Cake Poker has announced that they will allow HUDs on the site, or Heads-Up Displays in spite of their previous opposition to poker tracking systems. After agreeing to test the viability of software used to track online poker stats back in July, the analysis has proved that they are in fact useful and have since been reinstated on the site as of November 9th. Now the online poker tracker software system that urged Cake Poker to do the viability test, PokerTracker, and Hold ‘em Manager, also a poker tracking system, will be allowed on the network by players.

The purpose of HUDs is to provide a multitude of useful data regarding online poker players’ betting patterns and other stats. These applications are used by many players, mostly by those who play a lot of online poker to keep tabs on the competition. These systems allow players to get more info in a short amount of time, so that they can play and bet accordingly.

Some online poker sites such as Bodog have been opposed to the use of these types of software and will introduce new software that will block the use of such systems. Bodog’s argument is that they are a recreational site and do not support professional poker playing; and therefore, there is no need for poker tracking by its players. Microgaming has also fought poker tracking systems by introducing anonymous cash tables for which player tracking systems are of no use due to the fact that players are not identified.

Despite the fact that the Cake Poker Network is allowing the use of HUDs, they also allow players to change their player names once per seven days, eliminating tracking for more than one week. Players can simply change their name and prevent an accumulation of data attached to their username.

After years of fighting the masses, the Cake Poker network has finally decided to allow its players to use hand tracking software while at the tables. The new policy went into place on November 9th and the major players in the poker analysis software category immediately jumped right in.

Hand analysis software has been the subject of debate since it was first introduced. Software packages such as PokerTracker and Hold’em Manager allow players to collect data on the hands they play, as they play them. Everything about the hand – chip stacks, community cards, hole cards (only those shown by the poker room), bets, end results – are automatically recorded on the player’s computer. The players can then review their hands to find ways to improve their game. Players could do all of this manually, but it would take great discipline and accuracy; having software that does it automatically makes it easier and faster. Plus, the software packages are able to generate multitudes of different reports with the click of a button, helping players get an even better read on how they play.

Perhaps the most controversial part of hand tracking software is the heads-up display (HUD). Not only do software packages track the user’s hands, but they also track all of their opponents’ hands. They don’t collect any information that isn’t available to others at the table (for instance, if someone folds pre-flop, the software won’t know what cards they had), but much of the information that is collected is still very valuable. This information – things like pre-flop raise percentage, aggression factor, and the like – can be summarized and displayed on the screen next to each opponent as the games are in progress. Thus, someone using a HUD can already have a basic read on an opponent if they have collected data on them in the past without having to remember anything. Professional players and serious amateurs generally swear by hand analysis software and HUDs, whereas casual players often (though not always, of course) consider them an unfair advantage. Casual players, who usually don’t play enough or make enough money playing poker to justify purchasing such software, don’t like that the pros can have an even longer leg up on them that they already do.

Serious players argue that the software is available to everybody and as long as a poker room allows it, it is fair game. It behooves them, they would say, to take advantage of a valuable tool that can help improve one’s game and, in turn, profitability. Players are allowed to take copious notes during live games and hand tracking software is a natural extension of this in the online world.

Cake Poker traditionally sided with casual players. Part of that attitude may have also been related to a business decision, as poker rooms want to see their tables filled with more casual players, who redeposit more than pro players. Anything that could make the tables more casual player-friendly is something that poker rooms typically like.

But the pressure from the poker community mounted and the Cake network has finally relented. Third party software packages like PokerTracker and Hold’em Manager are now allowed as long as a) the only data collected by the software is from hands obtained through the customer’s own play at the tables, and b) and the screen names in the hand histories that are collected match the actual screen names of the people who were playing.

To that last point, the Cake Poker network permits players to change their screen names every seven days as a means to avoid tracking by opponents. Thus, if a player has data on “John Doe” and later figures out that he has changed his screen name to “John Doe 1,” the player is not allowed to edit his collected data to reflect the name change and merge the two screen names into one.

Juan Maceiras Lapido and JP Kelly have surprisingly been dropped from the Team PokerStars line-up.

