Just the other day I was visiting a friend in Buffalo, NY…She lives in the quiet suburbs right outside of the city where there is usually not too much to do… However when we were driving down one of the streets we saw a huge crowd of people and a bunch of kinds playing roller hockey. I thought that usually people don’t block off a road and crowd around a bunch of children for no reason...there has to be something more going on. So we parked the car and made our way over to check the scene out. As it turns out 3 of the Buffalo Sabres; Andrew Peters, Derek Roy and Patrick Kaleta were playing hockey right in the street with the rest of the kids. I asked around and was told that they were helping fundraise for a nearby camp! Later on of course I got to meet the Sabres; who all seemed to be pretty cool guys and told them how great I thought it was for them to give up a night and spend it with children to help fundraise money! It makes me happy to know that athletes with money still make efforts to volunteer and spend time in their community. Just thought you should know!

For those who say there is no heat on ice, now is the right time to prove them wrong.

Currently, the National Hockey League (NHL) is among the major professional sports leagues in the United States, the others being the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), and the Major League Baseball (ML😎.

In the year 1917, NHL was founded in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The first establishing teams were the Canadiens, the Senators, the Bulldogs, and the Wanderers. The league first started with four teams which later expanded to 30 (24 franchisees from the United States and 6 from Canada).

Although hockey is extremely popular, the NHL has a small fan base. Sponsors pay limited notice of the league that television was not really that much of an income for it either. Usually, the league's audience is composed mostly by people who are educated and affluent since few can afford to buy the expensive game tickets.

In terms of teams and players, among the four famous professional leagues in the United States, the NHL has the most Canadian teams in it. While the other three only has one Canadian team based in Toronto each, the NHL has about six in the league. The league also takes pride in being the only league to have teams based in the capital cities of two countries, namely, Washington D.C. and Ottawa.

As for its games, the NHL teams are currently divided into two conferences that are regularly rotated every year, namely, the Eastern and Western Conferences. Every conference has three different divisions. For the Eastern Conference, there is the Atlantic, the Northeast, and the Southeast divisions. The Central, Northwest, and Pacific Divisions, on the other hand, make up the Western Conference.

During regular seasons, each NHL team plays 82 games. Thirty two games of the said 82 are played within the team’s division, while 40 other games are competed in the non-divisional intra-conference. The remaining 10 games are participated in the inter-conference. But even with so many games at hand, the league's season ticket prices still remain high, traditionally higher than the other three major leagues.

Despite having a limited fan base compared to other major leagues, the NHL is still able to maintain its existence and popularity in the sports scene with its players’ reputations. Some of the NHL’s notable players are Sidney Crosby, Dany Heatley, Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Lois, and Joe Thorton. The five players are the highest point-scoring forwards in the league's 2006-2007 season.

The NHL's walk towards its position now was not that easy. It may have gained a lot of teams, but it also lost some on its way towards where it is now. But even so, the truth remains that the NHL boosted the reputation of ice sports in the U.S. and Canada while instigating more interest for hockey.

Out of curiousity, how popular it it to wager on the NHL? It seems to pale in comparison to other sports

I think it happens with Pro Line, but I agree it's probably not as popular to bet on the NHL as other sports.

A friend of mine suggests that there would be no NFL without betting. :dirol
But then again, he's a proud holder of Toronto Argonaut season tickets, so he's biased to the CFL.

I agree kids need some positive pro athlete role models, especially with some of the problems in other sports involving steroids or illegal activities like dogfights, to name just one.

The NHL has reached the final stage of their playoffs for this season. Only two teams remain, and both were near the top of the league standings for most of the year. The Detroit Red Wings are the gambling favorites, but the Pittsburgh Penguins are not to be counted out.

Sports books have made Detroit a slight favorite, but not enough that the Penguins should have no chance to win.

Ottawa returns home after a 2-1-1 road trip. The Senators failed to win their third straight Saturday, falling 3-2 in a shootout to Tampa Bay. Dany Heatley has a goal in each of his last three games and leads the Senators with 13 points. He has seven goals and 20 assists in 24 games against the Capitals.

There are still plenty of games to watch before the season is over.The Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks are already underway. Dan Cleary matched a playoff career high with two goals on Sunday leading the Red Wings to a 5-2 win over the Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

Game 2 is Tuesday night in Detroit. Then the series moves to Chicago for Game 3 on Friday night and Game 4 on Sunday afternoon.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins fire up their series tonight in Pittsburgh.

Game 2 will be played on Thursday before the series switches to Carolina for Games 3 and 4. These games will be played on Saturday, and Tuesday of next week.

A federal judge has sentenced a Silicon Valley financier to more than 8 years in prison for bilking banks and investors out of millions of dollars in an attempt to buy a pro hockey team and finance a lavish lifestyle.

William "Boots" Del Biaggio III was sentenced Tuesday in San Francisco. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to a felony charge of forging financial documents to obtain $110 million in loans from several banks and two NHL owners.

The judge also ordered him to pay more than $67.4 million in restitution. His interest in the hockey team will be sold and the proceeds distributed to his victims.

It is easy to forget that hockey season is ready to go. With preseason games starting tonight, the NHL will be back in full swing before you know it.

The first game of the preseason will feature the Florida Panthers against the Vancouver Canucks, with seven more games going tomorrow night.

There has already been one major deal to speak of.

The Ottawa Senators on Saturday traded Dany Heatley to San Jose for forwards Jonathan Cheechoo and Milan Michalek, a deal that also involves an exchange of draft picks.

The Senators play in San Jose on Dec. 1 but the Sharks won’t visit Ottawa until next season - unless the two teams meet in the Stanley Cup final in June.

The start of the regular season is on Oct. 1. The Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues will open in Sweden, while the Florida Panthers and Chicago Blackhawks start in Finland.

Fred Cusick had that sort of role, as voice of the Boston Bruins. He had served the Bruins for four decades both in the radio and television. He recently died at the age of 90 on September 15. According to his son, Ted, Fred died in his Barnstable Massachussetts home after battling with cancer. He was to be inducted in the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame the following day..........

Colorado Avalanche’s captain Joe Sakic announced his retirement last July of this year, making Adam Foote the newly named captain of the team. The retirement was finalized on July, and the future games of the Avalanche will obviously be bereft of Number 19, “Super Joe”..................
