Online gambling could be something the Federal government in the USA should legalize so people won’t have to line up at state borders to by their lottery tickets. Every time a big lottery prize is in the offing in the USA, people that live in states that don’t offer lottery tickets drive for miles and wait in long line ups to get them.

The word problem in the title tells us pretty clearly that Tepperman, a veteran professor of sociology at the University of Toronto, does not regard gambling as a harmless vice.

This is his third book on the subject, and the most comprehensive. It is a huge topic, and Tepperman and his co-author, Kristy Wanner, tackle many facets of it in some detail.

They seem to have been too broad in their approach, though, and perhaps should have zeroed in on a few specifics.

Wanner is a PhD with a specialty in sports psychology from Columbia, Mo. She is a research consultant with the U.S. National Collegiate Athletics Association. Most of the text is Tepperman's.

NO ONE should be surprised to see that Sen. Robert Ford is blocking Senate debate of legislation to close what some judges think is a loophole in our state’s anti-gambling law. To the contrary, the fact that the old video-gambling industry’s most brazen advocate would rush to the defense of an industry that protests that it’s really not gambling goes a long way toward demonstrating that it is, in fact, gambling.

The 14th season of Dancing With The Stars is starting to hit high gear and not just on the screen but behind the scenes as well. The big news this week was a reported fight behind Family Matters star Jaleel White and partner Kym Johnson.

White stated that the pair definitely had an argument, but that it wasn’t as bad as the media is making it out to be and that he is surprised that the spat received that much attention. The two managed to put any problems behind them as White and Johnson received a score of 25 in Week 3, which wasn’t great, but it wasn’t awful. Classical singer Katherine Jenkins and partner Mark Ballas are running away with the competition as they had a high score of 29, just missing a perfect score by a point. They have had the high score in each week of Dancing With The Stars. Right now, they should be considered the favorites by a country mile and it’ll take a lot to get past them.

Actor Jack Wagner found himself on the outside looking in this week as he was sent home after he and partner Anna Trebunskaya were eliminated with a 24. It’s a shame because you get the feeling that the two were really starting to pull it together, but viewers decided it was time for them to go despite being one of four pairs with a score of 24. Now with one less team in the competition, Dancing With The Stars is about to really heat up.

Legislation that would allow people to gamble online in virtual Atlantic City casinos took a tentative step forward last week.

Although the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee voted 11-0 to advance the proposal, five senators voiced concerns, primarily about excluding horse tracks from the plan. And while the bill’s chief sponsor expressed hopes online gambling could be running by the fall, he also said an agreement hasn’t yet been reached with Gov. Chris Christie, who vetoed a similar bill once before.

The British Columbia Lotteries Corporation, considered one of the more powerful online lottery groups in North America, has partnered with another Canadian gambling group, Manitoba Lotteries to bring online gambling to Manitobans.

The World Trade Organization USA Antigua and Barbuda saga that has been on the legal table for a number of years now has once again surfaced in the news. The aged legal dispute that Antigua the small island nation in the Caribbean has been waging with the USA is not going away as American trade officials would like it to do.

American trade officials claimed back in 2003 that the citizens of the USA needed to be protected from the uncertain status of online gambling in their defence against a claim by the Antiguan government to the WTO that America had violated a signed trade agreement. The WTO Appellate Body in 2005 said while the States had a right to claim it was protecting its people but it could not have interstate online horse racing too. This was a clear violation of US obligations under the General Agreement on Trade in Services. The WTO gave the USA 11 months to either allow Antigua access to the US market or shut down US domestic online horse race betting.

The Corbett administration said in announcing that it wants to hire a private lottery manager that Pennsylvania needs a more profitable lottery.

As it happens, significant innovation is afoot in state lotteries, industry analysts say. And Gov. Tom Corbett said he believes that handing the reins of the Pennsylvania Lottery to a private company will not only boost innovation, but encourage higher cash flow by linking it to the company’s compensation.

For now, Pennsylvania has the nation’s sixth-largest lottery, with more than $3 billion in annual sales. But things could change fast.

I find this incredible. U.S. citizens blocked out a market that the rest of the developed world has access to. Of course, I am speaking about the CFD market. CFD stands for “contract for difference” and it is a marketplace where regular people can trade the markets of the large trading houses without the same capital requirements. So, basically it is a form of democratized financial trading for the masses.

Lawmakers have adjourned after failing to approve a bill to expand gambling to include table games, although the measure could be considered if a special session is called by the governor.

The Maryland General Assembly adjourned at midnight Monday.

But why are they deciding for us? Shouldn't we the people decide? After all, four times between 1978 and 2004 we went to the polls statewide to decide gambling issues. We voted because the experts told us that our state constitution bans gambling, other than what we already had, and the only way to allow more was to change the constitution. Because only voters can change the constitution, proponents asked us to change it. The results: We voted to allow the lottery and limited slot machines, but three times we rejected casinos.

But right now, there are at least 13 performers that have a chance to win it all, which will net them some cash and a record contract. Tony Vincent (7/1), Katrina Parker (15/2), Erin Willett (10/1), Pip (12/1) and Chris Mann (12/1) are all within a shout of the top favorites and then there are two more singers at 14/1 and four more at 16/1. It’ll take a lot for anyone past 25/1, where the next contestants start, to come away with the victory.

Right now, Lucca and Campbell are standing out from the rest but it is still very early in the proceedings and a lot can happen between now and the season finale. That all leads to great ratings for NBC in an extremely difficult demographic of fans that watch these sort of shows. They have a charismatic group of judges in Aguilera, Green, Levine and Shelton, who not only now how to get around the industry

A California bill that seeks to raise money by legalizing Internet gambling has the big players in the state's betting industry - and some fresh faces from the tech world - competing for a cut of the envisioned bounty.

They've created alliances, tested websites and lobbied lawmakers. But what many see as an inevitable move online for legal gambling is also creating tension and uncertainty.

Yet America is now opening the floodgates to organized gambling. In December, the Department of Justice announced it was reversing its position that all Internet gambling was illegal.

That decision is about to create a boom in online gambling. New Jersey is close to approving a bill to allow gambling online in virtual Atlantic City casinos. Delaware, Nevada, California and Florida are considering similar bills. Within the year, high-stakes poker will be available on every work desk and mobile phone in the nation.

About 10:30 p.m. Monday, House Speaker Michael E. Busch walked across the State House and delivered a grim message to Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller: There weren't enough votes in the House to pass the gambling bill.

Everything was unraveling.

The legislature's leaders had spent the day crafting a deal. The Senate would agree to the House approach to raising income taxes. The House would pass, or at least attempt to pass, a gambling bill that was a high priority for Miller.

The question of online gambling raised its head once again in the United States this week, when the Commodity Futures Trading Commission sited "the public interest" in barring a Chicago exchange from offering futures contracts tied to the outcome of the 2012 Presidential Elections.
