker sites. Microgaming manages and controls the various partnerships." The suit continues to state that the family of sites hosts more than three million visitors every month and the case against it can be litigated in the Commonwealth of Kentucky because it has "sufficient minimum contacts with the Commonwealth to establish a personal jurisdiction."

Legal issues aside it looks like the State of Kentucky is willing to draw a line in the sand when it comes to internet wagering and it is doing so retroactively. Lawyers for the State allege that Microgaming conducted commercial transactions, accepted monetary transfers, extended credit, hosted online poker games, set up and maintained accounts, took rake, shared in profits from its family of sites, employed proprietary software, and designed websites with "a purposeful, specific intention to do business over the internet" with players located within its borders. Lawyers maintained that, "A clear commercial link exists between Microgaming and residents of the Commonwealth and warrants a finding of personal jurisdiction."

All of this alleged activity from September 29th, 2005 to October 23, 2008 is the time frame Kentucky seeks damages for. The State wants Microgaming to pay back the amount that Kentucky residents lost during that time period.

The hard line stance Kentucky has taken jeopardises the domain names of 141 online gambling operators. The US state is seeking the forfeiture of some large publicly traded companies such as Party Gaming and Full Tilt and now even Microgaming is on the Kentucky hit list.

Love seems to be in the air for Kanye West and Kim Kardashian who were recently spotted getting cozy over dinner in a Chicago restaurant.

Kardashian and her previous boyfriend,NFL player Miles Austiin, split up just last month, not long after Austin signed a new six-year, $54 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys. Since then Kardashian has been spotted going out with John Mayer and now West.

Now, I’m not saying that she’s a gold digger, but she has not been seen with any broke gentlemen. Kardashian has clearly gotten used to the finer things in life as she just celebrated her 30th birthday where she reportedly enjoyed a $1 million diamond-encrusted cake.

Anyway, West and Kardashian were reportedly sharing a meal last Tuesday that included West rubbing her knee all night. An eye witness explained to Metro that, “They definitely looked like a couple.”

The following Saturday, Kardashian and West seemingly took their date to the next level by spending some time together aboard a private yacht.

As the reports of their dinner and boating have been hitting the media, some sources are claiming that the two are just friends and have been for a long time. This report has understandably been met with some skepticism since these are the first reports of them being seen together in settings like this, not to mention all the knee rubbing that West allegedly did on Tuesday. Besides, the two are clearly a perfect match with Kardashian’s butt being the only thing in the world as big as West’s ego.

Speaking of West’s ego, he recently appeared on Ellen sporting a new set of lower front teeth made entirely out of diamonds. That’s right, it’s not a grill it’s actually a new set of diamond teeth. Perhaps it was a present to himself as his new 34-minute video, Runaway, just hit the interwebs.

As the Internet forums and comment sections light up on whether Kanye’s latest endeavor is a success or failure, it will be interesting to see whether Kardashian books another romantic dinner with the hip-hop mastermind. Are they a couple? Is it just a PR stunt? Will her butt and his ego be able to fit into the same vehicle or is their love doomed to large vehicles like yachts? When most people want to gamble, they go to Las Vegas; if they can't, they'll take the nearest alternative and wish they were in Vegas.

That could change if Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS) and Genting Singapore have anything to say about. The two companies are working hard to create new gambling empires in Singapore, with the goal to serve as many tourists as possible.

According to Morgan Stanley analyst Mark Strawn, "Singapore has gone from zero to a $4.5 billion gaming revenue run rate in six months.” That's an extremely impressive number. But Barron's says that the market could grow even larger, reaching $7 billion to $10 billion in annual revenue by 2012.

Singapore lifted its 40-year-ban on gambling after eyeing the success of Macau, another Asian hot spot for gambling. However, only two gambling licenses were awarded – hence the fierce competition between Las Vegas Sands and Genting Singapore.

Still, Barron's Leslie P. Norton said that there are plenty of concerns about both stocks, particularly the potential for oversaturation. Norton says that Japan is expected to let the major gaming companies operate on its shores, and that enabling legislation could materialize as soon as next year. (It could, however, take an additional five years for the first casinos to open.)

"You don't need more than a couple of million people for a market, particularly at the high-roller end,” said Sheldon Adelson, chief executive of Las Vegas Sands. “These people will come again and again…. They're already here. Asia is far from saturated. It will never be satisfied in my lifetime. It will probably not be satisfied in yours."

Jennifer Mee, the infamous "Hiccup Girl" who gained brief notoriety back in 2007 for incessant hiccuping, says in the above video that she would never take a puff of marijuana – a hiccup cure that had been recommended to her. However it turns out that she will knock a guy off.

