The 2009 World Series of Poker kicked off with Event #1 ($500 Casino Employees No Limit Hold’em) and 867 dealers, floorpeople and even bartenders put up $500 for a chance at the first bracelet of the Series. This year’s field generated a prize-pool of $389,700 with first-place to receive $83,778. This was just shy of last year’s 930-player field, which generated a $418,500 prize-pool.

Twenty years after winning his first World Series of Poker bracelet, Phil Helmuth is looking to make a mark in poker history again.

The Poker Brat, along with 19 of the best players in the world - including world champions Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan and Peter Eastgate - have put together their own start up stories into a 285-page book set to release in late June, during the 40th Annual WSOP. Hellmuth spoke about his publishing company’s new book *Deal Me In* to a small group of reporters Wednesday morning.

That’s a tall order for even the great Scotty Nguyen, but there are a few more 10K events and a special 40K anniversary event made for high rollers like Scotty. He won’t necessarily need to win a bracelet to accomplish this feat, but it will make it a lot easier if he does.

He’s been one of the best players over the last year, winning over a million dollars in multi-table tournaments since his $1.9 million cash in the H.O.R.S.E. event championship last July. And we know he’s going to play a busy schedule of events as he tries to compile $4 million in a month and a half. Win a seat to the WSOP with Bodog Poker now.

Manne wrote: In states such as Florida, where poker is already legal, Internet poker players would still benefit from increased gambling options. If the federal government deems poker a skill game, it would be exempt from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that passed Congress in 2006.

The law cast a cloud over the legality of Internet gaming, and prompted some websites to no longer accept U.S. players.

Poker advocates now feel their skill message is gaining steam. The Florida Legislature this month approved higher-stakes poker at the state's Indian casinos and parimutuels. During the legislative session, skill was mentioned as one reason lawmakers should allow higher stakes - with the idea that more chips in players' hands allow for skill to play a larger role.

The state must still reach a final gambling deal with the Seminole Tribe before the new poker rules take effect.

At the final table of the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha, crowd and media fave Jason Mercier eventually won out over opponent Steve Burkholder. The top prize of $237,415 pushes Mericer over the $3 million in career tournament winnings since he burst onto the scene last year after winning the EPT San Remo. This is his first WSOP bracelet and most likely not his last.

After facing one of the largest poker tournament fields in history in the $1,000 No Limit Holdem Stimulus Special, Steve Sung was able to face down his heads-up opponent in a knock down drag out duel to take home the $771,106 first place prize and his first WSOP bracelet in his fifth WSOP final table. The win puts him at almost $3 million in career earnings over a very short time.

Stay tuned for more 2009 WSOP updates over the next few weeks and make sure to qualify online for the 2009 WSOP through Bodog Poker and win a $12,000 WSOP prize package.

Set this up as pole and you will find many disagrree with you.
In many cases it is more like a lottery.
People do gamble on hitting lucky chance cards.

All gambling is people thinking they can beat the odds on an unknown outcome, by applying some considered skill.

Well... I played one of those $2000 Reload Freerolls on PokerStars! It's their new promo out now. Second one I entered(got donked out last night). I managed to finish 301st out of 8,816 entrants and win $1, but more importantly... that qualified me to enter one of the 5 $20,000 Finals on Sunday June 28th! Hope to qualify for all 5 of em, but don't know if I'll have time to enter enough of them to make all 5.. but we'll see. I won't know how many entrants there will be in the finals until they come up.

These 2k Reload Freerolls have a quick blind structure. The blinds are 5 mins! That qualifies it as a turbo structure. You still need patience, but you are going to have to win some chips to be able to make it ITM and qualify. I got it up to 16k at one point with a lot of time to go. I was 321st position out of 676 left... went into the stall mode and squeaked it out ok...LOL! I just want to qualify in these.. although there is good cash potential in these 2k's for sure. After I get qualified for all 5 20k finals.. I'll then try to see if I can win one or at least make a final table. It will be a challenge to do that with 5 minute blinds, but I'm going to see if I am able to play very many of these in the next 2 and half weeks and hopefully... I can make some cash out of this promo!

Good luck to all who give this a shot! May the flops be with you all! (with 5 minute blinds... you'll need it lol!)

Email from PokerStars:
