Golovkin could replace Mayweather as boxing's No.1 star

Gennady GGG Golovkin could be within one or two wins away from taking Floyd Mayweather Jr’s spot as the No.1 fighter in all of boxing. David Lemieux is little more than a prop for Golovkin, a step stone to get him to where he wants to be the pecking order. Golovkin is in a great situation where he’ll take the No.1 spot potentially by default even if the winner of the Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight chooses not to fight him.

If they don’t fight him, the boxing world will see them ducking GGG and then the WBC title will be stripped from the winner of that fight. Whether the title is stripped or the vacate it, Golovkin stands to gain from it.

Mayweather has pretty much ruined his spot as the No.1 fighter in boxing with his last two fights against Andre Berto and Manny Pacquiao. Those fights were so bad that Mayweather has burned his bridges with a lot of boxing fans. Mayweather’s choice of Berto as his opponents gave a lot of boxing fans the perception that Mayweather is afraid to fight the best fighters, so he lost a lot of fans because of that.

If Mayweather does come back, he likely won’t be able to take back his No.1 spot unless he does something really brave like fighting Golovkin or Keith Thurman. Since neither of those things are going to happen, I think Mayweather has cooked his own goose and has lost his top No.1 spot due to bad decisions on his part. It was bad decision not to fight hard and make his fight with Pacquiao exciting last May. It was also Mayweather’s decision to take the easy way by facing Berto instead of Amir Khan, Thurman, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, Tim Bradley or Golovkin.

Golovkin will win a massive amount of fans this Saturday night if he obliterates IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux in their fight on HBO PPV from Madison Square Garden in New York. The table is set for Golovkin to increase his star power tenfold by him fighting in an impressive manner by making quick work of Lemieux. All he needs to do is go out and destroy Lemieux, and he’ll be either on the verge of taking the top No.1 spot or he’ll have it all to himself.

Golovkin’s recent wins over Willie Monroe Jr, Daniel Geale, Martin Murray and Matthew Macklin has impressed a lot of people. Those are all good fighters, and yet Golovkin made easy work of each of them.

The only people standing in Golovkin’s way from taking Mayweather’s spot for the No.1 position is Lemieux, Canelo and Cotto. Like I said earlier, Golovkin can still get the No.1 spot even if he doesn’t face the Cotto-Canelo winner. If they duck him, then Golovkin takes the top spot by default. It’s imperative that the Cotto vs. Canelo winner immediately face Golovkin if they don’t want to lose status with the fans, and if they want to have a chance to take the No.1 spot. The winner of that fight won’t be able to take the No.1 spot by swerving Golovkin and assuming that the casual boxing fans won’t hear about it.
