Andreas Maertens, a 33-year-old German, was crowned as the 2007 backgammon champion and pocketed over $600,000 for his efforts. Maertens is a competitive player in both poker and backgammon. He is a regular on the poker tournament circuit, and won the 1996 German Backgammon Open.

Andreas Maertens qualified for the world’s richest backgammon tournament online, and beat out 36-year-old Danish backgammon ace Lasse Hjorth Madsen in a thrilling finale. Madsen pocketed over $144,000 for his runner-up finish.

Wow I wouldn't mind even the runner up prize! Just goes to show that competition players can adapt quite easily between games. They really seem to have diversed between games they take seriously to increase their chances of winning.

Wow I wonder how backgammon players feel about that. Wonder whether they will be looking for some kind of revenge in Poker tournements?
