Everyone thinks of a poker tell as something along the lines of John Malkovich and his Oreo in Rounders, but in online poker, you don't get to see your opponents. While online poker is, in general, much more mathematically-based than live games, there are still things players do that give you insight into their hand.

Betting Speed
If a player raises quickly before the flop flop, then the flop comes and they take a moment before making their bet, this says that they likely missed the flop and didn't hit. They may bet small just to keep the bet going in an effort to represent the best hand, but if you're holding top pair at this point, don't be afraid to bet big to knock them out of the running and take their chips.

On the other hand, if a player bets fast pre-flop and the comes and they lag yet still bet big, this is where you should be concerned. If you are holding a decent hand at this point, you can call, but be weary of an over pocket pair they may be holding on you.

Chatting
For some reason, a lot of players think that they can represent their hands in player chat in the same way they would at a poker table. You'll see them saying "Thanks!" to someone who's betting or talk about how you've got them pinned down when you bet. Just ignore this and play the cards that are in front of you.

Player Notes
Use your online poker software's note-taking function frequently! This allows you to build up a database of information to use against your opponents. That means that the next time a certain player is at a game or tournament with you, you can read your notes and take advantage of the. For instance, if someone bluffs a lot or chases a lot or fits a certain player profile, you make a note on them and this helps you read their play the next time you are playing against each other.

Someone finally did it. This week, the International Federation of Poker published the first-ever attempt to definitely define the rules of poker to provide both a way to learn the game's ins and outs and provide resolution to disputes at the table. The $20 book is, of course, simply entitled The Rules of Poker and has been published by Limehouse books in the UK.

In a statement, Anthony Holden, president of the IFP, said, "One of the key roles of any sports governing body is to establish clear and consistent rules throughout the world. It would clearly be absurd if the rules of football or tennis differed from country to country and poker is no different."

The International Poker Federation is a non-profit organization that was established in April 2009 to "serve as the global governing body for poker." The IFP membership features National Poker Associations and Federations from around the world. Originally established by seven member nations from Europe and South America, the IFP currently has 41 national Member Federations participating.

The IFP's new book features rules for tournaments, cash games, match play, various poker variants and even a test section to help players test their knowledge.

"It is a sign of the growing maturity and popularity of poker that we have taken this step. But this book is designed to cover far more than merely tournament poker. It is a perfect volume to keep on hand in poker clubs and kitchen table home games the world over," Holden added.

Last week, a federal judge in Brooklyn overturned the indictment of a Staten Island man who ran poker games in the back room of a warehouse, on the grounds that poker is a game of skill, not chance — and hence, such games cannot be prosecuted under federal laws prohibiting illegal gambling businesses.

It’s just the latest sally in the ongoing debate over poker that’s been raging for more than 150 years. And it comes on the heels of a ruling last year by the Justice Department that 1962′s Wire Act applied only to sports betting, not poker. This is kind of ironic, since the Justice Department also shut down online poker in the spring of 2011, charging the men behind the three most popular online sites with fraud and money laundering.

Clearly, the issue is far from resolved, but John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Player’s Alliance, is encouraged by the latest ruling by Judge Jack B. Weinstein. “Today’s federal court ruling is a major victory for the game of poker and the millions of Americans who enjoy playing it,” he said in a statement. But wait! Via @Chemjobber on Twitter, I learned of a spanking new study by German researchers concluding that winning at poker is basically all about luck. They recruited 300 poker players, half self-defined “experts” and half “average,” sat them down at tables of six, evenly divided between expert and average players, and then had them all play 60 hands of Texas Hold ‘Em. Oh, and they fixed the deals, the better to measure the effects of luck.

Question: There's been something on my mind, but I haven't come across anybody who's able to give me advice that I'd feel confident putting into action. You're definitely the guy to ask since you've had consistent results in non-hold 'em events.

I've observed your play in the mixed-game tournaments online, which has already improved my game. I have played mixed cash games for many years and hold my own, but I've had poor results in tournaments. I realize that I can't just wander into a tournament playing my normal game and expect a good result. What kind of strategy should I be thinking about in a general sense?

Answer: Dear Jerry,

I'm curious about whether your strengths are in the flop games (hold 'em and Omaha 8) or in the up-card games (stud, razz and stud 8). A HORSE tournament favors players who are more proficient in the stud-style games. This is not only because it's three parts up card and two parts flop, but also because of the extra betting round in stud games. As you get deeper into the tourney, every hand in the stud games becomes more crucial.

Once you get involved, you generally have to follow up all the way to the river, whereas the flop games are more "hit or miss" -- you can defend your blind for one extra bet, and if you miss the flop, you just release. There are many cases where the betting becomes accelerated in the up-card games, more so than in the flop games. Since most of each player's hand is exposed, there's a greater chance of being able to read somebody's hand, which in turn creates aggression in players who would have to play more timidly in flop games, where they're often unsure about opponents' holdings.

That's just the tip of the iceberg as far as why the stud players are heavily favored in HORSE events. So, step one: Improve your skills in stud, razz and stud hi-lo.

I'm going to share the recipe for the "secret sauce" that gives me an upper hand in these events, and it's the polar opposite of much of the advice that I normally give.

The key ingredient is the social game.

Poker is about gathering information. The idea is to acquire as much info as you can, then put it all into your mental calculator to come up with your best option for every hand. However, not all information is good information. Your opponents are constantly trying to trip you up by sending out misinformation to prevent you from reading them accurately.

Crucial to your success in a HORSE tournament is figuring out the best game of each player at your table. Players open up their hand ranges in the games in which they're better and more confident. Conversely, they tighten up and play timidly in the games they don't play as well. Information gained in this category is extremely reliable. You'll be able to hone in on hand ranges, react accordingly and be correct a high percentage of the time.

