Over the past few years, one of the most popular forms of television programming has been that of reality shows. This genre – especially those that feature some form of competition between its featured players – are popular with television viewers because of the “regular Joe” participants and popular with networks because of their low cost overheads for production. If it is picked up, a new show will focus on the world of poker with one of its more popular female players.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a Canadian director has created a reality program called Living The Life. Director Josh Kimmel created the premise of the series and is directing the two-part pilot that he is shopping around to potential suitors. The premise of the program is simple: two players travel the world competing against each other not only on the poker tables but also in various tests. Kimmel has found his first two competitors, one of them a familiar face to the poker world and both very familiar to reality show junkies.

The Road to 100 Billion is a long-running cash game promotion on the world's largest online poker site. PokerStars is giving away free cash to players who are dealt into milestone hands, and over $1,000,000 has been awarded in the run up to the 85 billionth hand.

Cash prizes are being paid to players who are sitting at the table where every millionth hand is dealt from hand 84,700,000,000 right up to 85,000,000,000. To be in with a chance of walking away with free cash, all you have to do is play real money cash games and hope you are dealt into a milestone hand.

Please note Zoom tables are not eligible for milestone hand prizes. Only play on regular cash tables will be eligible for a milestone prize.

Players will be awarded a cash prize of $60 for every VIP Player Point (VPP) they earned in the last 50 hands played at their table, including the milestone hand itself. Players also receive a base prize of $20. This means the more you play, the better your potential rewards. The formula used to award the cash prizes is as follows:

Dealt into Milestone Hand: (# of VPPs in last 50 hands x $60) +$20 = Cash prize
Win Milestone Hand: (# of VPPs in last 50 hands x $60+$20) x 2 = Cash Prize

In order to see what you could win let's have a look at an example. If you are playing on a table that one of the milestone hands is dealt at and have earned 31 VPPs in the last 50 hands and everyone goes all in but you lose the hand then you would win $1,880 (31 * $60 + $20) but if you win the hand in the example you would win $3,760.

The world of fiction writing sometimes comes very close to a true story more often than one would think and then sometimes it’s just pure fantasy It is a good thing people still write about gambling and create true to life stories that bring home a message that ring true in many reader’s hearts.

Such is the case of author Ben Mezrich who has written a few books on gambling has brought to life characters and plots that intrigue and mystify. Mezrich wrote Busting Vegas, Bringing Down the House and Accidental Billionaires, and is planning the launch of his newest book the Boys From Absolute Poker.

A recent interview on CNBC Mr. Mezrich explained the jist of the book, “I’m working on a big new book for next summer about a bunch of college kids who launched the online poker world out of a dorm room essentially. They’re brilliant kids who built an empire in a way, and now they’re being persecuted, in hiding in Antigua, because they did something to me that was very American. It’s an intersection of ‘21’ and the Social Network” Wondering about the reasoning behind the writing of the book Bill Beatty from Calvin Ayre-com said he had heard from his industry insiders that the book was backed by the owners of a failed internet gambling firm. Sounds logical but it still is an interesting story line what with today’s growing interest in everything to do with business and the internet.

With South Point Poker set to receive formal approval from Nevada gaming officials Thursday, real-money online poker in the U.S. is only two months away.

The Nevada Gaming Commission’s (NGC) agenda for August 23 includes considering the matter of formally approving a license for South Point Poker to become an operator of an online poker site–the first in the state and the country. Actually, South Point has applied to be licensed in three separate categories–operator, manufacturer and service provider. Three companies–Bally Technologies, International Game Technology and Shuffle Master–have been approved in the manufacturing category.

Should South Point get rubber-stamped on Thursday–and all indications are that they will–its feasible that real-money online poker can commence in beta testing phase as early as October. This would allow South Point Hotel Casino and Spa to get a jump on the big boys such as MGM Grand and Caesar’s Entertainment.

