On February 1, PokerStars was awarded the '2015 Poker Operator of the Year' title at the ninth edition of the International Gaming Awards (IGA), a ceremony held at the Savoy Hotel in London, United Kingdom. This is the fourth consecutive time that the largest online poker site leaves the awards ceremony with the title.

Commenting on the award, the vice president of Corporate Communications at Amaya and PokerStars Eric Hollreiser explained that the poker room is particularly proud that the independent judging panel decided to reward PokerStars for the efforts made by the poker room in 2015.

"We are grateful to have earned the award, and dedicate this to the millions of players and thousands of staff who have contributed to PokerStars' ongoing success," said Hollreiser.

According to PokerStars, there were several key themes behind PokerStars' success in 2015, including "the bigger, better, & richer online tournaments; and a comprehensive vision to grow the game of poker."

In a statement issued on February 2, the poker room highlighted the popularity of the Spin & Go as one of the key-factors that led to the title.

Launched back in October 2014, the lottery-style Spin & Go sit-and-go tournaments have created 13 million-dollar winners to date and quickly become one of the most popular format in the industry, with approximately 150 million real money games played on the global, shared-liquidity player pool.

As the case versus Kentucky continues, Amaya finds itself fighting to have the previous owners of PokerStars pay their share of the damages.

In addition to the $870 million ruling in Kentucky that Amaya is currently fighting, the parent company of PokerStars now has a $300 million dispute with the company’s previous owners.

One of the provisions of the agreement under which Amaya acquired the entities that make up and own Rational Group called for an escrow fund to be established. The escrow was to cover expenses for outstanding legal issues from when the previous owners operated the company.

However, Amaya received notice from the company’s previous owners last month indicating that they are disputing the claims made by Amaya in an attempt to collect those funds.

The details outlining the circumstances under which the funds would be distributed have not been disclosed, nor have the specific details of the claims for those funds made by Amaya.
Escrow tapped in past claims

In January, Amaya reached a €5.9 million settlement with Italian tax authorities for discrepancies uncovered in an audit of PokerStars subsidiary Halfords Media Italy S.r.l.—some of which dated back to 2009.

In a press release at the time of the settlement, Amaya announced that the “entire settlement amount and related expenses” were paid out of the escrow account established at the time Amaya acquired PokerStars.
Amaya appealing in Kentucky

Amaya also announced today that it has filed a notice of appeal in its case against Kentucky. Amaya was required to post a $100 million supersedeas bond in order to delay payment on the court’s previous $870 million judgement in favor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky while the appeal is being pursued.

As part of the process of posting the appeals bond, Amaya was required to deliver $35 million in cash as collateral and letters of credit totaling an additional $30 million.

Amaya has vowed to “continue to vigorously challenge” the court decision. A judgement of $290 million in the case was rendered in November 2015, but both Amya and the state elected to appeal the decision.

Kentucky sought to have the damages trebled as a penalty—which is allowed under state law. Amaya argued that it only received $18 million in revenue from poker players in the state over the time period.

Thomas Wingate, Kentucky Circuit Court Judge, sided with the state in late December and raised the amount of the judgement against Amaya to $870 million.

Granted, it’s only one state, but one is certainly better than none.

As Bill Murray learned in the hilarious 1991 comedy “What About Bob,” progress is often made in the form of baby steps. And PokerStars’ upcoming launch is yet another baby step in what many hope will eventually be regulated online poker throughout the U.S.


When PokerStars launches in New Jersey next month, there is reason to believe that other states will take notice. We can expect a considerable amount of publicity, even in the mainstream press. What we want that publicity to do is to prompt other states into action by enacting legislation of their own.

In addition to California, Pennsylvania and New York have made moves in that direction. The bad actor issue is practically a non-issue in those states, and it is likely to stay that way considering the approval and impending launch of PokerStars in New Jersey.

Starting Wednesday March 16 at approximately 4 pm local time, the PokerStars NJ software will be available to download, and the restricted soft launch will commence ahead of the full launch scheduled on Monday March 21.

For five days, up to 500 players will be allowed to play for real money on the PokerStars software while in New Jersey. Play will be restricted to 8 hours (from 4pm to midnight) on March 16 and 17. On March 18, the available hours will double with play open from 8am until midnight, and for the final two days of the soft launch (March 19 and 20), play will be allowed around the clock.

Barring any unexpected setbacks, PokerStars will be available to the general public located within the New Jersey borders starting on Monday March 21.
Signing Up for a PokerStars NJ Account

Poker players in New Jersey that have never had a PokerStars account before, simply need to create a new account to start playing. However, those that have had a PokerStars account in the past have the choice of using their old screen name for their new PokerStars NJ account, or starting from scratch with a completely new account.