Nineteen-year-old Mee was involved in a robbery that went terribly wrong, resulting in the death of 22-year old Shannon Griffin, a man whom Mee lured into a robbery. Police reported that Mee lured Griffin to a St. Petersburg, Florida home, where he was ambushed by two other people and shot several times. Apparently, Griffin struggled before being fatally shot.

TMZ reports that police say Mee and the other two suspects have "admitted to their involvement" in the crime and now all the participants in the crime are being charged with first degree murder, a crime which could get them the death penalty if convicted.

Mee's prior hiccup condition, which she suffered from for a grueling five weeks, made her hiccup 50 times a minute. After trying every trick in the book, including hypnotherapy, the hiccups went away on their own.

According to The Associated Press, she is being held without bond.

Despite US Congress introducing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006 to effectively prohibit online gaming in the country, a recent report has revealed the number of college students gambling online has actually shot up over the past few years.

The University of Pennsylvania study by the Annenberg Adolescent Communication Institute revealed that 16% of male college students now admitted to gambling online compared to just 4.4% in 2008.

The telephone study conducted on fourteen to twenty-two year olds also concluded that the number of high school students gambling every month online had risen from 2.7% to 6.2% over the same period. High school females gambling online on a monthly basis were also up from 0.5% to 1.5%.

In total, 400,000 college-aged males were found to gamble each week online or 1.7 million every month. An additional half a million high school students could also be found gambling online every month.

Canadian provinces have been busy the past couple of months dealing with the online gambling issue. Several provinces have added Internet gambling to their list of offerings, while others have decided the added revenue generated from online gambling is not worth the hassle.

While the gambling debates have taken place, another vice has also been front and center. Canadian provinces are going after tobacco companies as part of their efforts to slow the use of tobacco in their jurisdictions.

Alberta will soon launch a lawsuit that could become one of the biggest of its kind in Canadian history. The lawsuit is seeking to recover billions of dollars from the tobacco industry for health care costs. Tobacco companies have been on the hit list of many countries in recent years.

"We are confident this action is the right thing to do," said Justice Minister Alison Redford. "Some of the most costly illnesses to treat, such as cancer and heart disease, are caused by smoking. The litigation we plan to commence will seek to share this burden with the manufacturers of this product."

The lawsuit is being met with criticism from those within the tobacco industry. There have been rumblings about the fact that these governments such as Alberta are profiting from tobacco sales through taxes. The industry also feels it is hypocritical to go after tobacco when gambling is openly accepted.

"I'm a smoker, so it may be biased, but how can the government claim that tobacco is the main reason for health care costs?" said Paul Timon. "What about the people who are addicted to gambling and need to get treatment?"

British Columbia, Ontario, and New Brunswick have started the push to recover funds from the tobacco companies. British Columbia launched their first online casino, PlayNow, this past summer. It is unlikely the gambling issue will have any bearing on the outcome of the tobacco lawsuits.

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has been in the forefront of the process of legalization of online gambling. Its political action committee, referred to as PokerPAC, tracks legislators on their inclination to support online gambling. It has released a list of those Congressional candidates participating in the mid-term elections who it considers will support online gambling.

Through a joint statement, PokerPAC chairmen former Senator Alfonse D'Amato and former Congressman Toby Moffett pointed out that the PPA has been successfully highlighting that advantages of establishing a safe and regulated market for online gambling and that more and more of Congressmen are showing a favorable response. They said, "This year's election is critical to ensuring that candidates are elected who support the rights of poker players and who choose to take action to protect American consumers. PokerPAC is proud to endorse these candidates who have been advocates for poker players and this great game we all love."

PokerPAC has come to its conclusions in a very systematic and transparent manner. Demonstrated support for online gambling has been based on favorable votes for the various bills in the House and Senate sub committees, co-sponsorship of bills, Congressional letters of support and public statements. The PokerPAC list contains 58 names. There are 44 Democrats and only 14 Republicans clearly indicating that the support is not bipartisan as often claimed. The most well known person in the list is however Republican Peter King from New York. Only two are non-incumbent Congressmen, whereas the rest are standing for re-election.

Online gambling advocates like PPA and iMEGA have lost certain key cases in the state Supreme Courts. It is evident that the only way ahead is through fresh legislation. Therefore the PokerPAC calls upon all players who want to see online gambling become a recognized, legal and regulated industry and urges them to vote for the candidates on its list. If there is adequate support in the House of Representatives, it will be easier for Barney Frank to schedule a discussion and vote on his bill HR 2267 that proposes a regulatory framework for online gambling. Now all eyes are on the November 2 election.

The Democrats have had a rough two years since they had one of their own, Barack Obama, become the president of the US. Now, with one week left until the mid-term elections, the Democrats are turning to two old friends, marijuana and Jon Stewart to help slow the Republican momentum.

