While other states are considering legislation to legalize different forms of casino gambling, the state of Delaware is about to set the bar even higher. Legislators in the state are strongly considering legalizing sports betting.


The new governor of the state, Jack Markell, is unsure where he stands on the issue. He claims that he needs to know more of the details before making an informed decision on whether he will support the legislation.

The Breeders' Cup announced yesterday that B. Wayne Hughes, a prominent Thoroughbred owner and the founder and chairman of Public Storage, has resigned from the Breeders' Cup board of directors to concentrate on other business interests. Hughes had been part of the Breeders’ Cup board of directors since 2006.

"Since I began serving on the Breeders' Cup Board in 2006, we have undergone a series of changes and innovations, and I am proud to have played a role in helping chart a new course for the organization," said Hughes.

"We will miss Wayne's passion for our industry, his business acumen and candor, and we are very grateful for his service to the Breeders' Cup," said Breeders' Cup chairman William S. Farish Jr.

The Breeders' Cup Board will choose a replacement for Hughes from the Breeders' Cup members and trustees on January 20 to serve the remainder of the term. Hughes' term expires in June.

The State of Nevada Gaming Control Board released figures showing bettors wagered $81,514,748 on Sunday's game between the Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. That was a drop from the $92,055,833 bet on last year's game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots.

(The greatest amount of money bet in the last 10 years was the $94,534,372 wagered in 2006 on the game between the Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks).

UFC 96 turned out to be one of the most entertaining, knockout filled, nights of MMA fighting we’ve seen in a while. The only televised fight to go the distance was the main event between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine. The two strikers spent most of the fight throwing punches and kicks at each other, with Jackson getting the edge after knocking Jardine down in the second and third round. Jackson won a unanimous decision and gets a title shot at “Sugar” Rashad Evens later in the summer.

In the other fights Kendal Grove and Brandon Vera both looked impressive against weaker opponents, while Matt Hamill had the knockout of the night with a vicious kick to the head on Mark Munoz. Also, undefeated heavyweight Shane Carwin made quick work of Gabriel Gonzaga, knocking him out with a short right hand in the first round.

New Delaware Governor Jack Markell next week will introduce a proposal to legalize sports gambling in the state. Delaware is facing a $700 million budget shortfall.

Markell's proposal, should it pass the state legislature, would institute a statewide sports lottery that would include only parlay bets. A gambler has to make at least two correct picks in order to cash a ticket on a parlay.
