The state's House tax committee has approved a proposal to expand charitable gambling and allow electronic pull tabs, electronic bingo and sports-themed tip boards.

The measure passed on a voice vote after a contentious three-hour hearing. The bill was originally earmarked to fund a Vikings stadium, but Rep. John Kriesel, R-Cottage Grove, got it approved without a stadium link. He said he worried the stadium controversy could kill the gambling expansion.

"I want to make sure we take care of the charities and the bars, those small businesses across the state. That's the focus. If the Vikings stadium bill gets revived, if there's a shot for it, then I'm cool with this being the funding source," Kriesel said.

"From the start, that was the position on it. But things weren't looking so good today. Things aren't looking good at this minute, so you have to be flexible."

The bill moves next to the House Ways and Means committee. The state Senate late tonight also scheduled a Friday committee meeting on three separate Vikings stadium bills.

We’ve seen it all so far on the 14th season of Dancing With The Stars: rumored arguments during practices, stars with broken ribs and concussions, and we’re only five weeks into the show. Another participant was sent home this week while the favorites got back to the form that made them the team to beat early on.

The theme this week on Dancing With The Stars was Latin Week and the bottom two couples were actor Jaleel White and partner Kym Johnson (who were involved in the argument rumors which proved to be true, but overblown, says White) and singer Gavin DeGraw and his partner, Karina Smirnoff. The two dueled to Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory”, but DeGraw was given the boot while White goes on to dance another day.

The high scores of the week went to two pairs: classical singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas, and actor William Levy and Cheryl Burke. For Jenkins and Ballas, it was a return to form after receiving the highest score in each of the first three rounds. After falling to a 24 in Week 4’s Rock Week, Jenkins and Ballas seemed to get back on track and resume their status as the favorites to win the competition.

There are still eight pairs left in the competition and it is anyone’s ballgame. Next week’s Motown theme should prove to be a stiff test for the contestants in the latest season of Dancing With The Stars, but the smart money is on Jenkins and Ballas continuing to roll through the season and it’ll take a superlative effort to knock them off their perch.

A plan to build casinos in Massachusetts is forcing Foxwoods to revamp their business plan.

The resort casino in Connecticut is looking at different ways to attract people and raise revenue, including turning to online gambling.

22News asked western Massachusetts residents if they would be interested. Donna Wolf of West Springfield says online gambling wouldn't be the same as going to a casino.

“If I'm going to go gamble, I'm going to go there and have a good time,” Wolf said. “I don't think it is something you can go online and enjoy and have a good time.”

Foxwoods revenues are down 5% from last year. The casino expects that number to go down even more when casinos are built in Massachusetts. The state’s gaming law allows for the licensing of three casinos in the state, with a slots parlor being allowed at one of the state’s racetracks.

Bookmaker William Hill said yesterday that the growing popularity of online betting helped first-quarter profits jump 19 per cent.

Alongside a “robust” performance from its traditional high street operations, the group said turnover from online sports betting exceeded £50 million in a single week for the first time during the quarter.

Mobile device turnover reached £11m in a single week, as the group said its new Sportsbook app for Apple devices gave it access to thousands of customers who had never bet with the company before.

Over the last week there have been two unusual responses, bordering on veiled threats, to online gambling in the United Kingdom. One of them came externally from the reputed and popular online gambling jurisdiction of Gibraltar and the other internally from Northern Ireland.

According to a report in the Gibraltar Chronicle, the government is peeved with the United Kingdom's plan to impose a point of consumption tax on online gambling operators. A large number of operators servicing the British online gambling market are licensed and regulated in Gibraltar. They provide a regular revenue source and direct and indirect employment to over 5,000 Gibraltar citizens. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo pointed out to the British Government that the proposed UK point of consumption tax would severely and adversely affect Gibraltar's economy.

London Riccardo Zacconi will always remember Christmas Eve 2003 — it was when his company almost went bust.

Instead of jetting off to spend time with his family, Zacconi and his then business partner, Toby Rowland, son of the late Tiny Rowland, were hunched over the office fax machine waiting for a letter of fin-ancial support that would keep their online gaming operation afloat.

At the last minute, the vital document arrived, with the promise of backing from an old colleague. Nearly nine years later, that vote of confidence looks likely to prove a shrewd investment.

