Backgammon is a game that has been around for millennia. Traditionally associated with smoky coffee bars, the game of backgammon has a wide range of fans ranging from young children learning the game to old grizzled veterans.

Backgammon is particularly popular in European countries like Greece where it is called Tabli or ταβλι in Greek characters and Turkey where it is known as Tavla. Other regions where the game is incredibly popular and embedded into the psyche of people are the Arab countries and most of North Africa.

The rise of online backgammon has helped to fuel the popularity and growth of backgammon. Players can now play backgammon for real money or if you just want a social game to work on your strategy you can find that as well.

Backgammon is a skill game and one that requires a degree of luck and astute forward thinking. Its popularity is down to it being a very simple game to play. That simplicity does however conceal a game that requires a good bit of strategy to get the better of the other person playing.

In fact, one of the first books of that era, The Backgammon Book by Jacoby and Crawford was one of the best. It clearly and concisely laid out how to play as well .

In the short run, just about anyone can beat anyone given enough luck, and when you have dice, you have luck.

Obviously, we agree completely. If backgammon were strictly a game of chance, players would only be expected to win on average just half of their games. Yet stronger players consistently win games against "beginners". There is so much more to backgammon than just rolling the dice and mindlessly racing your men around the board .......!!