Both pros’ player pages are no longer available on the PokerStars website, while their names have also been deleted on the Team PokerStars list of players.

Interestingly, JP Kelly has also altered his Twitter account name, changing it to @JP_Kelly5 from @JPKellyStars.

It is something of a surprise to see Englishman Kelly, who won the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) £1,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em (event #1) and the World Series of Poker (WSOP) $1,500 buy-in Pot-Limit Hold’em (event #20) in the same year, ditched by PokerStars as he also enjoyed a deep run at this summer’s WSOP main event.

Kelly, who ultimately finished in 26th place to take home $302,000, joined up with Team PokerStars after his double success of 2009 and has since become established as among the most promising poker stars from the UK.

Juan Maceiras Lapido, meanwhile, became part of Team PokerStars two years back, making him the first the Spaniard to make the roster.

He sits in third place on Spain’s overall winnings list with over $1.1 million in career earnings to sit behind Carlos Mortensen and Raul Paez Corral.

While Lapido and Kelly have been dropped by PokerStars, there was better news for Englishman Jake Cody, who has become the latest member of Team PKR.

The youngest of four Triple Crown winners, Cody will now represent PKR Poker at events across the globe, as well as on the site itself.

The 23-year-old from Rochdale collected $851,192 for winning this summer’s event #2, the $25,000 buy-in Heads Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship (256 max), at the WSOP and has also enjoyed great success on the European Poker Tour (EPT) and World Poker Tour (WPT).

In doing so, Cody – who won €150,000 for finishing seventh at the recent WSOPE main event – has established himself as one of the most capable tournament pros in the world and at the same time joined an exclusive club of Triple Crown winners alongside Bertrand Grospellier, Roland de Wolfe and Gavin Griffin.

Cody, who remarkably deposited a mere $10 online as the start of his poker career, has of course turned that minimum outlay into a substantial fortune.

He is certainly thrilled to be joining PKR and said: “I’m very excited about joining Team PKR Pro. I’ve been patient with sponsorship, waiting for the right deal to come along.

“When I spoke to PKR, I was really impressed with the whole set-up and the ideas that they have going forward, and I knew straight away I wanted to be part of it.”

Cody, with more than $3million in career earnings, will now join up with fellow Team PKR players Marc ‘Waswini’ Bariller, Sascha ‘locodice’ Walter, James ‘james666’ Sudworth, Sofia ‘welllbet’ Lovgren, Scott Shelley and Vladimir ‘Beyne’ Geshkenbein.

Cody’s addition to Team PKR will undoubtedly add credibility to the now seven-strong line-up of young stars, as he now joins Londoner Shelley, who picked up £133,857 for winning the 2010 WSOPE event #3, a £1,075 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament.

On Sunday, Zimnan Ziyard won the first PokerStars.com European Poker Tour in Greece after a two-hour heads-up battle against Hauke Heseding. Ziyard became the latest British player to grab EPT glory after he called Heseding's huge all-in bluff with {A-Clubs}{7-Spades}, on the river of a {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{A-Spades}{7-Spades} board. Ziyard had Heseding, who was holding {J-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, narrowly covered. Ziyard took home €347,000 for the win at this penultimate stop of the EPT for 2011.

The day began with eight players looking for EPT glory. Andras Kovacs began the day as the short stack, with less than 10 big blinds, but he hit an early double up against Mario Puccini to get him back into the running. Puccini's bad luck at all-in situations continued when he ran kings into Charalampos Kapernopoulos' aces. Much to the delight of the Greek crowd, Kapernopoulos flopped quads.

This rejoicing was short-lived as Kapernopoulos gave the chips away, losing a flip with {A-Clubs}{10-Spades} to Andras Kovacs' {7-Spades}{7-Hearts} when the latter flopped a set for good measure. The chip merry-go-round continued soon after as another short stack, Pierre Mothes, doubled up with aces against Ziyard's ace-king, and it began to look as though no one would be eliminated during the day.

Finally, Mario Puccini became the first casualty when he reshoved with {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} from the small blind against Florian Schlep's button raise. Schlep held {A-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and the board bricked, sending Puccini to the rail to pick up €27,000.

