The 38-year old Vitali Klitschko was able to defend his WBC heavyweight championship for the third time this year. He faced the then unbeaten Georgia-based, New Jersey-born Kevin Johnson on the ring. Johnson has a record of 22-0-1 and has 9 knockouts. He earned his title fight by beating Devin Vargas back in May. Meanwhile, Klitschko has a record of 38-2 and has 37 knockouts...................

I think it would be a lot of fun if we did an NBA point spread contest on these forums of some kind. It's always fun trying to pick the winner and if the team is going to cover the point spread... and why just the NBA, could be any sport!

Gaines Adams, a defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears, died Sunday, Jan. 17, in South Carolina. He was only 26-years-old.

Gaines Adams, who was an all-American at Clemson, died of cardiac arrest. He had gone into cardiac arrest at his family's home in Greenwood, said Marcia Kelley-Clark, chief deputy coroner for Greenwood County. Apparently, Adams had an enlarged heart which caused the cardiac arrest.

“We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines’ passing,” the Bears said in a statement. “Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

After being acquired in October in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Adams played in 10 games as a reserve for the Bears.

Recent legislation has made it even more clear that gamblers themselves cannot be prosecuted for placing bets over the Internet. Online gambling sites cannot accept bets in the US and therefore must be located in jurisdictions such as Great Britain, Canada and "The Switzerland of Central America" - Costa Rica in order to accept your bet online.

In theory, the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, which begins Wednesday outside of Tucson, Ariz., is supposed to be the best pre-Masters event of the PGA Tour’s early season as it aims to bring the world’s top 64 players in the unique match-play, bracket-style competition.

Ah, but this year there’s certainly a buzz missing as both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are not playing. Last year, Woods returned to competitive golf at this event after missing the last half of 2008 following knee surgery. There were rumors that Tiger would debut here again this year, but he remains out of the public eye as he tries to save his marriage amidst all the off-the-course frenzy surrounding Tiger’s life.

Mickelson is skipping this event to take a family vacation that had been postponed due to his wife’s cancer treatment. The Mickelsons’ three children are on holiday from school this week, so Lefty wanted to spend the week with his family.

So who does that leave as the favorite at Dove Mountain? On Bodog’s golf odds, the trio of Steve Stricker (who is up to No. 2 in the world and the No. 1 overall seed this week), Geoff Ogilvy and Rory McIlroy have opened as the co-favorites.

Ogilvy is the defending champion here and is 17-2 all-time in matches at this event — he also won it in 2006 and lost in the finals in 2007. Stricker won the Match Play in 2001, while McIlroy has finished in the Top 10 in each of his first two starts on the European Tour this year. This was McIlroy’s first U.S. tournament as a pro last year, and he won his first three matches before losing to Ogilvy.

There have been six winners on the PGA Tour this year but two of them, Ryan Palmer and Bill Haas, didn't make the Top 64 (actually Top 66 since both Tiger and Mickelson aren’t playing) and aren’t in the field. There are 23 players under the age of 30 — three more than the previous record in 2009. There are 18 countries represented, with 21 Americans. The field also features Italy's Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, the first brothers to contest a WGC event. The No. 1 seeds other than Stricker are Lee Westwood, Jim Furyk and Martin Kaymer. Click here for a link to the Match Play bracket.

Unlike most PGA Tour events, this starts on Wednesday, when the field is cut down to 32, with the winners then playing on Thursday. Last year and in 2008, 13 higher seeds lost in the first round. Friday the field is cut down to 16 players, with the quarterfinals played Saturday morning and the semifinals played on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday the finals will be played with a consolation match to determine 3rd and 4th place.

After a blow-out in Turin four years ago, Team USA's Lindsey Jacboellis was ready to see some gold in Vancouver. However, it was not meant to be for the Stratton, Vt. snowboarder. Jacobellis was automatcially disqualified when she came off the first jump, landed off balance and nicked the gate.

"It's definitely not the end of the world for me," Jacobellis told the media. "It's unfortunate that the rest of the world only sees this race and the one four years ago.

"I guess I don't have a great track record with the general public."

Jacobellis said she that after she went off line into the first bank turn, her run was more or less over.

"My board just finally caught up, threw me in the direction of the panels. I was like, 'Well, nothing you can do about it now.' Sometimes you can't control the things you want to. Sometimes I'm dominant, sometimes I fall into funks when things like that happen."

Maelle Ricker of Canada earned gold, making her the first Canadian woman to earn a gold medal when the Olympics have been held on its home soil. Get your Olympic Odds in the Bodog Sportsbook!

There’s no question that the Daytona 500 is the Super Bowl of NASCAR, but it’s also not really representative of the full Sprint Cup schedule, as any driver will tell you. Daytona is a superspeedway where cars are limited in speed with restrictor plates and are usually bunched together. That won’t be the case at the two-mile Fontana (Calif.) oval Sunday for the Auto Club 500 – bet on it on Bodog’s NASCAR odds. Fontana’s Auto Club Speedway is wide and mostly flat, which is the sort of track that the majority of Sprint Cup series races are run on.

Four-time points champion Jimmie Johnson had a rough go of it at Daytona, finishing 35th while dealing with mechanical issues. But he has the highest driver rating of anyone at Fontana and has an average finish of 4.8 here. However, he usually fares much better in the fall race – having won that the past three years. He hasn’t won the early California race since his rookie year of 2002. But he is among the Bodog favorites this week.

Greg Biffle also is among the favorites. He won at Fontana in 2005 and was fourth in this race last year. Overall he has that one win and four top-five finishes in 14 starts. What about Dale Earnhardt Jr.? Still the most popular driver on the circuit, Junior has been in a massive slump for a few years. But he jumped from 10th in the final few laps last week at Daytona to finish second behind Jamie McMurray. However, Junior’s average driver rating at this track is just 20th and he has an average finish of around 24th. He finished 39th and 25th in the two races last year.

Jeff Gordon has won at Fontana three times in his career and has the fifth-best driver rating. He was second in both races last year at Auto Club Speedway. McMurray goes for a rare win the week after Daytona much like Matt Kenseth last year. But McMurray hasn’t finished higher than 16th at this track since 2006. Maybe Fontana will be a good tonic for Kenseth, who hasn’t won since reaching Victory Lane last February at the track.
