Online gamblers are more likely to show addictive behaviors such as drinking and smoking cannabis than offline players, new research shows. It's a sensitive time for online gambling, with the US Department of Justice having announced that previous legislation banning online betting only relates to sports betting, and not to casino games. It means individual states can now legalize online gambling - if they wish.

Depending on whom you ask, it could be heaven-sent or a deal with the devil.

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson's dream to build Europe's first Las Vegas-style resort in Spain would certainly bring much needed relief to an economy lurching into another recession and struggling with sky-high unemployment.

But the millions that would rain down come with strings attached: Adelson wants Spanish laws bent so that gamblers can smoke inside the casinos and new zoning regulations allowing him to send buildings soaring above the skyline. And not everyone is thrilled about the idea of Spain hosting a European Sin City that could attract prostitution and mafia gangs -- and add gambling addiction to the woes of already desperate Spaniards.

The House of Representatives killed a bill to legalize casino gambling Wednesday, despite an unprecedented lobbying effort that had gotten the support of bipartisan legislative leaders.

The House rank-and-file embraced criticism that the bill, HB 593, would give an exclusive monopoly to four private businesses without any required investment or time line for when the casinos would be built.

“The problem with this bill is that it gives away to the gambling and casino interests a valuable asset that really belongs to the taxpayers of New Hampshire,” said Rep. Neal Kurk, R-Weare.

Both sides forecast a close vote but ultimately casino gambling opponents won handily, 195-154.

By the numbers, the minority Democratic bloc was decisive, as they opposed casino gambling by nearly a two-to-one margin. House Republicans split almost down the middle.

Manne wrote: Delaware lawmakers want gamblers to be able to get lucky by looking to their computers or mobile phones to gamble. The state wants to expand gambling from its three casinos to allowing people to gamble on their home computers and mobile phones.

Ashley Mellor of Dover said she wouldn't dare gamble on her iPhone or computer.

"Not a lot of people have time to go to the casino so now if it's on your or so close to your hand on your phone it'd be super easy for people to waste their money," said Mellor.

That money may be wasted for some, but its money to gain for casinos like Dover Downs. The state's proposal says licensing fees for all three casinos would go down more than $7 million dollars a yea. But, the state would restrict how the casinos could spend the savings.

An Australian internet gambling tycoon who became an FBI informant has helped bring down America's illegal online gambling sites.

Gold Coast man Daniel Tzvetkoff, 29, was arrested two years ago in Las Vegas.

He was facing a 75-year jail sentence for laundering $500 million through his company Intabill.

Soon after his arrest he struck a deal with prosecutors and became a star informant, blowing the whistle on several businessmen.

About a year after his arrest, authorities shut down the multi-billion dollar illegal online gambling industry in the US.

While Gov. Rick Scott and the business community celebrate the governor's signature this week on $1 billion package of tax cuts over three years, some perspective is in order about the trickle-down impact. Described as an economic development accelerant and job creation strategy, certainly worthwhile goals, such a steep reduction in revenue will come at a cost.

The cuts will affect the everyday Floridian in a variety of ways -- but mostly negative.

The 14th season of Dancing With The Stars is underway now and the first couple have found their way to the exit after just two performances. Now that the axe has been wielded once, the competition will really start to heat up.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova and partner Tony Dovolani were one of three couples to receive a score of 20 in their first performances but it got even worse with a 17 in the second performance and that sealed their fate as the two got the boot on Wednesday night. It was no surprise that this pair was going home as Navratilova was struggling from the beginning but she held her head high and left with class and grace, which were also traits of her storied career.

Dancing With the Stars Season 14 - Who will win?
William Levy 2/1
Donald Driver 4/1
Katherine Jenkins 4/1
Jaleel White 9/2
Maria Menounos 8/1
Gavin DeGraw 50/1

But a bigger story may have been Maria Menounos, who still performed despite breaking two ribs and she gritted through the pain to, along with partner Derek Hough. They put up a 25 on the scoreboard in the second performance and an overall score of 46. Some are wondering if Menounos, the co-host of Extra, should even still be in the competition, but she is proving to be tough and that should take the competition to another level.