Puccini's exit provided the catalyst for the final table to really start going. Kapernopoulos was almost immediately eliminated right after, pushing with jack-ten into Heseding, who was holding pocket kings. His elimination left only one Greek player — John Taramas, who provided a major talking point for many in the media with one play. The blinds were at 20,000/40,000, and Taramas three-bet, then called off around half of his stack with {K-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} against the relatively tight Pierre Mothes who was holding {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}.

Barely an hour later, we saw the biggest pot of the tournament up to that point when Heseding eliminated Kovacs. Mothes opened to 110,000 preflop and Heseding made it 250,000 before Kovacs moved all-in for 1.4 million. Mothes got out of the way but Heseding said, “I'm sorry, I can't fold — I call,” before flipping {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} to Kovacs' {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}. The pot was for the chip lead and it went Heseding's way when the board came down {J-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}.

With Kovacs' elimination, Taramas held the shortest stack of the remaining players, but managed to double with {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} through Heseding's {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} to put him back in the mix. Instead, Mothes was the player eliminated in fifth place, when he check-raised all-in on a {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{9-Clubs} board holding {Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades} only to find Ziyard, his opponent in the hand, had flopped a flush with {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. No jack or queen came to save Mothes and Ziyard retook the chip lead from Heseding.

Schleps managed to double through Taramas before the latter did same against Ziyard, both winning their respective flips. Schleps however, lost the next one he played. In a blind versus blind battle, his {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} could not hold against Heseding's {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} on a board of {Q-Spades}{5-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Schleps was eliminated in fourth place, taking home €100,800.

After eliminating Schleps, Heseding had almost 60 percent of the chips in play, but that was only the start of an epic battle between the final three, that lasted over five hours. Heseding lost the chip lead to Ziyard, the latter then providing a masterclass of ICM bullying trying gain a complete stranglehold on the title. However despite being crippled with sevens losing to Taramas' eights, Heseding refused to die and won with ace-four against ace-three, ace-jack against kings and finally king-ten against ace-king — all against Ziyard to come back into the fight.

Despite getting lucky on these occasions, Heseding showed courage in executing several big bluffs for his tournament stack and managed to finally eliminate Taramas with {A-Clubs}{10-Spades} against {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, sending this tournament into its' last chapter.

Yet, there was another twist in the tale as in the fourth hand of heads-up, Ziyard doubled up with {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} against Heseding's {A-Clubs}{7-Spades} to once again recapture the chip lead. The lead switched several times until the final hand where the Heseding's bold bluff was bravely called down for all the chips.

For most of us, our first taste of online tournament action on PokerStars has been the traditional No Limit Hold'em freezeout. That's certainly how I first came to play via the first-ever World Blogger Championship of Poker (WBCOOP) back in 2005, and I bet most of you reading this came in through the freezeout door as well.

Over time, though, there is the danger that familiarity breeds contempt, so unless you are winning tidy sums of cash regularly, you'll want to try something fresh once in a while. That's why the PokerStars lobby and tournament schedule is packed full of different types of tournaments and promotions to suit every taste.

Sure, the current 10th Anniversary celebrations have thrown up many new promotions, but these are also introduced all-year round, together with additions to the regular tournament schedule. The Daily Bigs, for example, were first introduced in April, 2011. These were four daily tournaments with varying buy-ins, each with tasty guarantees. While they were big, they got bigger - and bigger still. Now there are 13 Daily Big tournaments each day! You may also have tried Flighted Tournaments, Knockouts, Bounties or Shootouts.

It's not just multi-table tournaments that have seen changes over the years. In Sit & Go tournaments, PokerStars mastered the Steps system and then shook things up early in 2011 with the introduction of Fifty50 Sit & Go tournaments. Here, once half the field is eliminated, everyone gets their buy-in back and then remaining prize funds are distributed according to chip stack at that point. There's a rather complicated formula involved, and if you're into such things, then you can look at the Fifty50 rules on this page.

One thing is for sure, variety is the spice of life, and if you keep playing on PokerStars, you'll have a long and happy poker journey. If you don't play on PokerStars yet, isn't it about time you tried it out? Visit PokerStars-com now and download the easy-to-use software.

