I'd rather go with a pot sized bet to start off, maybe twice the pot if you're trying to push people out. all-in preflop looks like a desperation move to steal the blinds, depending on your position, so he might have thought you had absolutely nothing and figured his pocket pair had a better chance at winning than a 3-7offsuit or whatever he put you on. be realllllllly conscious of your table image too, you could have played other hands loose earlier that could lead him to the same conclusion
