KUALA LUMPUR: Gambling syndicates running multimillion-ringgit illegal online operations have raised the stakes in wooing punters. Many of them have changed or tweaked their operations to stay ahead of law enforcement officers, but it’s still not that different from the way they have been operating in the past. The only difference now is the greater emphasis on using mobile devices — making it virtually impossible for the authorities to detect and shut down their operations. The New Straits Times Special Probes Team staked out several illegal online gambling dens in different parts of the country over a week. This was prompted by a clear directive from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi almost as soon as he assumed office on July 28. Zahid had ordered the police to wage an all-out war against the scourge. Last October, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the force would crack down on these syndicates. Khalid had issued a directive to all state police chiefs to mount an operation against the operators. He gave them a week to eradicate the problem once and for all, and a four-hour transfer order awaits them if they failed. From the intelligence gathered by the NST team, by right, many of the chiefs should have been transferred out because illegal online gambling operators are still running the bulk of their operations from physical premises, usually shoplots. Shoplots offer the highest returns since they operate round the clock, seven days a week. Previously, they would operate from the ground floor, but have now moved upstairs. Tontos would screen customers at the entrance.