Good luck!

There comes a time as a poker player when it’s (financially) correct to play higher limits. Cue the song Moving On Up at this time. I’m going to be selfish and talk about my navigation through the rough waters of low and mid stakes.

I started playing micro stakes on Party Poker when I was 17. I turned $50 into $50,000. Cool. I bought a car, got a girlfriend and spent all of my money traveling. Not so cool. I always thought I could build my roll back up easily at any time. This is not true.

It takes time (a lot of time) to build a roll and garner the experience to move up in stakes. Any monkey could go on a rush and build a massive roll. I’m talking about a slow process where you can add the tools to your game to be competitive at the next limit.

That being said, I would like to give you a guideline to follow when moving up the ladder. I wish someone would’ve given me this when it was my turn. Take advantage of my trials and tribulations and read and re-read this article.

THE SWINGS OF BIGGER GAMES ARE...BIGGER: The players, on average, will be better when you move up and will put you in more difficult spots where you might make mistakes. This is why you need a bigger bankroll to play higher stakes. Say you can play live $1-$2 no-limit hold’em with 15 buy-ins, whereas you may need 20 or 25 buy-ins for $2-$5.

BE WILLING TO MOVE DOWN AT ANY GIVEN TIME: Take your ego and erase it from the equation. Money is cool, enough said. If you move up and start losing, whether it’s a structural leak in your game or fear of playing higher, whatever, move down immediately to a limit you can beat. The confidence you’ll gain from booking wins is invaluable when attempting to move up.

TAKE SHOTS: Yeah, I said it. I may get flamed for this one, but I’m a big fan of taking controlled shots at higher limits. When I’m crushing my limit and playing my “A” game, I may take a shot at a higher game every now and then. If things don’t go my way I know I can drop back when needed. You’ll never know how far you can go if you don’t take a few shots along the way. Just remember the reason you lost that buy-in at the bigger game may not have been because you aren’t good enough; It could’ve been a cooler or a bad beat that isn’t your fault. Have no fear; it’s only money.

THINK OF THE GAME OBJECTIVELY: Always look at it in terms of big blinds and percentage of the pot being bet. Don’t look at it in terms of money as it will negatively affect your play at the higher limits. I remember the first time I played $5-$10, I said to myself, “If I raise preflop with A-K, miss and c-bet, that’s like $200. Oh my God!” The game becomes much easier when you say, “OK, so he raised three times the big blind; what does that mean?”
Lastly, just have fun. It’s poker.

US poker players waiting for a refund from Ultimate Bet (U😎 and Absolute Poker can heave a sigh of relief because the Cereus Network has stated that it has chalked out an effective refund plan. It may be recalled that the US federal government had cracked down on UB and Absolute Poker and had seized their funds in mid-April this year. Besides UB and Absolute Poker, Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars were also accused of violating the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) 2006 and their CEOs were booked on various counts of money laundering, bank fraud, and illegal gambling.

Six months have passed after the federal crackdown, and during these six months, Absolute Poker and UB players have been unable to withdraw their frozen poker funds. Now, they will finally be refunded.

The Kahnawake Gaming Commissioner (KGC), based in Canada, issued a press statement regarding numerous meetings held over the past weeks with Blanca Gaming, the company that took over the Cereus Poker Network in August 2010, to discuss ways and means of refunding UB and Absolute Poker’s US players. According to the KGC statement, Blanca’s assets will be liquidated and the proceeds will be delivered to the players. The proposal has been placed before the US District Court of Southern District of New York (SDNY) for its approval. The KGC has also assured that, throughout these past six months, it has been concerned about refunding Absolute Poker’s and UB Poker’s US as well as non US players’ frozen poker funds at the earliest possible.

Needless to say, this piece of news should make aggrieved ex poker players of UB Poker and Absolute Poker happy. Many of them have already migrated to other online poker rooms and have resumed their online poker activities there. Simultaneously, these players cannot be expected to start celebrating until and unless they have seen their frozen poker funds in their own bank accounts.