The intensity is ramping up on the 11th season of American Idol and if anything, the fact that Jessica Sanchez needed to be saved last week showed that you have to bring your best in this competition all the time or else you’ll be given your walking papers. One of the favorites learned that the hard way on Thursday night.

The theme of American Idol this week was “Now and Then”, which means the contestants were singing a modern hit along with an older classic and the bottom three were Colton Dixon (Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Earth, Wind And Fire’s “September”), Hollie Cavanagh (Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” and Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man”) and Elise Testone (Alicia Keys’ “No One” and Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”). Dixon was the surprise of the bunch as he had never been in the bottom three, while Testone had been there the last three weeks and Cavanagh was in danger in two of the last three weeks. Somehow, they managed to stay on while Dixon, who was one of the favorites to win the competition along with Sanchez and Phil Philips, was eliminated to bring the number of contestants down to six.

Sanchez and Phillips are now the favorites to go all the way on this edition of American Idol, while Cavanagh and Testone are still in it, as well as Josh Ledet and Skylar Laine. Phillips is the only one that has never been in the bottom three but he has received some criticism as well in the past. You just never know what is going to happen on American Idol, and you can bet that Dixon’s exit won’t be the last surprise on the hit television show.

America is the land of opportunity and that means if there is something that needs change a company or individual or organization can lobby in the US Congress for those changes. This process takes tons of time and money and lobbying efforts may not even pay off.

The American federal government posts the lobbying budgets in an effort to keep the process transparent but as in all things government the process isn’t terribly accurate. Some firms lobby on a number of issues and the funds aren’t broke down with any detail. Online gambling lobbying has a number of proponents that make the cash flow in Washington D.C. influencing politicians to vote in a certain direction.

For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the difference between staying online and losing Internet connections this summer.

Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut down.

The chairman of the gambling subcommittee in the House of Delegates hopes there are no gaming bills in any special session called to fix the current budget mess — there are not enough votes to pass a sixth casino, he said. “I hope not to see any gaming bills during the special session,” said Del. Frank S. Turner, chairman of the Finance Resources Subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee.

“We’ve got five facilities” for video lottery terminals already, and having a sixth slot machine casino “was not a good strategy,” said Turner, D-Howard.

The push by Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr., D-Calvert, for a sixth gambling operation at National Harbor near the Wilson Bridge in Prince George’s County was a major point of difference on the last day of the session, when the General Assembly failed to pass tax hikes to avoid more budget cuts.

Japanese love of Pachinko machines created a major industry.

Pachinko is a very popular mechanical game in Japan. Although the mobile arcade games grow in popularity, traditional Pachinko machines still lead the way.

Pachinko machine resembles pinball machines in a sense that balls are triggered and make their way down. The difference is that these machines are vertical and there are no flippers to bounce back the balls as casino gambling news portray.

International Game Technology is poised to premiere "American Idol" on Facebook, and wants players to one day wager on the interactive version of its slot machine on the Internet.

While state and federal lawmakers inch along toward legalization of online gaming, IGT and the casino industry's other large slot machine makers are already lining up for a piece of the potential action.

And when it comes to the future of those who provide the technological bones of the gaming industry is debated, the only question is how much of the future online prize they'll want.

Bellerock Entertainment, the industry leading online gambling group, which runs a number of top sites such as Jackpot City Casino and Riverbelle Online Casino, recently released interesting new gambling statistics regarding the UK market.

One of the points highlighted in the study showed that there was a significant rise in UK women online gamblers seeking their gaming entertainment on the internet.

The statistics showed that the number of women who play casino games online had quadrupled between 2007 and 2010 and that there are now nearly just as many women playing online as men.

Bellerock Entertainment showed that 48.38% of all online gamblers in the United Kingdom are women, compared to 51.62% who are men. This is clearly a different gambling landscape than what was seen only four or five years ago, when UK online gambling was dominated by male players.

The Gaming Commission on Tuesday agreed to seek a delay in its prescribed takeover of the state’s horse and simulcast racing industry, arguing that getting fluent by next month on the intricacies of the racing business will complicate its broader mission of getting casinos up and running.

Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby also said the commission would seek updates to the economic forecasts for jobs and revenue promised by proponents of expanded gambling, even if that means taking extra time to understand the impacts of casinos before issuing licenses.
