Reality television is big business now and nowadays, the performance aspect of it – shows like America’s Got Talent – cost a lot of money to produce. On the other hand, America’s Got Talent is in its seventh season and just signed on for an eighth in 2013. That will continue to roll on until the genre comes to an end or at least slows down. Recently, it posted excellent weekly numbers in terms of ratings among a variety of demographics and they’ve been smart to place their season in the summer when there isn’t as much sports on television. America’s Got Talent has even managed to avoid the European Championship, which is receiving some of their highest-ever ratings in the United States. So no fear, fans of America’s Got Talent, your show won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

The Australian government is set to consider a report calling for increased liberalisation of the online gambling sector, announce Gaming Club. One of the first online gaming sites, Gaming Club reports that the new legislation would not only offer Australian gamblers an increased level of consumer protection, but also a greater selection of online gaming options.

The interim report to the federal government could lead to an increase in the number of sports betting options available online, including live in-play sports betting, which is currently only legal via mobile and in person. Online poker tournaments could also be legalised as part of the proposals.

As well as recommending legalisation of in-play betting online, the report proposes linking online gaming laws to match-fixing laws, appointing the Australian Communications and Media Authority to oversee online gambling, and new harm-prevention measures, including self-exclusion from websites.

Australia's current stance on online gambling is decidedly muddled. While it is not illegal for Australian citizens to play casino games online, it is illegal for companies to offer these services online to Australians. Revenues suggest that many Australians do play online casino games, spending an estimated AU$790 million on offshore gambling sites in 2008, with that figure now estimated at AU$1 billion per year.

Sports betting, meanwhile, is legal online, with a few exceptions, including that of live in-play betting. A nation of sports lovers, Australia's sports betting sector has seen steady growth over the past ten years, with revenue growing to more than AU$400 million.

The recent European Parliament Conference in Brussels, heard Michel Barnier address the need for measures to regulate and supervise legal gambling sites while putting pressure on so called illegal websites that offer gambling services to those in Europe.

Barnier’s portfolio as Commissioner for Internal Market and Services concerns the development of the 480 million strong European single market, to promote the free movement of people, goods, services and capital. Thus it is clearly a leading role but has become more complex as the single market for services such as online gambling has developed.

State lawmakers have approved a bill authorizing online betting in Delaware and more venues for sports wagering and other gambling.

The bill, which cleared the House earlier this month, was approved by the Senate on a 14-to-6 vote Wednesday.

In addition to allowing online slots and table games, the bill expands keno beyond Delaware's three casinos to at least 100 other sites, and betting on NFL football to at least 20 noncasino sites.

Officials say the new gambling revenue will allow them to eliminate $4 million in slot machine fees paid by the casinos and cut their table game fees from $6.75 million to $3 million. In return, the casinos would pledge to spend an equal amount on traditional business expenses such as marketing, capital improvements and debt reduction.

As Nevada gaming lobbyists diligently lay the groundwork for what might be a final end-of-the-year push for federal legislation legalizing online poker, perhaps the biggest wild card is a man who has vowed to spend as much as $100 million influencing this year’s election.

Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson has spent $26 million on the presidential race and is likely to sink resources into Nevada’s U.S. Senate race — in which his longtime nemesis, Democrat Shelley Berkley, is running.

And Adelson, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp., doesn’t like online gambling. At all.

Berkley’s Republican opponent, U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, stands to benefit from the substantial influence and money Adelson will bring to the race. But Heller continues to favor online poker.

“Sen. Heller continues to support legalizing Internet poker and has been working closely with both Sen. (Harry) Reid and Sen. (Jon) Kyl on legislation to achieve this goal,” Heller’s spokesman, Stewart Bybee, said in a written statement.

Bybee said Heller wasn’t available for an interview for this story.

Jan Jones, vice president of public affairs for Caesars Entertainment, which has been actively lobbying for passage of online poker legislation, echoed Bybee’s statement.

“Sen. Heller has been excellent,” Jones said. “He’s fully engaged and understands the importance of the legislation to Nevada.”

A bill to legalize intrastate online gambling in Delaware passed through the state Senate Wednesday. Now the only thing standing in the way of House Bill 333 becoming law is Gov. Jack Markell, who still needs to sign it. There should be no hangups there, however, as he is a proponent of the bill and could put his name to paper as early as today.

Legislators felt they needed to do something to bolster Delaware’s gambling industry, as it was seen as falling behind its neighbors. New Jersey obviously has Atlantic City and Pennsylvania has been very aggressive lately in developing its gambling venues. CEO of Dover Downs Hotel and Casino Ed Sutor told DelawareOnline-com that his company is losing slots customers to the new Maryland Live! casino in Hanover, Maryland, situated across Chesapeake Bay near the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. “This will go a long way to help us be more competitive,” he said.