Bitter players have not forgotten that UB Poker and Absolute Poker had talked of reaching an agreement regarding refunding players with the US DoJ in May. Nothing came out of this assurance, and players were left wondering if they will ever see their money again. Five months later, the Cereus Network is again promising to refund the players.

Ex players of UB and Absolute Poker have been waiting long for what is rightfully theirs and it can be only hoped that they will be refunded soon.

Full Tilt Poker was once the second biggest online poker room in the world, before it saw its US operation shut down back in April 2011 followed by the rest of the world in June.

Since then, Groupe Bernard Tapie (GBT) has been trying to negotiate a settlement with the US Department of Justice for the purchase of the beleaguered online poker room’s distressed assets.

It was then announced recently that Full Tilt’s frustrated customers were a step closer to receiving their $330 million in lost funds after an agreement was reached in principle to sell the company for around $80 million, pending its shareholder’s approval.

In the latest twist in the ongoing saga, it would appear that potential new owners Groupe Bernard Tapie have struck a deal with the DoJ which would also permit them a concession not even yet afforded to PokerStars. Namely, Full Tilt may be permitted to re-enter the US market in the eventuality of online poker legalisation in the States. Expressing his optimism ahead of the agreement, Full Tilt Poker attorney Jeff Ifrah commented:

“The deal that was reached between the investors and the Department of Justice (DoJ) is going to pave the way for players to be reimbursed and it’s hopefully going to pave the way for a new FTP to be re-launched. Those two together, is good for poker, good for the industry and good for the players.”

Groupe Bernard Tapie (GBT) are specialists in acquiring distressed companies and returning them to profitability. If this latest deal goes through then there is little doubt that GBT will be once again be making a shrewd move by investing in the once hugely profitable online poker business. In addition, Full Tilt Poker was once acknowledged as having the best and innovative software in the industry, once again making its potential purchase a solid investment.

It may now be looking that the past reports of Full Tilt’s death may have been greatly exaggerated. Phil Ivey may even be feeling a slight easing of pressure since the debacle started, and is currently making his first poker playing appearance since Black Friday, at the APPT Main Event in Macau.

One of the attorneys acting for Full Tilt Poker, Jeff Ifrah, has said that American players who still need to be paid out by the poker room may resist making a claim for their cash because of fears that they will be taxed. Ifrah called on the US authorities to be lenient with these players and to find a way to allow them to make a claim for what is rightfully theirs without being afraid of the tax man.

“Players need some encouragement to submit their claims as some may be concerned about action from the IRS,” he said.

After the buyers of Full Tilt Poker, the French investment group, Groupe Bernard Tapie, reached an agreement with the Department of Justice that allowed the sale to go through, Ifrah said that the US government will be establishing a fund that will oversee the payback of the millions of dollars owed to Full Tilt Poker players. However, according to the attorney, there are a number of issues that still need to be discussed regarding how the claims can be made.

There are a number of obstacles that could stand in the way the payout taking place in the near future, including motions filed by several board members of the online poker room against the US government. However, it is expected that these motions will ultimately be dropped.

Full Tilt Poker owes its former players around $150 million, although it has not yet been decided how much of the money will be paid back, nor does the sale to Groupe Tapie guarantee that the money will be seen at all. According to the deal, some of the money that is found in bank accounts associated with the online poker room will be returned to the investment group upon the sale, with the intention being to “bring this matter to a complete resolution as soon as possible.”

Party Poker is offering all its players free entry into a competition to qualify for the Aussie Millions next January. What have you to lose apart from your sanity?
Party Poker is not the world's largest poker site, the one that is offering you the chance to play in the biggest tournament ever for a humble $1. That honour belongs to PokerStars. On the other hand, Party Poker is the number two site, and it is generous with its profits, so much so that it is offering all and sundry the chance to qualify for free for the Aussie Millions which will be held in January next year. In Australia, of course!
The main event has an $11,400 buy-in - what was that about a world recession?
Party Poker is offering 8 nights’ accommodation at the Crown Promenade hotel - right next to the venue, the Crown Casino - and $2,500 spending money. Qualifiers started last week. So how do you qualify for free?
First, enter one of the daily freerolls, and if you finish in the top 25, you will receive a free entry into the Sub Qualifier $2 rebuy.
For every $74 in the prize pool, there will be one entry to the next level; then one in ten will qualify for the Satellite Qualifier. Finally, one in 25 will win a $16,000 all inclusive package. These tournaments are all No Limit Hold 'Em, so you can be busted out at any time in one hand.
We said it was free, we didn't say it was easy! Imagine falling at the final hurdle. Imagine finishing 26th out of those 25 lucky players.
Alternatively, you could enter the daily $250.00 freeroll at 11pm London time, and if you are lucky enough to crack kings with AJ, you might just finish in 150th place and win 27c as a certain individual did Saturday night/Sunday morning.

