U.K.-listed online gambling group PartyGaming said Today that it expects adjusted operating profit for 2008 to rise 28% to at least $143 million.

The firm said profit was helped by the recent moves in exchange rates, though it added revenue in the final quarter was down 18% at $100.4 million as its online poker business, which has closed its doors to U.S. customers, faces "an unlevel playing field" from sites that continue to accept U.S. players. The group said yields and the frequency with which players used the site was affected during the period, but the number of new player sign-ups rose 22% and the number of unique active players rose 8%.

Nonprofessional gamblers can deduct their wagering losses up to the amount of their wagering gains. Although it has been clear that such gamblers cannot simply net their gains and losses over the year, the exact method they should use was never specified. The IRS recently issued a legal memorandum that explains how gambling gains and losses should be calculated for tax purposes.

It seems as though the times are finally changing and, if successfull, Barney Frank's bill may mark the moment when online gambling reaches that next level of respectability that it has long deserved.
