Need Poker Advice Fast! "Help Help"

Guys Sorry to send out the SOS, but I got no where else I can really go for solid poker advice. I have just moved to Roanoke Rapids N.C, outskirts, anyway to my surprise my girlfriend has a friend that she works with who told her that there are internet cafe's around here that you can play poker with nice payouts. That was yesterday. I just got my hands on 50 bucks and you know where I am headed. Anyone have any experience playing in this type of environment? Your Advice would be greatly appreciated.

The second thing I wanna ask is this concerning a poker hand that i think I might have played wrong yesterday and I just have to know.
I'm past midway of tourney and I have about 11, 000 chips roughly estimating. I am playing tight premium hands. I got dealt a A,Q of hearts suited, I raise the blind up to 650. This guy with 6000 chips goes all in, everybody folds, I call. He shows a A,8. Flop comes and you know what happens next. 8,J,8 on the flop, the turn, Q; Hell I forgot what the river card was but it damn sure wasn't a Q. So I end up losing half my chip stack and really never recovered; 10 minutes later I'm watching cops on Fox.
If I had of hit a Q on the flop I would not be asking this because I have always thought it was the right move, "in this type of situation" But now i am wondering was that the right move? I want to improve on my game anyway I can and if that was the wrong move i certainly don't wanna screw up again. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Well, in the second part of your post you asked " did I make the right call". The answer is NO. Even though afterwards it seemed like you did because you had AQ VS A8. The bottom line is you raised 650 preflop on a drawing hand and he came over the top 9x that. So a call here is definately a gamble. You could have been up against Bigger hands than you were holding. Sure if you win you are looking great but the alternative, well you already know that part. Sure, your going to have to make some tough calls and you can't win a tourney without sticking your chips in the middle, but you were in a good spot to fold there and should have in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice. I will play AQ different now. You right about the alternative; For half your chip it's just to risky. Thanks

Tallseas I was just noticing that you from SC. You ever go down to little river and play on Sun Cruise? I been down there a couple of times.

Haven't been to Little River in years. Not since my Aunt who lived there died. But used to go quite frequently back in the 80's, but it was always to go fishing.

I've noticed that Steve. I agree with Tall Seas, I find the more laydowns I make in a tourney the better I do. Its hard to lay down a big Ace, but when someone shows strength, no point in gambling unless you have to.

Depends on how you read the guy.

But I dont use to make this kind of calls.

If he knows you're playing only premium hands, then he probably put in that raise figuring if you didn't have an ace you'd fold, or even if you didn't have an ace but were sitting on kings or queens he could catch an ace and still potentially win...if you habitually play tight and raise big only on premium hands anyone paying attention will notice very quickly. Try mixing in some connectors and lower pairs, and play the same hand differently each time....don't let them have a read on you unless its the one that you want them to have on you
