Athletic has obviously focused entirely on the CL-placement and was used as the then managed, it did not go so well in the championship. The Basques could only beat Levante at home, while they have lost in Malaga and Barcelona. In both games they could have achieved a positive result by a little more luck, but they could not score a goal. This was followed by two more disappointments in their own stadium. First they have in the context of the Champions League against Shakhtar 0: 0 plays and last weekend they have against Granada 0: 1. So you have three games stored in a row without a goal scored, which is a really poor performance for Athletic. Malaga lost their following game 3-0 away to Valencia, but have managed to remain unbeaten in their next two league matches in which they picked up a 0-0 draw at home against Levante and then 2-2 draw away to Espanyol, but whether or not those results have installed enough confidence into the players is another matter and it does seem like it is going to take a miracle for them get anything from this game against the mighty Barcelona.

Out of the squad, new keeper Marc-André ter Stegen, Douglas, Sandro, Pedro, Marc Bartra, Martín Montoya and Gerard Piqué arguably have the most to gain from added minutes. Whether Lucho thinks it is necessary to instill that in his players at this point in the season is up to him. But it’s something that needs to be addressed before injuries start to make Lucho’s choices for him. Piqué’s lack of confidence against Athletic Bilbao was smellier than a rotting gazelle on the Serengeti, and any poacher of a forward worth his mettle will put as much pressure as possible on the out-of-form defender.
