Manne wrote: PHIL IVEY, the world's most famous gambler, wins and loses amounts of money that represent salaries, mortgages and superannuation payouts for most Australians.

The 34-year-old American is competing in the Aussie Millions poker tournament at Melbourne's Crown Casino but he says it's not the tournament or its million-dollar-plus main event first prize that has enticed him to Australia, but ''the action'' around the tournament. Ivey is also keen to check out, for the first time, Sydney's Star City casino.

Known as the Tiger Woods of poker - although he thinks a comparison with the disgraced golfer is no longer relevant - Ivey is acknowledged as the best player at all three aspects of the poker - online, tournament and cash games.

''In the past that was three different people, but over the last few years the best player was just Phil Ivey, and there isn't even an argument, and that's really unusual in a game like poker,'' said Chris Ferguson, another US player in Australia for the tournament.

''It doesn't matter what the game is, Phil's the best,'' said Howard Lederer, a poker pro who has a side bet with Ivey on whether the champ will win another World Series of Poker in the next two years. The bet is rumoured to be $US5 million.

The Aussie Millions is Australia's richest poker tournament, but the organised games are often a sideshow for poker pros playing private cash games and taking side bets.

Ivey started playing card games at his grandfather's house in New Jersey as a child before moving as a teenager to Atlantic City - and spending 10 to 12 hours a day playing poker, courtesy of a fake ID. He later honed his skills at a regular seven-card stud game hosted by the Hustler publisher Larry Flynt.

In 2002, Ivey won three World Series of Poker bracelets, a feat not bettered, establishing himself as the world's best player.

He is best known for his freakish ability to ''read'' other players' cards, but his gambling isn't limited to poker. Along with table games such as craps and baccarat, he also bets heavily on sports results and golf. When asked about the most obscure thing he has bet on, Ivey nominated the speed at which two ice cubes would melt.

''I enjoy myself when I'm betting, life's just more fun that way,'' said Ivey.

His net worth is a popular internet topic, but the softly spoken American doesn't like to talk about specific amounts as people ''can't relate to it and to talk about it seem crass''. However, the poker reference site highstakesdb.com says Ivey has made more than $US18 million in online games since the site started in 2007.

The Aussie Millions runs until Sunday.
Hes not my favorite player but you have to give respect for him and his game. 18 mil. huh ? heck im happy winning the usual .18 in a freeroll, lol.

For those who struggle with alcoholism, sobriety can be difficult, to say the very least. It's an emotional roller-coaster where many feel constantly under pressure and for Emmett Peters, a 57-year-old poker player from Halifax, an innocent mistake triggered an unfortunate, if understandable reaction. Peters had been sober since he was in his early 30s after a long bout with alcohol after the death of his father when he was just 13 years old when a waitress accidentally served him a beer instead of ginger ale while he was at the tables at Casino Nova Scotia.

He sipped the beverage without looking and realized it was beer, and decades of hard work were down the drain. He told the CBC News: "I was crying. I mean, I felt tainted."

Peters's reaction was explosive, to say the least. He smashed the glass and stormed out of the casino, shocking players and staff alike and he's now suspended for three months because of the incident. However, Casino Nova Scotia is learning a lesson and is ordering staff to ensure that they don't serve alcohol to those who have not ordered it.

"It was like going back to the first time I quit drinking. I felt like I lost my sobriety, I guess. It really shook me up. It took me a week to get back to normal," Peters added.

He's not yet sure if he is going to return to Casino Nova Scotia once the three-month ban is lifted.

Yes, the Oscar nominations got announced today and a member of the illustrious Fantastic Four has been murdered in their comic, but let's talk about what's important: the World Series of Poker schedule, which has just been announced. The 42nd annual WSOP, open to anyone 21 years of age or older, kicks off on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and this year, 58 bracelets (one more than 2010) will be up for contention, and the first event is a brand-new one: an ultra high-stakes, limited-enrollment $25,000 heads-up No Limit Hold "em championship, open to a maximum of 256 players.

"Something for everyone is the best way to describe the 2011 World Series of Poker schedule," said WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel, who will oversee the event for the sixth consecutive year. "It’s staggering to think that last year alone the WSOP hosted nine of the 17 largest tournaments in poker history. We had 44 events produce more than a $1 million prize pool, so we can’t wait to get at it again and offer players at all levels the best poker action on the planet."

While everyone loves the tournaments that are played throughout the WSOP and how they give something for every player, the $10,000 No Limit Hold 'Em Championship that is dubbed "The Main Event" is where everyone's attention is focused. That starts on Thursday, July 7 and features four starting flights on the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. Play will continue until the final table is reached on July 19th.