Currently, gambling contributes over $250 million in tax revenue to state coffers each year and about 2,500 of the state’s residents are employed by casinos.

HB 333 would legalize all forms of gambling over the internet, which would make Delaware the first state to open its series of tubes to poker, casino games, lottery, and even sports betting. While Nevada recently awarded its first online gaming licenses, those are just for online poker. Casino games and poker will be found on various licensed websites, which will be controlled by the state Lottery Office. Non-casino venues, such as bars and restaurants, will be able to sell Keno tickets and football parlay cards. While 2013 is the target date for overall online gaming, a couple dozen venues are expected to be ready for football betting before the NFL season starts this fall. Lottery tickets will also be sold online.

Gov. Jack Markell has signed a bill authorizing online betting in Delaware and more venues for sports wagering and other gambling.

Markell signed the measure Thursday, less than 24 hours after it narrowly passed the state Senate. The Senate vote was marred by controversy as a Democratic lawmaker who opposed the bill mistakenly voted for it, thinking he was voting for an amendment instead.

Sen. Robert Venables of Laurel had said he may move to rescind Wednesday's vote, but Markell's quick signature of the bill into law may have been intended to moot that possibility.

Clooney and his girlfriend, Stacy Kiebler, were seen boarding a private plane (of course) in the great country of Switzerland with Aniston and her boyfriend, Justin Theroux, and this wouldn’t be a big deal if you didn’t remember that Clooney is extremely good friends with Brad Pitt, Aniston’s ex-husband. This is the first time that Clooney and Aniston have been seen together in public since 2005 when she got divorced from Pitt, so some tabloids say that this is a sign of peace between the Pitt-Aniston factions, although someone should probably ask Mrs. Brad Pitt (in relationship only, not in legal terms), Angelina Jolie, if the peace treaty has been signed.

Of course, this really isn’t a big deal at all unless you’re making it into one. Clooney and Aniston were probably friends while she was married to Pitt and they could have simply been in Switzerland at the same time and saved time by jumping on the same plane. There has been no context for the four getting on the plane but there doesn’t even need to be. Pitt and Aniston were divorced seven years ago, and there were significant others on the plane as well, so there was no funny business (unless there is some sort of swinger’s Mile High Club). Don’t put too much stock into these pictures.

Delaware's legislature on Wednesday passed a law that would legalize a full range of online gambling within Delaware's boundaries. This marks a significant step after the Justice Department's new legal interpretation on Dec. 23,2011. Gambling revenue in Macau last month rose 12% from a year earlier, as the rate of growth in the Chinese territory continued to moderate from the aggressive pace of previous years.

Total revenue in June was 23.33 billion patacas ($2.92 billion), up 12% from MOP20.79 billion in the same month last year, Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau said Monday. The growth rate rebounded from May's 7% year-on-year rise, but was still below analysts' expectations.

In the first six months of the year, revenue rose 20% from the same period in 2011 to MOP148.7 billion.

Rumor has it that Cruise’s beliefs in Scientology pushed Holmes to the edge. She was concerned about their young girl Suri being forced into Scientology as well and she wanted to pull away before it was too late.

Holmes filed for divorce in New York, which could pave the way for her to receive full custody. The State of New York has shown a history to side with the mothers and grant them full custody. Had she opted to file like somewhere in California, she would be less likely to get her wish.

In any case, Cruise is back on the market, which should make plenty of women happy. He’s long been one of the most sought after men in Hollywood and now he’s definitely available. For Holmes, she’s still very much in her prime and should have no problem finding someone to keep her company.

The two sides are hoping for an amicable settlement but we’ll get a feel for how contentious things can get in the coming weeks and months.

Cowell has gone on record and said that The X Factor would have two judges instead of only one, and you may remember back on the first season of American Idol, there were two hosts: Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman. Cowell says that the search has been narrowed down to five people and none have been a professional host before. He also would like to have a male and female take the jobs. It can work, although it’s going to take time for the hosts to build a rapport, but we should find out who the new hosts of The X Factor are soon enough.

Europe’s internal market services commissioner Michel Barnier has warned that some EU countries could face court action over persistent breaches of online gambling rules.

Mr Barnier was speaking at a meeting on Wednesday night during which he also outlined the European Commission’s plans to regulate the sector.


The French official said regulators will work with the industry to formulate a framework that protected consumers while permitting responsible legal gambling. But he said that EU rules must be adhered to and that several countries– he did not name them - would be cautioned about activities in their jurisdiction.

“I will ask my department to contact all the Member States concerned by ongoing cases or complaints in order to remind them of the applicable rules and suggest that any problematic situations are rectified in line with current case law,” he told the meeting.

“If blatant infringements persist, I will not hesitate to propose to my colleagues that the appropriate proceedings be taken or relaunched.”