Jon Stewart is holding a rally this weekend in Washington to counter the rally that conservative Glenn Beck held earlier this year. Stewart is so serious about his cause, that on Wednesday he had President Barack Obama on his show.

Unlike many of the conservative journalists on FOX News, Stewart actually grilled one of his own during the interview. Stewart asserted that Obama had not done enough during his time in office, that he had the opportunity to push the envelope further. President Obama respectfully disagreed with that assertion.

Democrats are not relying only on Stewart, however, to get the younger voters out to the polling booths next week. The party is also counting on California, where marijuana legalization has become a major issue.

Proposition 19 would legalize marijuana in California, and although the proposition is unlikely to pass, Democrats see the issue as one controversial enough that voters will turn out.

Back in 2004, Karl Rove used a similar approach to abortion. In order to secure the conservative base, Rove made abortion a major issue, understanding that if the conservative base came out to vote against abortion, they would likely also vote for all of the conservative candidates on the ballot.

This seems to be the strategy of the liberals this time around. If they can rally enough young adults to vote on the marijuana issue in California, there is a likelihood that their entire Democratic ticket would prosper from those voters showing up.

Stewart, meanwhile, has used his liberal comedic show on Comedy Central to urge young voters to turn up at the polling centers around the US.

Online gambling regulations in the US have been put on hold by lawmakers until after the mid-term elections next week. If the Democrats lose control of the House, it is likely that at least another two years will go by before Internet gambling laws are changed in the US.

Whether Stewart or the marijuana issue change the upcoming election will not be known until next week, but one thing is certain. The Democrats are going to go down fighting if they are going to lose control of the House, and they have turned to two of their biggest allies, marijuana and Stewart to help in the last ditch effort to save their majority.

The debate over a proposed casino in Western Maine has drawn many politicians, both current and former, into the issue. With less than a week left before the casino referendum goes before voters, former Governor Angus King has weighed in on the subject.

CasinosNo! has been the driving group behind the opposition to a casino in Oxford. The group has called on many former politicians in their effort to sway voters, and on Wednesday, the group saved one of the biggest for last. The former governor had remarks posted on the CasinosNo! website on Wednesday.

King has long been an opponent to gambling expansion, and he painted a picture of social destruction if the casino was to be approved. King and other politicians have for years sold the premise of fear in their attempt to keep casinos out of their jurisdictions.

In many states, the citizens have started to change the fear culture. In the Northeast alone, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and Connecticut have all expanded their casino options. In the Midwest, a similar situation is occurring in states such as Ohio, where voters approved casino gambling for the first time ever last November.

The Oxford casino proposal has been the main source of debate in Maine for several months. Those who are in favor of the casino point towards the thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenue that the casino would create. The revenue is especially attractive with the hope that it could help with the current budget deficit.

King and others that oppose the casino are concerned that a casino could bring increased problem gambling cases in Maine, therefore offsetting the millions of dollars that could be gained. It is almost the exact debate points that have been used in other states, with the positives eventually outweighing the negatives for voters in many of these states.

Research done by Nielson Media showed that casinos and online gambling are more popular than social networking is in the UK.

In the last year, Nielson Media found that 3.2 million people visited various online gaming sites, a 40% increase from the previous year. Research shows that only 2.2 million people visited Facebook or other social networking sites online. In addition to these numbers, the research also showed the typical demographic data for online casino players.

But it’s more than just woman whom are supporting the growing online gaming industry. Nielsen’s Neil Beston said “While the phenomenal growth in gambling sites over the last two years has been driven by men and women of all ages, it appears to be powered particularly by middle-aged men, the well-educated and high-earning households.” This breaks the long time theory that senior citizens and lower income households are who support the online gaming industry.

The fact that online casino players in the UK exceeded the number of social networking traffic is a sure sign that the online gaming market will continue to flourish.

Many provinces across Canada are starting their own government-regulated online gambling websites. British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario are all in favour of the idea, but the Martime provinces are not too keen on the prospect of making online gambling more available to their residents.

Nova Scotia Premier David Dexter has voiced his concerns about legalizing online gambling, stating that it presents the risk of increasing the over rate of gambling addiction in the province. Although the province could use additional tax revenue to help out with its billion-dollar deficit, Nova Scotia politicians are adamantly opposed to the idea of regulated online gambling for their residents.

“"We don't think it's consistent with our goal to try and reduce the harm that is done by gaming," says Dexter.

Prince Edward Island has also revealed its stance against the regulation of online gambling. Finance Minister Wes Sheridan, who was previously in favour of the proposal, has now changed his mind. Previously, the plan was to add online casinos games to the website belonging to the government agency. But, he has now decided that the appropriate solutions lies in finding a way to regulate the gambling activity that is currently taking place at existing websites.