To be an Olympic athlete is a regime of rigorous training and work. It requires the participant to be extra strong under the pressure of competing with the world’s best athletes under the scrutiny of the officials. To win any Olympic event is an achievement in itself but to win many gold medals takes an extraordinary effort.

When training for Olympic swimming Michael Phelps is as hard on himself as can be and it appears that he is playing just as hard at poker. This Olympian has won 22 Medals at Swimming events over his career and will no doubt go down in history as the greatest to ever grace the games.

The gossip columns are full of Michael Phelps and his spending habits that are currently focused on playing cards with some friends once a week for reasonable $25,000 buy-ins. Micael Phelps has endorsement contracts and opportunities that he has invested in worth a considerable amount. It is almost a certainty that this young athlete has his head straight and maybe sees the massive appeal that playing poker has. There are worse case scenarios being played out in the world of sports.

Since 2009, the identifier Isildur1 attracted a lot the attention of everyone in the world of online poker. Having participated in the biggest high stakes tournaments since the last months of 2009, this player managed to keep his identity in the strict anonymity for over a year. It’s only one month after the signature of his contract (for a sum alleged having 7 digits) with PokerStars in December 2010 that the mystery of his identity has been unveiled. The public knew from this moment that Isildur1 was hiding a young Swede named Viktor Blom. He played against great online poker players and participated in high-level and difficult tournaments. His talent captivated the poker world.

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that poker is more a game of skill than chance and cannot be prosecuted under a law created to stop organized crime families from making millions of dollars from gambling.

The decision by Judge Jack Weinstein in Brooklyn was embraced by advocates of card games pushing to legalize Internet poker in the United States. The judge relied extensively on the findings of a defense expert who analyzed online poker games.

The ruling tossed out a jury's July conviction of a man charged with conspiring to operate an illegal underground poker club, a business featuring Texas Hold'em games run in a warehouse where he also sold electric bicycles. There were no allegations in the case that organized crime was involved or that anything such as money laundering or loansharking occurred.

"Because the poker played on the defendant's premises is not predominately a game of chance, it is not gambling" as defined in the federal law, the judge wrote in a lengthy decision that traced the history of poker and federal laws to combat illegal gambling.

Prosecutors did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Three academics from the Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Holland have published the first draft of a paper entitled Beyond Chance? The Persistence of Performance in Online Poker.

PhD candidates Rogier J.D. Potter van Loon and Dennie van Dolder and Associate Professor of Finance Martijn J. van den Assem have analysed 415.9 million player-hands, purchased from HHDealer between October 2009 and September 2010 across three different stakes levels in cash games – low, medium and high,

They concluded that,“Our results suggest that skill is an important factor in online poker,” according to van den Assem.

He added that the study was designed to, “…inform the current worldwide debate about the legality of poker and the appropriate taxation of winnings.”

The trio have now submitted the paper to an esteemed academic journal where it will be reviewed in a double-blind process (which could take several years) before, they hope, being published in that journal. The authors’ say comments on the draft are highly appreciated.

The report is 36 pages long, divided into four sections – data and descriptive statistics, decile analyses, regression analyses, discussion and conclusions – and features over 50 references dating back as far as 1944

Back in 2002, Trishelle Cannatella was part of The Real World: Las Vegas, becoming a bit of a star and appearing on Road Rules before dating professional wrestlers and posing for Playboy. She's since appeared in movies such as Ninja Cheerleaders and on TV programs you've actually heard of, like Criminal Minds. Somehow along the way she's also become a semi-pro poker player and is teaming up with former Miss USA competitor Amanda Kimmel to play the game in tournaments around the world in a new reality program called Living The Life.

Living The Life was created by Josh Kimmel and the concept is as simple as they come: cameras follow two players around the world as they compete against each other in poker tournaments and various tests of skill and strength. A sort of The Amazing Race meets Poker After Dark. Cannatella may have a bit of an advantage here: she was a sponsored poker player who made it to the final table at the World Poker Tour's WPT Invitational back in 2010. That said, Kimmel is definitely a Reality Show veteran who may be able to bring it when it comes to the non-poker elements of the show.