With the World Series of Poker's summer event schedule being announced yesterday, we completely neglected to check in with the 808 players who sat down to play in the main event at the WSOP Circuit stop at the Choctaw Resort and Casino in Oklahoma. After the first day of play, 174 players were left and only 81 of them were going to be in the money and day two saw another 160 of them eliminated. Only two hours into day three and the final table was set: Jeff Gibralter; Victor Haynes; Drazen Ilich; Andrew Watson; Charles “Woody” Moore; Bobby “Shooter” Hempkins; Huy Nguyen; Traci Brown ; Robert “RCW” Cheung and Shallum Lynch.

How'd they finish? Tenth place and $17,662 went to Charles "Woody" Moore; Robert "RCW" Cheung came in ninth and walked away with $21,979; Andrew Watson earned eighth place and $27,680; Victor Haynes took seventh, earning $35,290 and he was soon joined on the sidelines by Drazen Ilich (whose name just smacks of being a James Bond villain) at sixth with $45,552 added to her bankroll. Bobby "Shooter" Hempkins was kicked to the curb by Shallum Lynch's KK but earned $59,537 for his fifth place finish. Jeff Gibralter earned fourth place and got $78,828. Shallum Lynch cracked the $100,000 barrier with his $105,764 payout for third place. Traci Brown from Austin, TX got to claim the second place prize of $143,462 and earned the Choctaw WSOP Circuit Casino Championship at the same time, getting an automatic seat for the WSOPC National Championship. Huy Nguyen, a 25-year old online poker pro from Norman, OK was crowned the chapmion and earned $232,706 as well as a circuit ring and an automatic seat at the WSOP Circuit National Championship.

It may not involve Nicolas Cage clutching to a bottle as he drags Elisabeth Shue down with him, but the internet is abuzz with some frank talk from pros about high stakes poker games and Las Vegas. This came after the cash game-loving' Malaysian businessmen that had players like Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, John Juanda traveling to Macau to play against them made their big TV debut in Australia, not in Vegas. Throw in the fact that Doyle Brunson claims that he's contemplating a move to California since Las Vegas has become an undesirable place to live and play as a pro with high-limit games scarce on the ground.

Phil Ivey added fuel to the fire when talking to an online poker site: "Once Chip Reese died it was pretty much over," he said. "He was pretty much the backbone of the high-stakes games and now, there's really no big game (in Las Vegas) anymore, except for during the World Series or when a tournament is in town or something like that.

"So yeah, there's no real reason to be there."

Ivey went on to back up Doyle's idea of California as the new place to play in medium and high stakes games.

"Wherever it's at is where I'll be," he mused. "I guess there's always going to be a time for change, and I don't know what lies ahead in the future. We'll have to see."

ONE Retford man's poker face has banked him a cool 1.5 million Australian dollars in the world's largest poker tournament.

Sam Trickett, 24, claimed victory in the Aussie Millions 100k Challenge in Melbourne over the weekend, walking away with $1,525,000 (£958,210).

Sam, who has so far racked up an incredible $3 million from his five-year poker career, said the key to his success was reacting well to the cards dealt, rather than having a set strategy.

"It was tough, the best players in the world were playing there, so it was a tough tournament to win," he said.

"I don't have a set style of play, I play every hand as it comes.

"I just try to make the right decision at the right time and just take each hand as it comes."

The strategy has seen him defeat 37 of the world's best poker players in the tournament and shoot up the world rankings.

As a result, he now ranks fourth on poker database The Hendon Mob's 2011 Money List, making him the highest ranking English player.

To even take part in the Aussie Millions, players have to put up a hefty $100k buy-in.

In Sam's case, his sponsor, Titan Poker, paid this cost for him and spared him from dipping into his previous hard- won cash.

In return, the company gets free publicity by appearing on Sam's clothing at tournaments and matches, while Sam himself walks away with all his winnings intact.

The career is markedly different from the direction Sam was taking as a semi- professional football player six years ago.

Despite getting a trial with Nottingham Forest, he was later forced to retire after damaging his cruciate ligament - it was then that he discovered the world of poker.

It's a lifestyle which could be seen as high-risk, and which initially caused concern for Sam's parents - but their concerns eased after seeing his success in games across the world.

"At first they weren't too keen, but after seeing how I've done, they're happy now," he said.

"I'm doing really well so they're happy to see that I'm enjoying life."

After building on his success on the international poker circuit, Sam recently moved out of Retford and headed for London - but has since found himself spending a lot of time on the move.

