PokerStars Qualifier Duncan McLellan outlasted the field of 379 to claim the title of inaugural United Kingdom Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) Isle of Man Champion and the £94,090 first place prize. It would take only roughly five hours to play out the final table and, in the end, McLellan won a “classic race” against popular Team PokerStars SportStar Fatima Moreira de Melo for all the chips.

Moreira de Melo started the day both as the shortstack and as the main attraction. The former Dutch field hockey player and Woman’s Hockey World Champion was looking to become the first woman to win a UKIPT open event and she almost completed that task by running hot at the final table. Eventually she fell just short, taking runner up but adding £59,660 to her tournament earnings—pushing her total to up over a quarter million lifetime.

As one might expect, the UKIPT Isle of Man final table was largely comprised of players from the UK, including 4 PokerStars Qualifiers. Also in the mix, and at the top of the chip counts for much of the final table, was Chris Jonat, Senior Manager for Team PokerStars Online who, no doubt, took some learned tools to a 4th place finish.

Sandwiched between the two-day November Nine spectacle, the WSOP held the live heads up portion of the final table of the inaugural Online Championship, Tuesday.

Matthew Wilson from North Richmond Hills, Texas, captured the title of Online Nine Champion and the $50,000 first prize, besting Matthew Schultz from Sioux Falls, South Dakota in a live heads-up tournament held at the Penn and Teller theater in the Rio Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas.

To reach the live event, Wilson first won a money-added championship event online at WSOP-com, which then fed into a live SNG.

Schultz (known as “PlanetSchultz” on WSOP-com) and Wilson (screen name “Retiredmilitary”) took to the stage today to battle it out for the crown. The match lasted just about an hour.

It was almost finished even sooner when early on Schultz got all in from behind with only K high, but a king on the river gave him the pot and extended the match.

But his luck didn’t last much longer. Just a few hands later, he got all in with K8 offsuit vs QTs. Things were looking good on an 8-high flop, but a runner-runner straight for Wilson gave him the hand and the match.

This is not Wilson’s first $50k+ cash. In 2006, he came in 112th place in the WSOP Main Event for a tidy sum of $51,129.

In just a few hours, the Penn and Teller theatre will be full once again, for one final heads up match—when Farber and Riess fight for the Main Event bracelet and over $3.5m which separates the 1st and 2nd prize.

Ryan Riess, the 23-year old Las Vegas by way of Michigan poker pro, defeated Jay Farber, the Las Vegas VIP club promoter, last night to win the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event title and $8,361,570 in first place prize money.

It took roughly 3.5 hours and 91 hands of heads up action to determine a winner, and even though Farber started the evening with a 20 million chip advantage over Riess, “The Beast” never truly found himself in any trouble throughout the evening.

Riess, a former poker dealer himself, demonstrated both the luck and the skill that it takes to win a massive tournament like the WSOP Main Event. The broadcast demonstrated that not only did he take away orphaned pots when he knew his opponent was weak, he was also catching an amazing run of cards which helped propel him to victory.

The tournament looked to be coming to a conclusion even earlier on multiple occasions, but thanks to one well executed big time bluff and a timely double up before the first break, Farber was able to extend the match for as long as he did.

Tears swelled in the eyes of Riess as he watched the board run out in what was to be the final hand of the match. As the final card hit the felt, securing him the win, Riess emotionally embraced his family and enthusiastic rail in celebration.

“It feels amazing. First, I want to thank god, without god I wouldn’t be able to be here. I want to thank my family, my friends for the best rail in the entire world and everybody who’s been supporting me. A big hats off to Jay, he played good and he’s a tough competitor.” Riess commented to ESPN’s Kara Scott after his victory.

When asked how he came by his confidence to overcome the odds of becoming champion Riess replied, “I just think I’m the best player in the world.”

Farber, and his adopted stuffed panda icon, is still able to throw a massive Las Vegas party as he walks away with $5,174,357 for his runner-up finish.

Riess, who guaranteed his victory to the ESPN cameras, called his shot and did what he said when he outlasted the rest of the November Nine and bested the field of 6352 runners to secure his place in poker history as the 2013 World Series of Poker Champion.

Germany is proving to be a dominating force in the poker world this year, and not only has poker sensation Philipp Gruissem just taken down his second straight win at the WPT Alpha8 St. Kitts to boost his 2013 earnings to $4,605,401, but fellow countryman Niklas “ragen70” Heinecker’s online cash earnings have just surpassed $4.19 million for the year, making him online poker’s biggest winner of 2013 so far.

