Assembly Democrats are pushing for legislative hearings later this year to examine the prospect of allowing casino-style gambling at the Meadowlands. The idea has bounced around in various forms for a very long time, but continues to take on added urgency as the state’s horse industry threatens to fade away completely. The presumption is that expanded gambling at the Meadowlands track would boost purses and revitalize horse racing, not only at the Meadowlands but at Monmouth Park and Freehold as well.

Viewed from a statewide perspective, a Meadowlands casino certainly has potential beyond the horses. It is, at the very least, well worth examining considering its likelihood of boosting overall gambling-related revenue flowing into the state’s coffers.

Pennsylvania's 11 casinos pulled in more than $233.1 million in gross slot machine revenue last month, setting an all-time monthly high since the state's first casino opened in November 2006 and cementing the state's status as the nation's second-largest gambling market.

The slots totals released Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board include revenue from two test nights and one day of operations at the state's 11th casino, Valley Forge Casino Resort, which opened Saturday. Overall, the figures broke the previous monthly record of $218.3 million set in July, and they represent an 8.5 percent increase over March 2011.

"Virtually every jurisdiction in the country would kill for that kind of growth, especially in a sluggish economy," said Joe Weinert, senior vice president of Spectrum Gaming Group, a New Jersey casino consulting firm, who called the state the "envy of the casino industry."

When slots and table game revenues are combined, Pennsylvania has surpassed New Jersey and grown into the second-largest casino market in the country behind Las Vegas. The two traded places in July, Weinert said, and, by January, Pennsylvania had grown into a $3.66 billion market, compared to a $3.3 billion market for New Jersey.

Slot machines are almost fully installed and table games have been delivered to Ohio's second casino, scheduled to open in late May in Toledo.

That was among updates heard by Ohio regulators Wednesday in Columbus as the state prepares for the openings of four voter-approved casinos in the next year or so.

Jeffrey Goodman, the vice president of casino operations for Hollywood Casino Toledo, told the Ohio Casino Control Commission that table games should be set up by mid-month, and that slots would be ready for regulators to test around then, too.

More than 510 table and poker dealers have been trained, Goodman said, and surveillance equipment is now installed.

LeAnn-Rimes

Just because The X Factor doesn’t hit the small screen for its second season on Fox until September, it doesn’t mean it is out of the public conscience. They’ve managed the stay in the news during its off-season quite a bit while looking for a new judge. Creator Simon Cowell decided to part ways with his former American Idol cohort Paul Abdul, as well as former Pussycat Doll Nicole Schwerzinger, along with host Steve Jones, and he’s been on the hunt for replacements ever since.

So far, Cowell’s search has included the late Whitney Houston, who was reportedly approached about judging the show before she passed away in February and then he moved on to Stacy Keibler and Britney Spears, but the two sides have yet to come to any conclusion. In the meantime, country star LeAnn Rimes is Cowell’s next target to join himself and music executive L.A. Reid on the judging panel, and the two are apparently in official talks as we speak.

X Factor USA - Season 2 - Who will win?
Male +120
Female EVEN
Group +400

Rimes actually got her start on Star Search as an eight-year-old, so she would know a little bit about what the competitors are going through. The 29-year-old is a veteran in the entertainment industry and has a pair of Grammys to her name thanks to a voice that had garnered rave reviews, so she knows a thing or two about singing. She also has an album, “Spitfire”, due sometime this year and an appearance on The X Factor could help her album sales. A combination of Spears and Rimes, two country girls (although Spears decided to choose the pop route), would be potentially entertaining and good for ratings, although you get the feeling that Cowell would drop either if he managed to land Adele, who dominated the Grammys this year and he is reportedly chasing as well.

The state of New Jersey has altered and voted for online gambling in the region and now that the authorities are very close to passing the bill permitting online casino and gambling legislation, poker players in the region can soon happily gamble online without worrying that they might be in violation of the law.

This bill will make New Jersey one of the first US states to legalize online gambling; this move may put it back on the map for its casinos and give Las Vegas competition or revenue.

State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, D-Union, says his aim is to make New Jersey the “Silicon Valley of international gaming.”

Lesniak is the sponsor of a bill in Trenton that would let Atlantic City casinos take bets electronically not just from New Jersey residents, as had previously been floated, but from gamblers in other states and countries.

Sound far-fetched? It’s not. Online gambling has been a multibillion-dollar global industry with a huge contingent of U.S. players. Poker has been at the center of it.

Arnie Wexler one of the foremost experts on gambling addiction and a recovering gambler who placed his last bet on 4/10/68

Would like to share his thought on inter net gambling

The younger a person starts gambling the greater the risk of becoming addicted to Gambling.

Arnie Wexler, said legalizing inter net gambling would create more addicts, especially among minors, without providing sufficient resources for their treatment.

"A lot of these young kids that know the computer inside out are going to find a way to start gambling," Wexler said. "How are they going to prevent (underage gambling)?

"The biggest problem I have with Internet gambling is how do you stop kids," Arnie Wexler said. "The Internet is the quickest, fastest way to addiction."