The poker champion now has his sights set on the 2011 World Series in May, which requires a much more

The state of Florida has been one of the most aggressive in the nation over the past several years when it comes to gambling expansion. Now, lawmakers appear ready to push the envelope even further by regulating online poker.

Earlier this month, legislators in New Jersey passed legislation that would legalize online casinos in the state. The Atlantic City casinos would operate the online sites, with the revenue being split between the casinos and the state government.

Florida is looking into several different forms of gambling expansion. Las Vegas gaming companies have been lobbying to bring Vegas-style casino resorts to South Beach and other tourist destinations in Florida. Governor Rick Scott has already met with Las Vegas Sands owner Sheldon Adelson after Scott won the mid-term election back in November.

The plan being discussed for online poker would allow pari-mutuel facilities to offer the online gaming through a third party website. The pari-mutuel would receive a cut of each hand of poker that is played, and the state would then collect a ten percent tax on the rake.

In all, up to three poker sites would be used as central locations for the twenty-three pari-mutuels in the state. Many lawmakers are on board with the idea, and if passed, July 1st would be the day the law would take affect.

Opponents of the legislation are more against gambling expansion than this particular bill. Representative Dennis Baxley is hoping the state can find other ways to generate income, but the online poker plan appears to be on the top of that list.

If New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signs the legislation passed by lawmakers, the state would become the first in the US to regulate online poker. California lawmakers are also discussing a bill that would regulate the industry. All of these states would have restrictions stipulating that only residents of their particular state could bet online.

The World Poker Tour's Southern Poker Championship has been raging for the past few days and while the first two days were pretty typical, day 3 was a rager. It started with 66 players left playing at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi and a mere 19 walking away after the devastating play that went down. Day 4 led to the final table and as it stands, that 6-seat finale will kick off at 4pm Central today.

Right now, Alexander Kuzmin is at the top of the chip counts with 1,969,000 in front of him. Allen Carter is right on his heels, however, holding 1,928,000. The gap between Kuzmin and Carter and the rest of the pack, however, is worth discussing: Ryan Hughes has 840,000 in chips, Leif Force has 674,000, Shannon Shorr has 663,000 and Pat Mahoney has 394,000. Is there any way for the bottom four to compete against the two juggernauts or are the two top spots already determined? We'll check in tomorrow and let you know!

The Aussie Millions is a high-stakes tournament like no other: a massive $250,000 entrance fee makes it the largest buy-in tournament in the history of poker and victory at it can completely reshape a poker player's career, as Eric Seidel just found out when he took home $2,500,00 after beating a field of 20 players willing to put up the massive buy-in for their shot at a payout that large. Yes, the field was relatively small (as anything with a buy-in that big would be) but every player was a name: Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, John Juanda, Chris Ferguson and Sam Trickett were all part of the pack who ponied up for the event.

In fact, it was Trickett that Seidel found himself facing down in the heads-up competition with a sizable disadvantage: a 5-to-1 chip deficit. "It didn’t look good and it didn’t feel good," Seidel told an online poker news site. "I thought well, I’m obviously not laying down. I’ll sit and play and hope things go well and then they did."

Seidel's victory and payday means that he's now earned $13,788,227 playing poker, firmly establishing his place in the poker pantheon.

With the increasing number of online poker sites available on the internet, operators must always stay one step ahead. There’s little opportunity for slip-ups and online poker webmasters must ensure that their software provides only the best user experience.

That’s why BoDog has revamped its online poker website, providing players with a more streamlined experience for easier and more efficient access to their favourite games. The operator spent a great deal of time going through player feedback in order to find out exactly what would improve the player experience.

As part of the overhaul, BoDog Poker players will be able to access the home screen immediately upon logging in. Normally, players are required to wait several minutes as they are connected to the server, but BoDog places players in the middle of the action right away. There is also a new live stream that allows players to see information about promotions and bonuses as it becomes available.

The player is the main focus of the new website design, as they can set their own notifications to keep themselves updated with reminders for the events that they’re interested in. There is also an improved sorting function for the games, so players can quickly find the exact game that suits their poker-player interests and tastes.

Though New Jersey is poised to become the first state in the United States to legalize intrastate online poker, they are unlikely to be the last. Several states have been considering such legislation, and now Florida can be added to that list.

According to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, legislators in the state are considering allowing horse tracks, dog tracks and jai-alai frontons to run online poker rooms, as long as those organizations would share some of their revenues with the state. As with similar proposals in New Jersey and California, the main motivating factor for this legislation appears to be efforts to help raise more revenue for the state.