Incredibly, the 28-year-old German pro only started grinding on Full Tilt Poker this May, and in August was actually in the red before going on a tear over the past few months. One of the largest pots he won during this period was a massive one in which he held 8-6 on a 9s-7s-5 flop to MalACEsia’s As-Qs. Fortunately for him, no spade fell on the turn and river and so Heinecker ended up scooping the huge $403,000 pot.

In addition to being acknowledged as one of the best 6-max NLHE players in the world, Niklas “ragen70” Heinecker has also been cleaning up at the Triple Draw tables, too, and last Thursday won $573k in just five and a half hours play across eight tables of $2k/$4k 2-7 Triple Draw.

Nevertheless, online cash games is not the only place where Heinecker has been amassing huge scores and on June 5th, the German poker sensation took down the HK$1m GuangDong Asia Millions in Macau for a life-changing HK$34.6m (US$4,456,885) score.

In total, Heinecker’s 2013 winnings across both the online and live arena now comes to more than $8.7 million, making for one of the most extraordinary years ever experienced by any poker player. Currently residing in the UK, Niklas Heinecker had largely got under the poker media’s radar until he took down the Macau tournament this year. However, his skills haven’t gone unnoticed by his fellow competitors and as top Canadian pro Michael McDonald noted: “He’s probably one of the top five poker players in the world.”

World tennis number one Rafael Nadal, a fervent poker player since a knee injury sidelined him from his day job in 2012, will play his first live poker tournament next month, organisers said yesterday.

Nadal will play in a charity tournament in the Czech capital Prague on December 12 – part of the European Poker Tour, to be held from December 8 to 18, said online gaming firm PokerStars, with whom Nadal has an endorsement deal.

“Rafa will play against some of the biggest names on the international professional poker circuit, along with other sporting legends, who will be announced over the coming weeks,” the company said.

So far the Spanish tennis champ has only played in online poker tournaments.

“I have been playing poker online for almost 18 months and now I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing my first live tournament,” Nadal, 27, said in a statement released by PokerStars.

“It’s no secret that I love the competition and that’s what I like about poker,” he said. “It’s a game of skill that requires mental strength and the ability to out-think your opponents and in that way there are similarities to tennis.”


Nadal’s “poker coach”, Alfonso Cardalda, recently told journalists in the Czech Republic his trainee had started out with only a “basic notion” of poker but had made rapid progress thanks to his “competitive spirit”.

The World Series of Poker, owned by Caesars Entertainment Corp., already has an online poker product running in Nevada, and just last week began a trial run for brand new online games in New Jersey, based out of struggling Atlantic City.

The games are only for those physically within the state’s borders.

The firm has announced that it will hold an online championship series in the Garden State starting on Jan. 19. The New Jersey Online Championships will begin with a $250,000 “Invitational Freeroll.” For the WSOP’s promotions page on the series click here.

According to the WSOP’s site, one needs to register for a WSOP account anytime from now until Dec. 9, download the software and log in. Doing so will result in an email on or before Jan. 16 that confirms a player’s eligibility into the freeroll on Jan. 19. Players must also make a minimum $10 deposit in order to be eligible.

After that there will be seven events with real-money buy-ins. A final freeroll will be for those who entered into the previous events. Everything adds up to $1 million.

World Series Of Poker To Hold $250K Freeroll In New Jersey

The WSOP has announced that its European Series and Asia-Pacific Series will now run in alternate years. The World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific (WSOP APAC) will run from October 1 to 14 in 2014, and the WSOP Europe will not run again until 2015—dates to be announced.

WSOP APAC has been shifted to later in the year, which will allow it to be held at the Crown Casino in Melbourne during the Australian Spring rather than in mid-Winter.

WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart said: “There is a glut of poker tournaments around the world, and our vision is to each year put on a single global showcase that can’t be missed.”

The WSOP APAC is growing from a five bracelet event to a ten bracelet event, which brings it closer to equality with WSOP Europe. The strategy allows the WSOP to concentrate resources on fewer but higher profile events to make the most of its prestigious brand.

PokerStars recently announced that it had signed a sponsorship deal to add the main event of the Aussie Millions to its Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT). The next Aussie Millions, which also takes place at the Crown Casino, has been scheduled for January 23 to February 10, 2014—the two signature events in Australian tournament poker will take place at the opposite ends of next year.

The World Poker Tour will wrap up in Montreal on Friday December 6 following the conclusion of the main event, as well as a number of side pots. The WPT main event will conclude today as the final six players compete for the title of WPT Montreal champion.

The player with an overwhelmingly chip lead heading into the final table is Sylvain Siebert. Siebert is Canada’s sole representative at the final table, who maneuvred through an initial pool of 862 players to reach the final table.

