If you're looking at your favorite NHL team's schedule for this season and wondering when they're playing the Atlanta Thrashers you can stop – the Thrashers died in the offseason, getting reborn up north as the Winnipeg Jets.
Of course, the Jets existed before, playing mostly middling hockey for many seasons before they were moved south to become the Phoenix Coyotes. That caused much heartache for Manitoba hockey fans, but now their team is back in business.
And that business begins on Sunday, as the Jets start their 2011-12 NHL betting campaign at home against the Montreal Canadiens. Can a raucous Winnipeg crowd will its new team to wins this season?
That remains to be seen – after all, this squad is still just the Atlanta Thrashers dressed up in some new uniforms, and the Thrashers ended up 13 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference last season with a record of 34-36-12.
All of the key Thrashers players did make the move north for this season, including leading scorer Andrew Ladd (29 goals, 59 points in 2010-11) and blueliners Dustin Byfuglien (53 points) and Tobias Enstrom (51 points).
As well, the team is looking for a breakout campaign from goaltender Ondrej Pavelec after he went 21-23-9 with a .910 save percentage last season.
The Canadiens got a breakout campaign from their netminder last year, as Carey Price put up 38 wins to go along with a 2.35 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. Price remains the most valuable player on the Habs' roster.
Montreal added scoring forward Erik Cole to the lineup over the summer, but they'll have to make due without top defenseman Andrei Markov at least in the short term – he's not yet ready to return from last year's knee surgery.
Puck drop for Sunday's contest is set for 5 p.m. ET from Winnipeg.

Think you know where this trend will end? Bet on the NHL with Bodog.
The bigger loss for the Sabres will be that of resident iron man Brad Boyes, who had played in 513 consecutive games, becoming just the 20th NHL player in history to reach that mark when he did so last month. Boyes suffered a lower-body injury during the second period, possibly to his ankle.
On the plus side, rookie defenseman T.J. Brennan made his NHL debut, and even scored a goal in the game, becoming the first Sabre defenseman to score in his premiere game since now-head coach Lindy Ruff did so in 1979.
The Sabres now have a chance to get back on the right track when they face the last-place Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night. It will be their second and last meeting of the season. Buffalo handled Columbus quite easily in a 4-2 victory on Oct. 27.
Look for Sabres forward Thomas Vanek to continue having a career year. His 12 goals and 25 points put him in the top five in the league in both categories. Likewise, expect Buffalo’s special teams units to run amok over Columbus. They have the seventh-best power play and fourth-best penalty kill squads in the NHL.
