You knew it was only a matter of time before Microsoft’s Xbox 360 came up with its own version of the incredibly popular Wii, and that time is at hand with the new Kinect.

Microsoft hosted a special performance by Cirque du Soleil at the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Sunday night to formally unveil Kinect for Xbox 360. The system, formerly known as Project Natal, is Microsoft's new motion controller similar to the Wii. There are supposedly going to be around 12 games available when Kinect launches later this year.

There has been no official word of a launch date, but you can be sure it will hit before Christmas. Reportedly it will happen in November. As for pricing, the more expensive version will be at $189, or just lower than the Wii. In addition, Microsoft is expected to introduce a slimmer version of the Xbox 360 with 250GB storage and integrated Wi-Fi.

First reviews of the Kinect haven’t been great. Basically it turns the bodies of game players into human console controllers – you are your own avatar in games and it’s hands-free. You put a sensor, like for the Wii, above or below your TV. It also has three cameras plus voice recognition built in, so it knows far away you're standing and how you are moving. Attached to the Xbox 360 game console, the device interprets gestures, such as when players swing their arms to hit a golf ball, lean to steer their way through an obstacle course or swivel their hips through a dance routine. It can also recognize faces and associate them with their profiles.

Sounds interesting to say the least. I'm also sure Nintendo will come out with something new for the Wii as well.

McDermott has authored a bill which would allocate funds generated by taxation of online casinos.

"Regulation and taxation have proven to be better policy for our country when it comes to alcohol," said McDermott over the failed Prohibition experiment. "The same is true for online gambling."

Liquor is easier to tax(tangible). I like his thinking just not sure how he would accomplish it.

The bill was never debated – heck, it was never even read by any of the congressmen who voted for it. Tennessee Republican Bill Frist was courting right wing anti-gaming interests in a last ditch effort to run for president when he attached the UIGEA as a rider to a ‘must pass’ Port Security bill. Frist’s ploy worked, and UIGEA became law, but Frist paid the price for his backhanded maneuver. His presidential run never got off the ground, and he’s no longer in politics today.

If it is cheaper than a wii, then the 360 user would benefit. If I have to purchase a 360 to get it then the wii may be cheaper. I love the wii, but I still have the Playstation 2 and about 200 games, so I will not get rid of it anytime soon. Looking to get a wii, maybe a used one on Ebay. X

Bowing to the effects of the World Series of Poker on the player pool, online poker sites saw traffic take a 1.8 percent decline last week. The majority of the bigger sites shared in the loss, with six of the top ten all seeing drops. Although the poker industry is still up for the year, its six percent annual increase is by far the lowest growth rate ever witnessed.

Since the last few months online gambling legal experts have been predicting that New Jersey would be the first state in America to have regulated online gambling, and that too way before federal regulation. When the bill proposing that Atlantic City land based casinos should be allowed to offer online gambling services (S490) was passed by the State Senate Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee, this prediction gained strength. However, within a week a spanner has been thrown into the works and that too from a completely unexpected source. The Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) has gone on record stating that they do not want the S490 passed.

The Cypriot parliament has postponed a bill that further regulates and controls online gambling on the Mediterranean island. The imminent adjustments to the online gambling laws have gained a lot of media attention on Cyprus. Cyprus Mail, the Cypriot newspaper, reported recently that the government has postponed the legislative proposal. That bill would fully regulate online gambling on Cyprus. The current situation lacks communication between the potential involved parties. The Eurasian island country is considered as one of the leading licensing jurisdictions for online gambling. However, the Cypriot government doesn’t fully regulate online gambling on the Mediterranean island.

(So far, the process has advanced quickly, which offshore regulators didn’t expect. For that reason, the latest postponement in regulating online gambling isn’t surprising. The implementation of legalized online casinos usually takes a while. All required formalities have to be carried out. A country should be completely prepared to offer support services to all new segments and components of a fully regulated online gambling business.)

New Jersey is one of the more liberal states in the US when it comes to their gambling laws. Voter enthusiasm for gambling is expected to be tested, however, in the November election when lawmakers hope to have a question on the ballot regarding online gambling.

This past week, Democratic leaders pushed for a summit to discuss gaming in the state. The summit would include representatives from both the state and the gaming industry, both of whom have differing proposals for how to move forward with sports and online gaming.

Won't do anything for me but hope the good people of New Jersey's representatives can get all parties to come to an agreement and maybe set the path for other states to follow if it looks like a sensible plan. . . :helpme

The passing of Barney Frank's online gambling legislation was expected to be a sure thing, but as the bill gets closer to becoming a law, more land-based casino operators are voicing their opposition. However, one operator is showing its support and has no been shy about it - Harrah's, one of the biggest casino operators in America, has put for a valiant effort to muster up support for Frank's online gambling bill. :thumbsup

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission and the caribbean island nation of Antigua are going to form a partnership. This partnership will begin in September and license holders in Antigua will gain access to the wider bandwidth and tech services offered by Mohawk Internet Technologies, the company that handles online gambling operations on the Kahnawake Indian Reservation.

Antigua has been white listed by the UK Gaming Commission but this partnership will not enable Kahnawake license holders to gain the same standing with the UK gaming regulators. Kahnawake’s online gaming operations have existed for over a decade in Canada, but just recently the Canadian provinces have begun offering government owned online gambling. Kahnawake has over 50 licensees while Antigua currently has only about a dozen.

AUSTRALIAN gamblers lost an average of $1500 each last year, a Productivity Commission report has found.

The long-awaited review of gambling in Australia found 600,000 Australians play the pokies at least weekly and 15 per cent are considered problem gamblers.

Gambling losses reached just over $19 billion in 2008/09 but the social cost of problem gambling is estimated to be at least $4.7 billion a year.

The report said there are an estimated 115,000 problem gamblers in Australia and another 280,000 who are at "moderate risk".

Japan's sumo association has announced it will go ahead with a tournament next month despite allegations of wrestlers and coaches betting tens of thousands of dollars on baseball in a widening scandal that has tarnished the image of the ancient sport.

The Japan Sumo Association decided in an emergency meeting Monday to hold the tournament, but kept the option of suspending more than a dozen wrestlers - or about one-third of the top division - along with another dozen coaches, according to media reports.

One arrest has already been made in the betting scandal and police are considering more criminal action pending the outcome of an investigation into the accusations, which first appeared in the weekly press and allegedly involve gangster middlemen.

The Los Angeles Times reported that cash-strapped state of California's welfare cards can be used in many casino ATMs and in liquor stores.

The Times revealed that more "than half of the state's casinos and gaming rooms, welfare recipients can get cash from state-issued EBT cards."

Now state capitol center Sacramento is reportedly considering action to end this.

The Times writes: "California welfare recipients are able to use state-issued debit cards to withdraw cash on gaming floors in more than half of the casinos in the state... The cards, provided by the Department of Social Services to help recipients feed and clothe their families, work in automated teller machines at 32 of 58 tribal casinos and 47 of 90 state-licensed poker rooms."

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vows to change this.

"We have instructed our vendors to prohibit these cards from being accepted at ATMs located in casinos and card rooms," Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear said Wednesday. "It is reprehensible that anyone would use taxpayer money for anything other than its intended purpose."

McLear said the system of paying out welfare benefits via bank cards was created under Schwarzenegger's predecessor, Democrat Gray Davis. The welfare cards, Electronic Benefit Transfer cards, look like ordinary debit cards. They allow welfare recipients to access cash and food stamps.

The Times reports that Schwarzenegger had threatened to eliminate the state welfare program in his May budget proposal.