Though Siebert is not from Montreal, the Canadian is clearly setting his sights on the WPT title, and is supported by thousands of poker fans in Montreal, as well as across all of Canada.

On Day 4 of the main event, Siebert led the final 18 with approximately 3 million chips stacked in his corner. By the end of the day, Siebert successfully collected over 8.5 million chips, and holds a comfortable lead as he meets his five remaining competitors at the final table.

Poker commentators expect Siebert’s greatest challenge will come from Mukul Pahuja, a US player with nearly $1.5 million in career earnings. Pahuja recently finished third at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open in August, where he netted over $800,000 for achieving that finish. As a result, Pahuja’s experience could provide the greatest challenge to Siebert at the final table.

Poker fans in the Greater Montreal Area should visit the Playground Poker Club later today to watch Siebert and the remaining finalists square off in high-stakes quality poker. Canada has had an unprecedented year of success in international poker tournaments this year, and Canadians are betting on a win at home to wrap up the Year of Canada.

There are just a few weeks left remaining in 2013, and Niklas “ragen70” Heinecker keeps padding his profits in an effort to further distance himself from his colleagues.

The German poker pro is up around $6 million on Full Tilt Poker this year. When you add that to his $4.5 million in live tournament winnings in 2013, he is up a staggering amount.

He is the top performer in all of poker over the past 12 months, if you consider action that was in the public’s eye. Obviously, we don’t know who won big in private live cash games this year. For example, Dan Bilzerian recently Tweeted that he won $10.8 million in a private cash game, but obviously that figure cannot be confirmed — nor disputed.

Heinecker has about double the profits of the second-place Internet earner on the HighstakesDB list. That honor goes to Ben “Bttech86” Tollerene.

The list isn’t too useful anymore though, since many players have opted out of having their results tracked. It’s a shame if you are interested in following the high-stakes action.

At any rate, the good news is that tracking individual pots doesn’t seem to be affected. The largest pot of this month so far was a pretty crazy hand where one player was semi-bluffing all the way with just a gutshot and hit it on the river, and was lucky enough to stack his opponent. The following hand went down at $200-$400 no-limit hold’em, four-handed, on PokerStars.

Unknown “Wilhasha” raised to $1,600 with the 7Diamond Suit 4Diamond Suit, and an account by the name of “26071985” made it $4,500. Wilhasha four-bet to $13,600. His opponent called.

The flop fell 6Heart Suit 3Club Suit 2Heart Suit, and wilhasha bet $13,600. His opponent made the call and the 9Club Suit landed on the turn, further adding to the draw heaviness.

Wilhasha fired $16,800, and his opponent called once again.

The 5Spade Suit landed on the river, giving wilhasha the lucky straight.

He went all in ($52,000 effective) and was called. 26071985 mucked without showing.

Wilhasha raked in the $191,893 pot.

As for a Viktor Blom-Gus Hansen update: Right now, the former is up $1 million on 2013 (he was up $5 million at one point this year), and the latter is in the hole nearly $8.6 million this year. Hansen’s losses have plummeted him to a $15 million lifetime deficit on the software.

Hansen hasn’t played since Sunday, so maybe he’s finally going to take a long break.




Web Poker: Heinecker Up $6 Million As 2013 Winds Down

Rafael Nadal showed he was not tired of dethroning world number one players when he saw off Daniel Negreanu to win a charity poker tournament in Prague on Thursday.

The 100 000-euro ($137 000) tournament was the first-ever live poker event for the 27-year-old Spaniard, who had stripped Serbia's Novak Djokovic of the world's top spot in tennis this year.

Nadal has been a fervent poker player since a knee injury sidelined him from his day job last year, but had so far only played in online poker tournaments.

Besides Negreanu, the world number one poker player, Nadal beat Italian downhill star Alberto Tomba, past football legends Ronaldo and Andriy Shevchenko, and finally Dutch field hockey champion Fatima Moreira de Melo in the heads-up.

"My life is still tennis, playing poker I have fun. I am learning, but at the same time I try to ... be competitive," Nadal told reporters before the tournament.

Like tennis, poker is "a competition, you need to control your emotions, you need to be focused all the time."

"You need to have self-control, you have to wait for your moment," he said.

Nadal made a blistering return to tennis since his career-threatening knee injury, winning 10 titles - including the French and US Opens - and closing out the 2013 season at the top spot of ATP rankings.

German pro Dmitry Holdeew has won the Eureka Poker Tour Prague Main Event, after overcoming a field of 1,315 players over five days on his way to capturing the title, and collecting the €226,400 first place-prize.

