Both the Kentucky Derby favorite and the horse likely to sit second on the morning line already have destinations for their next careers at stud.

Kentucky Derby hats are brighter, larger and more extravagant than they’ve ever been before. So go ahead and throw a fabulous Derby party, sip mint juleps with your friends or head to one of the many Derby charity events this season. Not sure where to get that showstopping outfit? We’ve got you covered! :acne

Five years after becoming a full-time trainer, Donnie Von Hemel had his first Kentucky Derby starter with Clever Trevor in 1989. It has taken 27 years for Von Hemel to make it back to the Derby, but he’s not complaining.

“I knew how hard it was to get here, and I thought I was very fortunate to be here at the time,” Von Hemel said. “Since then we’ve had a lot of nice horses, but it really has never worked out. I don’t really want to come just to be here. If you’re No. 20 on the points list, I’m not thinking I need to be here.”

Von Hemel appears to have a live long shot for this year’s Derby in Suddenbreakingnews, the gelded son of Mineshaft and the runner-up to Creator in the Arkansas Derby.

Ridden by Luis Quinonez, Suddenbreakingnews is a closer who likely will need some racing luck in what figures to be a full field of 20 horses for the Kentucky Derby.

“There are 10 million variables in the race, so I can’t predict what’s going to happen,” Von Hemel said. “We hope we have a good pace to run at and a clean trip when we do get to run. But those are probably two pretty big hopes. …

“This horse is the right kind of horse, I think.”

Von Hemel, 54, comes from a family of trainers. His father, Don Sr., is in the Nebraska Racing Hall of Fame. His brother, Kelly, also is active.

Donnie Von Hemel first found national prominence in 1989 with Clever Trevor, who became the first Oklahoma-bred to run in the Derby. He finished 13th – Sunday Silence won by 2 ½ lengths over Easy Goer – but went on to win the Grade 1 Arlington Classic and earn more than $1.3 million for his career.

“Although our horse didn’t run his best race (in the Kentucky Derby), he went on and proved he was one of the three or four best 3-year-olds of that season,” Von Hemel said.

With more than 2,000 career victories, Von Hemel has enjoyed plenty of success since that first trip to the Derby, most notably capturing the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile with Caleb’s Posse in 2011.

As for what’s changed the most since that 1989 trip to the Derby, Von Hemel said social media has made his job tougher, as horse owners have instant access to information.

“A lot of times I don’t even know something before the owner does, and he’s calling me,” Von Hemel said. “You better be on top of everything all the time because they have the ability to get any kind of information. If they call and you don’t know what’s going on, they’re probably not going to look at you as favorably.”

The reality is that it would be nice with an outsider! (There is the money to collect).