“It’s common sense,” State Representative Joseph Abruzzo, who first proposed this legislation, told the Sun-Sentinel. “There are hundreds of thousands of players in Florida in unregulated and unprotected offshore sites. Why not legalize, regulate, and bring in revenue from something that’s already occurring?”

As has become typical in the discussion surrounding online poker bills, the proposed legislation has both supporters and detractors. Many players inside the state are in favor of the bill, as are state officials, who fear that a national-level bill would provide them with far less revenue than an intrastate scheme. Major poker sites are against the bill, due to the fact that they’d almost certainly be shut out of the market, while others simply want to wait for a federal bill to pass rather than be forced to play in a limited, Florida-only poker environment.

If the bill were to pass, it could take effect as early as July 1, 2011. The bill would allow up to three poker sites to operate in the state, with all 23 pari-mutuel card rooms in the state using their websites as portals from which to access these sites. The card rooms would take in most of the revenue from the rake, but 10% of that revenue would be given to the state – the same percentage the state takes out of the rake collected in live card rooms.

The Senate Committee on Regulated Industries has said that online poker could generate as much as $56 million in additional revenue for the state by 2014. Live card rooms, benefitting from expanded gambling laws that have allowed a wider range of poker games, are expected to generate about $12 million in their first fiscal year.

How do you celebrate winning a whopping $2 million in the wold's second-richest poker tournament?

If you're Malvern grandfather David Gorr, you get a good night's sleep, head into work the next day and enjoy a nice celebratory lunch of ... fruit?

"I brought fruit in today. I eat fruit every day," said the sensible 68-year-old winner of the Crown Aussie Millions.
Advertisement: Story continues below

"What else was I going to do today?"

Despite his newfound millions, Mr Gorr said he did not for a moment consider calling in sick to CGU Insurance in Melbourne, where he has worked as a computer analyst-programmer for the past 15 years.

As he walked into his office on William Street clutching his trophy, about 60 of his workmates stopped and clapped him to his desk.

They also asked for a peek at his diamond-encrusted gold bracelet, part of the jackpot he received for defeating a field of 721 competitors.

"Someone else here put [the bracelet] on and had a photograph taken, and the others have been holding it, and I've probably had five or six photos taken here at work," he said.

"All the groupies are after me now."

Yesterday it was young British player James Keys who was after him, his final opponent in the Crown Casino tournament which pitted a field of professional poker players from Australia and around the world against each other.

"When the cards that I had were exposed together with the cards of my opponent, James, he was in front. He had the better hand than me," Mr Gorr said.

It wasn't until the final card was dealt that Mr Gorr eclipsed his opponent with a pair of kings and fours.

It was a long way from his first exposure to poker in the 1940s when, as a five-year-old, his parents organised charity fund-raiser poker tournaments.

"Small amounts of money, and we're talking threepences and sixpences, which of course was a decent amount of money back in the 40s, small amounts were taken off and given to the charity. So I was exposed to poker from a very young age," he said.

Mr Gorr said was financially established, so most of the prize money would go towards helping out his two children and five grandchildren.

He will shun the high life and continue to work, but may splurge on several overseas trips to compete in international poker tournaments.

"But I would not let it control my life. I'm happy the way I am, really," he said.

"An extra few tournaments would give me a lot of joy because I love playing poker."

The state of Florida could see a legalized and regulated online poker infrastructure by as early as July, 2011. According to reports, Florida is investigating a number of ways to expand its gambling market, one of them being the use of pari-mutuel facilities to offer online poker games through a third party website. This option would offer the gambling facility a cut of each of the poker hands played, while the state would earn through taxes paid on each rake.

Legislators are said to be eagerly backing the idea in a bid to fill empty state coffers, and, if all goes according plan, Florida’s poker players could enjoy online poker in the state. According to Rep. Joseph Abruzzo (D-Wellington), the politician who proposed the bill, there is a lot of logic behind the idea.

“It’s common sense,” he said. “There are hundreds of thousands of players in Florida in unregulated and unprotected offshore sites.”

“Why not legalize, regulate and bring in revenue from something that’s already occurring?” he asked.

Florida is not the first state to consider legalizing and regulating online poker. Legislative branches in New Jersey have already approved online gambling, and the bill was placed before the governor earlier this month. California is also pushing towards a similar bill.

There is strong opposition to recent ideas to turn Florida into what anti-gambling groups call a “destination casino resort”. They argue that while big groups such as Las Vegas Sands Corp and Wynn Casino tout job creation and economic development as a good reason to expand gambling in the state, there are actually better ways to fight Florida’s $3.6 billion deficit.