The €1,100 main event was held in the Czech Republic and attracted a record-breaking Eureka tournament field to create a prize pool worth €1,275,550. By the time the final table of eight had been reached, Canada’s Ami Barer was the chip leader on a 7.28m stack, followed by UK’s Stephen Chidwick (4.955m) and Dmitri Holdeew (4.72m). Also competing was Jaroslav Peter, Mark Dalimore, Marcin Horecki, Johannes Tiefenbrunner, and Milan Simko.

Dmitri Holdeew (9-9) then proceeded to eliminate Milan Simko (A-10) in 6th (€39,800), before being dealt pocket aces and doing likewise to Mark Dalimore (K-Q) in 5th for €53,500. Eventually, last Czech player Jaroslav Peter busted in 4th for €68,800, and after Ami Barer (8-8) took care of Stephen Chidwick (A-4) in 3rd (€92,500), the heads-up stage of the competition got underway between Dmitry Holdeew and Ami Barer.

As the final battle commenced, Dmitry Holdeew held a 14m to 11.9m chip advantage over Barer, but over the next two hours the players exchanged the lead several times before the defining hand was played with both Holdeew (10-9) and Barer (Kh-4h) all-in on a 10d-3h-7c-9h board. The river subsequently produced a Kd to relegate Ami Barer to a runner-up finish worth €131,400, while Dmitry Holdeew was crowned the 2013 Eureka Prague Main Event champion.

Germany's Dmitry Holdeew Wins Eureka Prague For

It’s not that the World Poker Tour (WPT) is in its death throes, but the popular poker tour is years removed from its high water mark. Attendance is down, TV ratings are down, and buy-ins for WPT tournaments have been lowered, but the WPT might just have an Ace up its sleeve, thanks to Party Poker’s long-term game-plan.

Here is how it might go down.

I have to admit that I’ve been extremely surprised (albeit pleasantly) at the quick resurgence of the US online poker market since New Jersey’s online poker industry went online. There is a certain buzz surrounding the game that has been missing for a number of years in the US, and if the state-by-state conquest continues along its present course it won’t be long before we are in the midst of a second Poker Boom.

Few people realize the breadth of the industry that rose up around the online poker sites during the Poker Boom. From poker media and hosts, to website designers and affiliate marketers, to poker staff in newly reopened or expanded poker rooms; the Poker Boom didn’t just give birth to professional poker players and online poker rooms; it gave birth to literally thousands of jobs in a variety of fields, all of which relied on poker’s continued success.

But the herd was thinned following UIGEA, and continued to be culled right up until this year.

But now poker and the industry that surrounds it are now on an upswing once again. Poker media types are back in demand, new websites are being launched, and everything from affiliate marketers to payment processors are once again turning their attention to the US poker industry.
The fall from prominence of the WPT

One such industry that I haven’t mentioned yet that has a chance to recapture its former glory is the myriad of poker tours out there, and specifically the World Poker Tour.

With US poker back on the upswing, the potential for the World Poker Tour to rise from the ashes and reclaim its former glory as the #1 poker tour, not only in the United States, but around the world is a definite possibility.

As hard hit as the other parts of the poker industry were after the passage of UIGEA in 2006, from online poker, to poker media, to brick & mortar card-rooms, perhaps no single entity fell farther than the World Poker Tour and its brethren like the World Series of Poker Circuit Series.

The WPT was there from the outset of the Poker Boom, and the company managed to ride the poker wave right up to its apex in 2006. But having put virtually every egg in the US poker basket, the WPT was left reeling when poker’s popularity began to wane and online poker morphed from a harmless vice to a quasi-illegal past-time.

With attendance in an absolute freefall and TV viewership faltering the WPT started eliminating stops and reducing its buy-ins for many events (the WSOPC did likewise) and the popular poker tour was met by the perfect storm of adversity:

The WPT lost its ability to send online qualifiers to these big buy-in tournaments
With fewer qualifiers these tournaments were no longer as “juicy” for pros, so attendance suffered on two fronts: Pros and amateurs
With online poker in the US now somewhat illegal online poker sites were spending less money advertising in the market, and less advertising revenue meant less exposure by the networks
Sagging TV ratings and lesser time slots also led to less exposure for the winners, and less exposure meant less chance for a lucrative sponsorship deal, which was just another reason players stopped taking shots in what were high-buy-in tough-field tournaments.

How the WPT can come back

Party Poker and the WPT can now bring back all of those qualifiers, letting the amateurs take on the pros –which in turn attract more pros, which in turns garners more media attention, which in turn attracts more players, and so on and so forth.

So how can they do it? It all hinges on New Jersey, where Party Poker, their subsidiary the World Poker Tour, and their partner in New Jersey the Borgata can now start to bring those causal players back into the mix.
