You can read an overall preview of this week’s PGA Tour stop, The Players Championship, in another post, but let’s focus this one just on how Tiger Woods fares this week at TPC Sawgrass. Bodog’s golf odds has a few Tiger-specific props you can wager on (as well as other players).
First off, it’s notable that Woods is not the overall favorite to win this week – he is at 8/1, just behind Phil Mickelson’s 7/1. But as usual Woods is the story this week because he is coming off his worst round ever in the U.S., a second-round 79 at the Quail Hollow Championship. Of course Woods missed the cut in Charlotte, only his sixth missed cut ever as a pro.
But because of that missed cut, be very wary of betting against Tiger this week. It seems an MC truly gets Tiger’s focus even sharper because in his previous four appearances following a missed cut, dating back to 2005, Woods has finished third or better each time. His last missed cut was the 2009 British Open, and Tiger then won the next two times he played after that (Buick Open and WGC-Bridgestone in consecutive weeks). Tiger was even more impressive following his previous missed cut to last year’s British, that coming at the 2006 U.S. Open. OK, Woods didn’t then win his next event as he finished tied for second at the Western Open. But then Tiger won his next eight tournaments (one unofficial event) on the PGA Tour, which extended into his first start of 2007. We will never see a streak like that again.
Bodog lists Tiger as -650 to make the cut at The Players Championship and +400 to miss it. Woods has ever missed consecutive cuts but hasn’t been great at this tournament. Since winning The Players in 2001, Tiger has finished in the Top 10 just once at Sawgrass – an eighth-place finish in 2009. Bodog lists Woods as -130 to finish in the Top 10 this week and Even to finish outside it.
