Record After Eating 181 Wings

Like any other contest of will (or ill), it takes perseverance, mental strength and in this case an empty stomach to become the winner of the ninth annual National Buffalo Wing Festival held in Buffalo, New York every year. After stuffing her face with some of the spiciest, gooiest and messiest wings, Sonya Thomas a.k.a. The Black Widow, became the national champion this past Sunday setting a record of eating 181 Buffalo wings in 12 minutes.

If you were to meet Sonya Thomas, you definitely wouldn’t think of her as an over-eater, weighing only 105 pounds and standing at 5 feet tall, but you shouldn’t underestimate her ability to chow-down, which has helped her rank sixth in the world of competitive eating along with 29 world titles.

Thomas went up against another favorite, Joey Chestnut, America’s number one professional eater, who came in a close second after eating only 169 wings. According to Drew Cerza, the creator of the festival, it was a close race, “They pushed each other really hard, Cerza said. “Joey is so strong. He’s got great jaw strength. But Sonya’s so fast with the hand.”

Thomas’s secret to winning these contests comes with her quick hand-to- mouth action that has helped beat out her much larger and heavier contestants. She also prepares for these contests quite diligently with excessive workouts and her massive one meal a day which may include three large orders of fries, a chicken Whopper, 20 chicken tenders and two 32-ounce diet soft drinks. (BUUUURRRRP!!)

Congratulations to Sonya Thomas whose bottomless pit of a stomach has helped turn her into a celebrity…. I guess. 😄