Those that choose to convert their old account should use the special “Quick Account Creation” process which will get them the added benefit of converting any Frequent Player Points (FPP) left in their account to the new PokerStars VIP currency: StarsCoins. In addition, the conversion to StarsCoins will take place at a special conversion rate of 1.6 StarsCoins per FFP. The standard rate will be 1-for1 going forward.
Lower Requirements for VIP Rewards in New Jersey

Those that convert their old accounts will also get the added benefit of receiving a VIP status based on their level of play from their old account. For example, players that had Supernova status when PokerStars stopped accepting play from within the US on Black Friday will receive Supernova status for the remainder of 2016. Players on monthly VIP status levels, such as GoldStar, will receive that status level, but they will need to meet the minimum requirements to maintain that level on a monthly basis.

PlatinumStar – 4,000 monthly VPPs, will award 22-25%

GoldStar – 2,000 monthly VPPs, will award 17-21%

SilverStar – 500 monthly VPPs, will award 15-18%

ChromeStar – 100 monthly VPPs, will award 12-15%

BronzeStar – no VPP requirement, will award 8-9%

The estimated rakeback rates stated above are based on generating 5.5 VPPs/$1 rake.

Amaya, the owner of online poker room PokerStars, has signed a content distribution deal with Swedish game developer NetEnt. The agreement means NetEnt will be the first content provider of both mobile and desktop games for PokerStars NJ.

PokerStars opens for business in New Jersey on March 21. The deal between the two companies isn’t very surprising considering NetEnt provides content to many Amaya subsidiaries in Europe.

NetEnt content is currently provided to multiple NJ online casinos through a New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement transactional waiver. NetEnt has contracts with Borgata, Golden Nugget, Resorts Casino, Tropicana, Virgin, and Caesars.

PokerStars NJ has published its online poker tournament weekly schedule, and the events that top the billing match—but do not surpass—guaranteed tournaments currently scheduled in New Jersey.

Every day, PokerStars’ “Nightly Stars” tournament promises a $10,000 guarantee for a $100 buy-in. There are also four “Daily Bigs,” with buyins ranging from $5 to $20 and guaranteed prize pools between $500 to $1000.


There are two areas where PokerStars is testing new waters:

It’s the largest insider-trading investigation in Canada.

David Baazov, chief executive of the world’s largest online gaming company, has taken an indefinite leave of absence to fight insider trading charges leveled against him.

Amaya, the Quebec-based parent company of online sites PokerStars and Full Tilt, announced in a press release on Tuesday that Baazov would be stepping back after Quebec regulators charged the CEO with five counts of insider-trading.

“I believe that stepping down in the short term will help to avoid distraction for the company and its management while I vigorously contest all allegations made against me and pursue my bid to acquire the company,” Baazov said in a statement.

Quebec’s Autorité des marchés financiers also froze the bank and trading accounts of 13 other individuals—including Baazov’s brother Josh—for trading while receiving privileged information about Amaya, and for booking profits of nearly $1.15 million between 2011 and 2016.

The charges are a part of what has been called the largest insider trading investigation in Canadian history, and the period of trading mentioned in the orders coincide with Amaya’s $3.8 billion-takeover of poker sites PokerStars and Full Tilt.

That deal made Amaya the owner of the two of the most popular poker sites in the world, and has resulted in 100 million registered players under them. However, the acquisition also raised many suspicions, as Amaya’s stock was trading up prior to the deal despite its status as a minor, financially-challenged company, reported the Wall Street Journal.

On Friday, March 4, the body of self-made millionaire Koen Everink was found in his home in Bilthoven, Netherlands. The former director of the travel agency Eliza Was Here was stabbed to death.

Twenty days later, on March 24, Mark de J., tennis coach of Dutch tennis pro Robin Haase, was arrested at Schiphol airport in connection with the homicide. At the time of the arrest, de J. was on his way back from Miami, where Haase was scheduled to play in the ATP Masters 1000. Hasse ended up not participating in the competition because of a knee injury.

Prior to the arrest, de J. spoke to the authorities and explained that he had been watching a Dutch premier league match between Feynoord and AZ at Everink's place. He reported that he had seen suspicious characters in the house's surroundings, but his claim raised suspicion with police investigators. De J. submitted his phone to a search but, was allowed to travel to the United States with Haase.
Is an €80,000 Poker Debt the Motive?

On March 26, Dutch newspaper Het Algemeen Dagblad was the first to connect De J. to online poker.

"Mark de J. had until recently been active in online poker," the newspaper wrote. "It appears he was playing for large sums of money. On an online poker forum, he offered large sums of money that he wanted to exchange to a different electronic currency. There are different types of electronic wallets, such as Skrill and Neteller, which allow for online payments.