Guess what? The best way to gather this info is by simply asking for it -- often they gladly oblige. Start by being friendly and making small talk to bring down their guard.

Then, go in for the kill: "What's your favorite game?" Followed directly by: "OK, but what's your best game?" The flood gates will usually open and they'll spew out good, reliable information that you'll soon be using against them.

Power in poker comes from information, NOT the cards! The only people profiting off the cards are the guys making them and selling them.

Yes, there's luck in poker, but over a thousand hands the better player always wins, says Steve Gee, who has outlasted more than 74,750 opponents to make it to the final table at the 2012 Word Series of Poker championship, which wraps up Monday and Tuesday in Las Vegas. ESPN2 will cover the action starting at 5 p.m. PDT.

Gee shared some of his secrets of success that have earned him millions of dollars, from general approaches for beginners to specific game-play tips for experienced players:

• Keep meticulous track of all your poker sessions: how much you bought in for, what the limits were, how long you played, how much you won or lost and several key hands. The biggest thing amateurs do wrong is fail to keep track.

• Take something from each poker session, and study your opponents.

• Read online discussions on strategy and tactics.

• Understand the value of position, it's the most critical thing in poker. If you have position – meaning you get to bet last or next to last – you get a lot more information because everybody has to act before you. When you're under the gun – meaning you have to bet first – your range is a lot tighter, but as you get closer to the button (which acts last), you've got to play a lot more hands, anything from pocket aces to 4-5 suited.

• Under the gun, I would probably play pocket 5s and higher, or 10-J suited and higher. On the button I'm playing down to pocket deuces and 4-5 suited.

• Don't limp into a bet, that's the sign of a fish. Players who call bets repeatedly are not in control of the pot. Poker rewards aggression.

• I bet the same amount every time from aces to 6-7 suited, so my opponent doesn't know what I've got.

• In cash games I'm ready to sit down for eight hours. If you sit down for only an hour or two, you're not going to have the patience and discipline to wait for the right hand. But if you haven't played a hand in 20 minutes, your opponents are more likely to be afraid of you.

• The higher the buy-in and bet size, the better the value you get on the rake, or the house's cut of each pot.

• You have to know the size of the pot and how much you're in for. Study how much is in the pot and calculate your odds accordingly. If you have a flush draw on the flop in No-Limit Hold 'em, you're a 5 to 1 underdog to hit it because there are 46 unseen cards. So if there's $1,000 in the pot after the flop and you call an $800 bet with a flush draw, you've made a mistake because you're now paying $800 to win $1,800, less than 3 to 1.

• I know weak players right away, calling big raises from out of position.

• Even the best players sometimes lose hands to players who luck out on the turn or river cards (the fourth and fifth face-up cards in Hold 'em).

Beating these games does not require you to become a masterful poker player, it primarily entails that you are able to outplay poor opponents. Beating good players at high limits can be incredibly difficult, entailing many complex moves. However, winning at low limits is pretty straightforward.

What do I mean? Basically, other players won't be paying attention to you. They only care about their own cards; they don't care about you or your cards. They will play their hand as they always play their hand, regardless of whether or not you are in the pot. You are basically a ghost to them... but hopefully you will be a ghost that's slowly taking their money! If you want to beat these types of players, you simply need to a play a straightforward game that will win in the long run. For example, play tight, don't do any fancy bluffs, bet aggressively when you probably have the best hand, and utilize pot odds for your drawing decisions.

When it comes to deception with these players, slowplaying can work. These players are easily fooled into thinking they have the best hand when they hit a pair on the turn, so giving them a free card when you hold the stone nuts can be to your advantage. However, bluffing is simply an exercise in futility. These guys want to see if they have the best hand. They'll pay to see your cards just so they can see them sometimes! Don't expect to scare any fish at lower limits with an extra $2 bet.

Master the art of choosing starting hands, employing pot odds, and aggressively betting your winning hands. However, psychological strategies are generally useless. Your opponents are not thinking too deeply, and attempting any fancy plays will only hurt you.

Greg Raymer has had one really amazing streak of victories, winning four Heartland Poker Tour titles in four months. In this tournament, the Florence HPT Championship Open, he lifted the title by overcoming more than 335 players in four days. This is a reminder to the world of why he was the 2004 WSOP Main Event champion. It is a conquest that earned him a cool $106,030. Not too bad for a world master!

Before this, Raymer conquered the July HPT Mexico to bag $71,875, the Missouri HPT in September for $121,973, and the HPT Iowa in October for $72, 089. This record of wins could be called the ultimate ground work leading to his four-month amazing run.

In the final six’s table of the HPT Florence, FossilMan Greg Reymer was among the short-stacks. After eight hands however, he had pushed to the lead chip to eliminate Kenny Hicks who held A/Q to FossilMan’ A/K. This was warning enough for the remaining contenders. Postman Jason Guinn had even commented earlier that no matter what happened, he was a recreational player simply exhilarated to be around a world champion.

A jinx could not have worked better than this comment, as Jason was next to fall out of the tournament. Iverson Snuffer was next in line followed closely by Bruce Ostrander. Finally, Jacob Bazeley was all that stood between Raymer and another world title. As the game progressed, Raymer got hold of a 5.36-million chip lead over Jacob Bazeley’s 2.96 million. In a bizarre twist, both players went all-in and Raymer held an A/Q to Bezeley’s A/6, winning the table.

As expected, the end of the game was met with the poker community patting the FossilMan’s back for yet another incredible run. Greg Reymer is not just a champion but also a modest man, a quality he demonstrated by later tweeting his acknowledgment of their support. He thanked them all profusely, saying that the last five months were incredible and winning four out of six was nothing short of amazing.