Kimmel competed in Survivor: China in 2007, finishing third and came in second in Survivor: Micronesia the next year. Her third attempt in Survivor: Heroes vs Villains ended with her getting bumped off relatively early, in 9th place, but her attitude towards competitive reality programming hasn't dimmed a bit.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, creator Kimmel said "They’re both extremely competitive and they don’t like to lose. If they lose and they go up to their hotel room and smash the TV set, that’s interesting to me."

The show is currently filming at the EPT stop in Barcelona and there are plans to shoot in Los Angeles and Las Vegas in the next couple of months. It's not been picked up by any network yet, but it is being shopped aggressively by Kimmel's production company.

Manne wrote: Zynga Inc. has started to lobby for real-money Internet gambling. It is doing so in Washington, D.C. and California, according to the Wall Street Journal.

However, bills in both places are huge long shots at the present time. Some industry insiders say a national online poker measure is perpetually drawing dead. California is set to flunk again amidst years of trying, but most think some compromise will eventually be brokered in the Golden State.

Opponents of California’s web poker proposal that’s currently on the table say that it would let outside interests take advantage of the state. Zynga is based in San Fransisco.

Most Internet gaming companies prefer a federal regime, but are hedging their bets on the viability of a state-by-state patchwork. Nevada has legalized and is on the verge of such an industry, but Zynga has not applied there, although it seems likely it will do so eventually.

Manne wrote: When the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was signed into law almost five years ago, it was believed that the online gambling industry was destined to quickly fade out in the United States. Despite several years of government efforts to prosecute operators and payment processors, online poker and casino gambling continues to thrive in the US.

Leading online poker reviewer PokerSites-com announced that while US-based traffic rapidly declined in the wake of Black Friday, there has been a steady increase in US-based viewers at their site over the last six months.

"We are seeing more and more people realizing that online gambling is here to stay and are more comfortable accessing online poker now that that US states are legislating to clear up any gray areas," Robert Stern, Communications Director at PokerSites-com said. "PokerSites-com has been online since 1995 and we have carefully watched the fluctuations and trends of online gambling -- and online poker in particular -- to always provide players with the latest legal information and to ensure that they always have access to an impartial resource on where the best poker sites are."

In fact, millions of Americans are still gambling online and are spending upwards of $4 billion a year on the sites that will still accept them. Internationally, Internet gambling accounted for $32.8 billion in revenue in 2011.

Many lawmakers in Washington and a few states are eager to approve Internet gambling. But to make it politically palatable, they are first pushing only for online poker. Why that card game and not, say, blackjack? Because, they claim, poker is mainly a game of skill. Their argument received a boost Tuesday in a ruling by Brooklyn federal Judge Jack Weinstein. In overturning a conviction of a man who ran a poker den in a Staten Island warehouse, he found that poker is not a game of chance under the 1970 Illegal Gambling Businesses Act.

MONITOR'S VIEW: Legalize betting for online poker?

The decision needs to be appealed to higher courts as it is could easily be overturned. It argues against poker as a game of chance but then finds that states can still outlaw it as a form of gambling, as many do. It approves of sports betting – which often relies on skilled knowledge of players or teams – even though that is outlawed under federal law.

During tomorrow’s hearing by Nevada’s five-member Gaming Commission, South Point Hotel and Casino (South Point Poker LLC) will receive a license to operate web poker. The approval is unique because the casino isn’t relying on a third-party firm to run its games.

In other words, it’s going to be conducting online poker in-house. But, this doesn’t mean that it won’t engage in business-to-business activity within the web poker industry.

In the official regulatory language, South Point will snag licensure as an operator, manufacturer and service provider of “interactive gaming” — the state’s fancy way of saying online gambling.

The three-member Gaming Control Board approved South Point earlier this month on condition that before commencing real-money games the company must submit proof of establishing an online poker reserve to guarantee the safety of player funds.

In other words, regulators want zero chance of a Full Tilt Poker player-deposit fiasco.
