It's been leaked that Canadian natives Nelly Furtado and Sarah McLachlan will perform at Friday's Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Vancouver.

A luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia was killed after a horrific crash on the year-old sledding track Friday, Olympic officials confirmed.

On a morning training run, Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled at nearly 80 mph and was catapulted over the lip of the track and slammed into an unpadded metal pole.

We can now say that the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic games are officially underway and things appear to be going quite well, for Team United States. And part of that, is thanks to short-track speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno. :dirol

Hard to believe that a country like Canada, a country that for the most part spends a good five months of the year covered in a blanket of snow, has not won an Olympic gold medal on home soil. They didn't do it in Montreal or Calgary, but they did it tonight at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Men's moguls skiier Alexandre Bilodeau becomes the first Canadian to win an Olympic gold medal on Canadian soil…and in fine fashion, too. :thumbsup

There was a shock on Day 5 at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics when Germany powered to the top of the medal table, with the 4 medals it won yesterday. The US had dominated the tables since the start of the games. :dirol

Team USA's Ryan Miller was absolutely brilliant, making an amazing 42 saves during the men's ice hockey game on Sunday. Sadly for team Canada, it was an upset of one goaltender outplaying the other goaltender.

Team USA scored again to enjoy a 5-3 win. :thumbsup

Every tournament needs an underdog. Looks like we've got one now in Slovakia, who played with balls late Wednesday night in their Olympic hockey matchup against Sweden to send the defending Olympic champions packing after beating them 4-3.

Finland beat the Czech Republic 2-0 Wednesday night in their quarterfinal meeting and will now play the United States in the semifinals on Friday. If you're looking for stats on these two teams, they have played each other in the past two Olympics, with Finland winning their last game at the 2006 Torino Games.

With only a few days left in the 2010 Winter Olympics, let’s check out the gold and overall medal counts in Vancouver.

The United States has been on top of the overall medal count for the Winter Olympics for almost the entire time, and Team USA has a stranglehold on the top spot once again heading into Friday’s action. America leads the overall medal count with 32 (8 gold, 12 silver, 11 bronze), while pre-Olympics favorite Germany sits in 2nd place with 26 (8 gold, 11 silver, 7 bronze). The Germans were the 1/1 favorite at BoDog Sportsbook to take home both the gold medal count AND the overall medal count during the Winter Games.

Check out the betting odds on the teams most likely to add to their overall medal counts in the Winter Olympics at BoDog Sportsbook.

After the thrills of the men’s ice hockey final between the USA and Canada, the last event of this Winter Olympic Games in which the host nation Canada triumphed, came the excitement of the Closing Ceremony with the cheers of Canadians still ringing out. The opening of the ceremony began with highlights of the last 17 days sporting action reminding us just how great it had been.

Germany was next on the podium with 30 (10 gold, 13 silver, seven bronze). The host nation enjoyed a ton of success with 26 medals and a third-place finish (14 gold, seven silver, five bronze). Norway (nine gold, eight silver, six bronze) finished fourth, while Austria rounded out the top five (four gold, six silver, six bronze)
