Don Johnson won nearly $6 million playing blackjack in one night, single-handedly decimating the monthly revenue of Atlantic City’s Tropicana casino. Not long before that, he’d taken the Borgata for $5 million and Caesars for $4 million. Here’s how he did it.

Despite a grinding recession and austerity measures that are hitting the pockets of many ordinary Italians, business is booming at "Bingo Re" - Europe's biggest gambling arcade in Rome.

Punters crowd among the arcade's hundreds of slot machines, sip espresso coffees from a gleaming bar or try their luck in the fully-catered bingo hall.

"It's been a record year for us," said Massimo Ruta, director of Italian operations for the Spanish gambling giant Codere which owns the arcade.

Codere operates 3,454 slot machines in 14 arcades across Italy and the turnover for its Italian operations rocketed up 63.2 percent last year to 224.2 million euros ($294.6 million) - even as the economy tipped into recession.

Lottery players are the biggest suckers in a nation buying more than $50 billion a year in tickets for the state-run games, which have the worst odds of any form of legal gambling.

Players in Georgia, whose per capita income is about 10 percent below the U.S. average, are doing the most damage to their personal finances compared with lottery-playing habits in other states, according to the Sucker Index created by Bloomberg Rankings. While the state had the sixth-highest prize payouts, 63 cents for each dollar spent, consumers there spent the second-highest chunk of their income on the lottery, which funds scholarships and pre-kindergarten.

The hunt for the next judges of the hit show The X Factor continues on Simon Cowell is looking for someone to replace Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, and there are conflicting stories as to whether an icon that was approached to join the show has turned down Cowell’s offer.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet X-Factor!

Pop star Britney Spears reportedly turned down The X Factor and American Idol creator’s offer, and those reports state that Spears, along with her agent and fiancé Jason Trawick, wants more money. However, there are new reports, including an interview with Cowell, saying that Spears is still in the mix for a judging role in the show’s second season in the United States. No one will confirm or deny anything at this point, although Cowell has said that a singer and an actress have emerged as possible replacements for Abdul and Scherzinger.

X Factor USA - Season 2 - Who will win?
Male +120
Female EVEN
Group +400

There is no new host on the horizon, says Cowell, as someone will be necessary to replace Steve Jones but the story here is Spears, who has sold well over 100 million records in the United States and even though she isn’t nearly as big as she once was, still commands respect in the industry. Last year’s “Femme Fatale” went platinum, it was relatively well-received and most of the singers on shows such as The X Factor are geared towards becoming the next Britney Spears (or the male version of Spears). It’s a relationship that would benefit everyone involved, unless Spears has some sort of project scheduled in which she literally can’t take the job, but the situation should be resolved shortly as Cowell has never been one to be patient.

Bovada Sportsbook already has lines up so hurry now and bet on X-Factor!

Ireland's online bookmakers will soon be liable to a transactions tax, bringing the country's internet gambling regime in line with that imposed on high-street shops.

According to Ireland's Sunday Independent, Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney will soon introduce legislation to this effect. The paper reports that Coveney intends to make the horse racing industry "pay for itself", moving away from a system under which the taxpayer provides the sport with a EUR56m (USD73m) subsidy.

Since the genie was let out of the bottle 30 years ago, expanding gambling has been a popular way to increase government spending without raising taxes. Now we may use it to finance a new football stadium.

Economics cannot say if this is good public policy. But some insights from economics may help frame the debate.

First, money in general is fungible and so are government revenues. If new revenues from gambling are a socially beneficial way of paying for a stadium, they would be an equally good way of paying for existing programs and thus reducing existing taxes. And, if we would not consider expanding gambling to fund current programs or reduce current taxes, why would this be a great option for a new publicly funded stadium?

It was like St. Patrick’s Day had come early to the Iowa Senate. The debate Tuesday on whether to legalize Internet poker in Iowa centered exclusively on how lawmakers should spend the anticipated pot of gold.

The Senate took up the controversial gambling bill late Tuesday afternoon, a day when the Iowa House was debating a high-profile education reform bill and a Senate committee was wading through a controversial proposal dealing with a nuclear power plant.

LIVE betting on sport is here to stay, and the Federal Government needs to do more to regulate it, says gambling firm Tabcorp.

Tabcorp chief executive David Attenborough said today the government was examining the issues of broadcasting odds during live events and the provision of live betting over the internet, among other matters.

Consumers can now bet on live sporting events over the phone but not over the internet.

One of the most unlikely fights you’re ever going to see will take place on March 31st in Ottawa as a pair of political figures will get in the ring….in the name of charity.

Justin Trudeau is extremely well known in Canada thanks to his father, the late Pierre Trudeau, who many feel was the best Prime Minister in the history of the country, and Justin has been in the public eye for his entire life. It was only fitting that he went into politics, and Trudeau has served in the House of Commons since 2008 for the Liberal Party. He has some boxing experience and is coming into this match as a huge underdog.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet political props!

Patrick Brazeau is a member of the Conservative Party but he has a background in karate and kickboxing, although he won’t be able to use his feet in this three-round match with amateur rules. At 37 (Trudeau turned 40 on Christmas of 2011), Brazeau is currently the youngest senator in Canada and he was also on the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples as the national chief.

Political Boxing Special - Patrick Brazeau vs Justin Trudeau March 31st 2012, Ottawa, Canada
Patrick Brazeau -500
Justin Trudeau +300

Trudeau, at 6’2”, has a four-inch height advantage over Brazeau, who weights eight pounds more than his opponent at 183 pounds. With his experience in martial arts, he was always going to be the favorite. The line for this bout opened with Brazeau as a -500 favorite, while Trudeau came in at +300. In a poll of Canadian citizens, 73% are giving the edge to Brazeau and the two have made a side bet: the loser has to wear a jersey from the winner’s political party, as well as get a haircut.

The true winner is charity, as all proceeds will go to FightForTheCure.ca, which conducts cancer research, which is dear to Trudeau’s heart as his father passed of the dreaded disease.