The highest score was 52, which went to classical singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas, and they put up a pair of 26s to come away as the early favorites. A disappointment in the second night was actor Jaleel White teamed with Kym Johnson, who followed their 26 on the first night with a 22 on the second for a total of 48. Two couples (Disney star Roshon Fagan and Chelsie Hightower, and William Levy and Cheryl Burke) had 49 points, and this is shaping up to be one of the most competitive seasons of Dancing With The Stars ever.

It is still early in the American Idol season as there are nine competitors remaining on the reality show juggernaut but you can pick out the early leaders already with Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips coming away as the clear-cut favorites to win Season 11.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet American Idol!

One of the many props you can bet on for American Idol is a head-to-head matchup and the matchup between Sanchez and Phillips is about as close as you can get. Going against one another, each is rated at -115 in a “who will get eliminated first” prop, and these are two performers who are very confident in their abilities and have gotten off to a hot start.

American Idol Season 11 - Who will be eliminated 1st?
Jessica Sanchez -115
Phillip Phillips -115

Sanchez is a 16-year-old from San Diego and is used to the glare of the spotlight from her time on America’s Got Talent, and she got rave reviews for her rendition of Billy Joel’s “Everybody Has A Dream”. It would be a real surprise if she didn’t make to the final three - at least - and she was previously the 9/4 favorite at Bovada Sportsbook. Meanwhile, Phillips is a 21-year-old from Georgia who has had the judges and viewers in the palm of his hand from the beginning of the competition but he sometimes has a tendency to go against the advice of mentor Jimmy Iovine and the other judges, Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler and that could come back to bite him in the end.

There is no good reason that these two shouldn’t be in the final three, so if you’re betting on this prop, you could be betting on who you think is going to win this season of American Idol, so keep that in the back of your mind.

In a warning from experts to MPs, in the last decade there has been an increase in the amount of women who gamble.

There are those who only enter the national lottery, but aside from that the proportion of the female population who gamble has soared by nearly a third to more than half, for the first time ever. By gambling, that could be in a casino, buying a scratch card, playing in an online bingo promotion or simply playing the lottery every week.

We’re getting down to crunch time at American Idol as the competition is down to eight singers after Thursday night’s elimination show. It really shouldn’t surprise anyone who got the boot and many thought that it was a week late.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet American Idol!

This week’s theme was “Their Personal Idols” as the competitors were mentored by Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame (although she has managed to make a name for herself outside of that band, you could say). The bottom three consisted of Skylar Laine and her rendition of Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder and Lead”, Heejun Han for his version of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song For You” and Hollie Cavanagh’s take on fourth-season American Idol winner Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take The Wheel”. Interestingly enough, Han was fortunate to make it this far after a horrible rendition of Billy Joel’s My Life”, one that judge Steven Tyler lambasted him for and told him that he needed to take the competition more seriously. Han definitely heeded the Aerosmith singer’s advice and did a much better job this week but that didn’t save him from the chopping block as Han was eliminated on Thursday night.

The favorites for the competition didn’t hurt themselves this week, as Phil Phillips earned rave reviews from Nicks for his performance of Jonny Lang’s “Still Rainin’”, and Colton Dixon did justice to Lighthouse’s “Everything”. But the star of the week may have been Jessica Sanchez, who tore down Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams” and she may be the favorite now after her efforts. You can tell that Sanchez is a performance veteran at just 16 years old, and it would be the upset to end all reality-show upsets if she wasn’t in the top three, at the very least. Sanchez may have pole position on American Idol this season.

There was much hype and appreciation last year of the decision taken by the German state of Schleswig Holstein to regulate and license online gambling. Schleswig Holstein had broken away from the other states in Germany and proposed a model with full private operators' participation on a competitive basis. However, though applications have been received, actual licenses cannot be issued until the European Commission considers and approves the proposed Schleswig Holstein monitoring arrangements. The independent legal expert Christoff Enaux has indicated that it could be three months before the European Commission accords the necessary clearance. The problem is that elections are due in Schleswig Holstein in May. It is expected that the present opposition SPD party could come back in power.