What have you got to lose but sleep?
If you want to give Party Poker a try, sign up here.
If instead you want to play on Full Tilt, the site is still in limbo, and with every day that passes, Lazarus has less and less chance of rising from the dead.
There are though plenty of other poker sites out there offering free tournament entries and other promotions.
For example, Cake Poker is also offering a package for the Aussie Millions, and Coral is offering a sign up bonus of up to $1,900.
If you are still learning the game and prefer to watch rather than play, check out some of the new uploads to YouTube. Last week, the infamous Poker Brat Phil Hellmuth posted a short taster training video to the site. One thing is for sure, you won't find him playing freeroll qualifiers.

A professional poker league that's trying to become the PGA Tour of poker is giving card icon Doyle Brunson its first lifetime player card, making him automatically eligible to play all future tournaments.

Epic Poker League Commissioner Annie Duke told The Associated Press that Brunson was a clear choice to be offered the lifetime invitation given his decades of success in the game and contributions to making it more popular and accessible.

Duke and Jeffrey Pollack, executive chairman of the company that owns Epic, say Brunson will be honored Wednesday at the start of a $20,000 regular season no-limit Texas Hold 'em tournament — the third of four regular-season events for Epic in its inaugural run.

Brunson — who has $6.1 million in lifetime tournament earnings, including nearly $3 million and 10 gold bracelets since 1976 at the World Series of Poker — said he appreciates the honor as a token to remember struggles players made to make poker the game it is today.

"It's unnecessary but I guess it's nice to be remembered for what we went through to get poker to this point," Brunson told The Associated Press. "Most people just don't realize exactly what all transpired ... but we went through some pretty adverse things."

Brunson said that before he and a group of card sharks known as the "Texas Rounders" came to Sin City and spread limit and no-limit Texas Hold 'em games at the Golden Nugget casino downtown, poker was not very popular.

"Poker had died in Las Vegas," Brunson told the AP. "I think that was probably the turning point — I don't know if poker would have ever gotten off the ground or not."

Brunson went on to write "Super System," a guide to poker strategy still referred to by many players as the definitive guide to playing Hold 'em and other variations of poker. Brunson said he wrote the book to try to attract players to the game and help them understand its fundamentals.

"It stimulated poker in a way that I don't think anything else could have," Brunson said. "The game of poker is about people, and you have to be able to understand people to play poker."

Brunson already qualified for a two-year player card under league eligibility rules, which limit invitations to roughly 200 of the top tournament players in the world. The eligibility requirements and global player rankings are weighed to emphasize recent success.

Pollack said Brunson's contributions to poker are timeless, making him the game's statesman.

"The modern history of poker is Doyle's life," Pollack said.

Duke, an accomplished player herself who is well-known outside the poker world for her TV appearances including "The Celebrity Apprentice," said Brunson combined elements of play and personality that make him unparalleled in poker.

"He just has this secret sauce of every accomplishment you can imagine, big generosity to the poker community, incredible longevity, amazing ambassadorship," Duke said. "And then on top of that he's just an easy guy to really like."

Brunson, who did not play in Epic's first two main events, said he is not likely to play significantly more tournaments because of the lifetime card.

"As I'm getting older, these tournaments are getting too hard to come through," said Brunson. "It's probably not worth it to me anymore to really go on the tournament grind, so I don't plan on playing a whole lot of tournaments the rest of my life.

"I much prefer to play cash games," he said.

It not looks so good for them.
