Elvis Presley Hair Sold For $16k

This past Saturday marked an important day in the lives of Elvis fans as a collection of his memorabilia went up for auction including hair from his famous rock ‘n roll coif which sold for $16k. Fans and collectors who took part in Heritage’s Ultimate Elvis Memorabilia Auction at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis helped to raise over $600k while taking home many accessories that characterized “the King’s” image.

In case you’re wondering about the history of these magical locks then you’ll be happy to know that they came from Elvis’s old-time hairdresser, Homer M. Gilleland, who lived in Memphis and managed his tresses for many years and even traveled with him as needed. Apparently Gilleland held on to a lot of his hair throughout the years and kept it stashed away … for a rainy day perhaps or some kind of weird fetish?

According to USA Today, in the end Gilleland handed off much of his hair collection to his old friend Tom Morgan of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department (Memphis) who was also close to Elvis. For those of you not impressed with The King’s hair there were a long list of items on the auction list including Elvis’s white baby grand which is still available and the Graceland purchase agreement which sold for $39k and includes signatures from Elvis Aron Presley. Other items included his famous gold-trimmed sun glasses and his .22 Harrington and Richardson seven-shot revolver which sold for over $12k.
