Online gamblers and Internet poker players everywhere are celebrating a special event today, as the Republican Party changed its platform. The platform had previously included two sentences that denounced the social ills caused by gambling, and vocalized a stance against online casinos in any form.
The Republican Party saw for the first time the organized will of online gamblers. Not willing to take a chance these disenchanted voters might become one-issue voters and switch to the other side, Republican platform framers struck the offensive language.
Although the party is still a long way from recognizing that legalization and regulation are the best methods for achieving the goals of both sides, a big step was taken in acknowledging that Republican constituents largely favor online betting. With continued pressure applied by the people, hopefully the next breakthrough will not take so long.