How are you going to control the 16-year-old kid from placing a bet?"

Attorney General Luther Strange announced Thursday that the Judiciary Committee of the Alabama House of Representatives has approved House Bill 414, legislation advocated by the Attorney General to fight illegal gambling.

“I am pleased that the House Judiciary Committee has taken action on our recommendations to make Alabama’s gambling laws stronger and more effective,” said Attorney General Strange. “I want to thank Representatives Allen Farley and Paul DeMarco for their leadership in moving this bill forward, and I urge members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to pass this bill as soon as possible. This is my top legislative priority.”

A Manitoba government decision to move into online gambling is just a “desperate attempt” to control the province’s growing deficit, a Tory critic charged Thursday.

“Greg Selinger has created a huge deficit and now he wants Manitobans to bet on it,” Tory gaming critic Cliff Graydon said of Manitoba’s premier. “I’m somewhat surprised that he feels this is the way to go ... He’s investing in a 6/49 ticket to try and balance his budget. I don’t think that’s good management.”

Manitoba Lotteries is partnering with British Columbia to deliver online gaming for Manitobans beginning next year, Manitoba Lotteries Minister Steve Ashton announced Thursday.

Under pressure to beat other states in the race to legalize new ways of gambling, a state Senate committee has approved a bill authorizing internet wagering in New Jersey.

The bill, which includes no provision for the state’s race tracks, is a revised version of a measure vetoed in the last legislative session by Gov. Chris Christie, who is opposed to allowing gambling outside Atlantic City.

The hearing Tuesday before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee included the usual arguments by representatives of the horse racing industry, who contend their exclusion from the millions of dollars in profits envisioned from internet gambling will kill their sport.

Remember, the house always wins.

Increasingly, that phrase can be applied not only to Las Vegas casinos, but also to Facebook, which takes a 30 percent cut of game developers’ revenues for the right to be on the social network. “Facebook is almost the same business [as casinos],” said Chris Satchell, CTO and EVP of research and development at International Game Technology, which makes both traditional casino games and social games. “Facebook has real estate and customers, just like the casinos.”

SPRINGFIELD -- Those involved in negotiations over gambling laws in Illinois believe some sort of expansion will again be debated this in the General Assembly this spring.

But no one knows what form that could take.

Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, said last week that discussions among the interested parties — legislators, casinos, racetracks and the governor’s office — have progressed slowly.

“I don’t see the end in sight, and we might find another way to get to the end,” Lang said.

He outlined three possible approaches to gambling expansion.

Many mornings this spring, my roommate, Teddy, and I have speculated about how the Republican candidates are likely to fare in states we've never visited. Our third roommate, Ben, stays quiet and seeks out the most reliable polling information he knows. "InTrade has Romney up by 4," Ben will say. When he does so, my stomach churns a bit -- and not because of Romney.

Canada’s Miss Universe will be crowned in Toronto on May 19th but the event has received a ton of publicity already due to a unique situation. Regardless of whether she wins or loses, one of the participants involved figures to come out on top.

Join Bovada Sportsbook right now and bet Entertainment Props!

Jenna Talackova, a 23-year-old from Vancouver, was booted from the competition by the Miss Universe Organization when they found out that she had received gender-reassignment surgery in 2010. The organization states a rule that an entrant into the competition has to be a “naturally born” female in order to qualify but Donald Trump, who owns the organization, stepped in to overturn the ruling and the door has been opened for Talackova to be welcomed back into the Miss Universe Canada Pageant, although nothing is official yet. Talakova has all the necessary identification as a woman and she started taking hormones at age 14 before she decided to get the surgery and she has argued that she is not only a woman, but her past doesn’t exactly give her an advantage over her competitors. This is an argument that some have used in the case of sports and the Olympics when it comes to transgendered individuals but it won’t fly in the world of beauty pageants.

Will Jenna Talackova win the Miss Universe Canada Pageant?
Yes 25/1

Will Jenna Talackova Finish in the Top 3 in the Miss Universe Canada Pageant?
Yes 8/1

Right now, you would find odds of 8/1 for Talackova to finish in the top three of the Miss Universe Canada Pageant and 25/1 to go on and represent the country at the global event, which takes place later in 2012, but this is a larger issue than just a beauty pageant now. Talackova is going to have a lot of people on her side and she could very well end up taking the competition, so keep an eye on this story over the next month.

Legislation that would allow people to gamble online in virtual Atlantic City casinos took a tentative step forward last week.

Although the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee voted 11-0 to advance the proposal, five senators voiced concerns, primarily about excluding horse tracks from the plan. And while the bill’s chief sponsor expressed hopes online gambling could be running by the fall, he also said an agreement hasn’t yet been reached with Gov. Chris Christie, who vetoed a similar bill once before.

“What we want to do is get this Internet gaming up and going before the end of the year, hopefully by September, so that New Jersey can be the first in the nation and lead the way,” said Sen. Raymond Lesniak, D-Union.
