I'm in the process of reading couple of poker books that look more into the mental side of the game (I m having probs with myself) and one of the questions posed in one of the books was "Why do you play poker" and I was just curious as to what you good folks would say to this question.

For me its the money, competition and social side (mainly live).

I'm playing for relaxation; to exercise my competitive side; to try to solve the puzzle that is poker in it's various forms; and when it works out, make a little bit of money here and there. . .

I'm playing for the "gaming"....better than chess and any other strategy game I have played.

Poker can be both exhilerating and completely frustrating. It is challenging, and that is why I play. I love competition and on line poker gives me an easy, inexpensive way to compete. If I'm moderately successful, some financial reward as well. People spend enormous sums on recreation, I don't have to. Even when I have little money to spare I can always find plenty of free action and have played for months with nothing but freerolls or playchips.

I play for money. I play for the minimal risk and huge return offered by something like the 3.40 r/a on pokerstars.
Or a sattelite to a shot at the sunday mil.

I might sound shallow or cynical but wth, at least i'm honest.
I'm a man of small means and long ambition.
Half my employment history can be classified as 'self-employment'.
In other words no 401k, no retirement fund. No savings.
The only way i'm going to retire before I die is lottery or poker.
I dunno, at least it feels that way.

Maybe at heart I'm lazy, and abstract.
The thought of grinding out a living 6 hours a day 4 days a week playing 3/6 nlh on my arse in my undies sure does appeal to me.
Thats why I play, or at least it sounds good.

Oh, 'n i'm too cheap to gamble so lotterys out.
heh,

I play for the competition and to try something new. A lot more luck involved than backgammon, but it's less demanding on my hands.
