Mike "The Mouth" Matusow earned his nickname fair and square, with opinions that refuse to stay in his brain and theatrics that would shame the hammiest William Shatner impersonator. However, insulting the whole of a state's poker-playing populace is a new one, even for him, and he managed to do that this weekend. He's in Pompano Beach in South Florida this weekend, running one of his Deepstack Live seminars. Deepstack Live is a learning session that teaches strategy for specific situations and enforces learning centered around aspects of the game like pot odds for a mere $495 per player who's interested.
What did Matusow say that's gotten the hackles up on so many Sunshine staters? He told Nick Sortal of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that "In Florida, you’re dealing with a lot of raw players, and they’re terrible," with too many of them playing ace-jack or ace-ten and the like.
Recently changed laws in the state mean that there's no limit to buy-ins at the state's poker tables and there's a lot of new fish in the water for a pro, so the sentiment can be understood, but it still seems to be over the top to dismiss an entire state's populace, even if it comes from from the man whose lack of self-awareness allowed him to tell one interviewer "I think I'm probably the most well-liked person on the tour, I think most people love me."
Matusow also appeared on this weekend's bachelor edition of Poker After Dark.
