Phil Mickelson donned his third green jacket Sunday at Augusta after firing a 5-under 67 to take the Masters by three strokes over Lee Westwood.
Lefty finished at 16-under and was met after the round with a big hug from his wife, Amy Mickelson, who has been waging a much-publicized fight with breast cancer.
“To win this tournament, it’s the most amazing feeling,” Mickelson told Jim Nantz in the Butler Cabin. “It’s been an emotional year and I’m very proud of my wife and the fight and struggle she’s been through.”
This was no runaway victory for Mickelson, who went into the tournament with 10/1 odds to win the Masters. His best moment of the day probably came on the par-5 13th hole, where he stuck his second shot right next to the pin after hitting off the pine straw and around a tree.
Westwood was a gallant adversary, as was third-place finisher Anthony Kim, who shot a scintillating 65 to rocket up the Masters scoreboard, only to fall four shots short.
A frustratingly inconsistent day was the story for Tiger Woods, who started the final round with three bogeys in the first five holes to finish in a tie for fourth, five shots back of the lead.
Woods made a great comeback after the rough start, impressively holing out for eagle on the par-4 seventh hole and adding another eagle on No. 15, but five bogeys on the day cost him in the end.
