On May 26th, 1928 the World Cup was born.

The first world cup was the only event to not involve the modern qualifying rounds. The only European teams involved were France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, and Romania. Other European teams either wished to remain in purely Amateur events, or argued that the expected trip time was far too long. Other than Uruguay six additional south American teams participated, including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Peru.

Two teams remained to complete the final 13 for 1930, Mexico and the United States. The U.S. was utilizing a heavily Scottish roster for the event.

In the end it was Uruguay battling Argentina for the cup. Victory and the first world cup went to Uruguay as they beat the Argentineans 4 to 2.

Press freedom is becoming a matter of concern in South Africa ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with various media organisations, including the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef), expressing concerns and condemning attacks on press freedom.

Recent attacks on press freedom were reported by the Business Day newspaper on 9 April 2010 in which a BBC journalist, Jonah Fisher, was kicked out of a press conference by the African National Congress Youth Leag ue (ANCYL) president Julius Malema on 8 April 2010. 😔

Malema called Fisher a 'bastard', an 'agent' and telling him to take his 'white tendencies elsewhere' after Fisher pointed out that Malema lived in Sandton yet he criticised Zimbabwe's opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), for having offices there.

South African Standard Time is two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+2). During June and July, when the 2010 tournament will be held, South African time is the same as that in continental Europe, and an hour ahead of the UK. So matches that kick off at 9pm here should be comfortable viewing for Europeans, but will be in the middle of the day in the US and early in the morning in Australia.

Football fans. Be prepared for all round actions. South Africa, the host of FIFA World Cup 2010 marked the 50-day countdown to the tournament on 21st April,2010. The chief local organizer Danny Jordan termed the occasion as defining moment. The announcement was made in Kimberley. He was accompanied by the President Jacob Juma. Jordan remarked that South Africa gaining the right to host the Cup is one of the significant moments that will shape the country.Jordan said that South Africa is fully capable of hosting the tournament. He also added that the hosts will defy the skeptics who think that country will be unable to successfully host the tournament due to its high violent crime rate and erratic transport.

Jordan informed that all the needed infrastructure was in place and all 10 World Cup Stadiums are ready. He also said that tickets are selling like hot cakes rubbishing fears of empty stands. Celebrations have begun at the Galshewe Stadium for the tournament.
The inaugural match will be played by the hosts against Mexico on June 11, 2010 at Soweto Score City Stadium. South African President Zuma was also confident of the country staging the football’s biggest event.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter is hoping that former South African president Nelson Mandela will be healthy enough to open the World Cup in South Africa.

“We cross fingers that Nelson Mandela … can realise this dream. And his dream would be to be at the opening of the World Cup. For the time being, he is doing well and we hope that he can do it,”

With the World Cup quickly approaching, it comes as no surprise that the premiere brand in soccer games has a new title on retail shelves. EA Sports latest one, 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa may not be a completely new experience, but it does sport some new enhancements over FIFA 10. The question is, will it satisfy Footy fans and their rabid anticipation for anything World Cup-related or should it stay off the pitch until FIFA 11.
